From the Experts: Gwen Monneraye

On the back of the eagerly anticipated stallion fee announcements in Europe, Emma Berry spoke with a number of leading industry figures about value. Today we hear from Gwen Monneraye of La Motteraye Consignment.

EB: Who have you identified as a first-year stallion at an appealing opening fee?

GM: I really like Persian King (Ire). I know that at €30,000 he is not a bargain price, but he’s a Classic winner from a good family and [his sire] Kingman (GB) is so hot, so we decided to buy a share in him. During the Arc, it wasn’t really his type of race but he proved that he was tough and could stay beyond a mile. We are lucky to have some really good new stallions arriving in France. With Golden Horde (Ire) going to Montfort et Préaux, Wooded (Ire) at Haras de Bouquetot and Hello Youmzain (Fr) at Haras d’Etreham, we have three fast horses retiring to stud this year and I think that could suit our broodmare band by bringing a bit of speed, which we lack sometimes in France.

EB: Best value proven stallion, and why?

GM: I really like Sea The Moon (Ger). He has gone up to £22,500 but his statistics are amazing and I think the best is yet to come with this sire. I also think Mehmas (Ire) is good value, or he could prove to be good value in a few years’ time. For what he has achieved in his first year, I think €25,000 could be a no-brainer.

EB: Who would you consider to be an under the radar stallion?

GM: I think this happens maybe more in England than in France but the older stallions somehow get left aside. That has happened a little for Oasis Dream (GB), who is now £20,000. We used him last year for a maiden mare. I always like to send our young mares to a proven stallion and I don’t think you can go wrong at that price. He is also having some really good results as a broodmare sire now.

G1SW Golden Horde Sore, Will Skip Champions Day

Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}) is out of contention for the Oct. 17 G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. after sustaining a setback, the Racing Post reported on Sunday. The AlMohamediya Racing colourbearer won the G1 Commonwealth Cup S. at Royal Ascot earlier this season, before running third in the July 11 G1 Darley July Cup S. and fifth in the Aug. 9 G1 LARC Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville. The 3-year-old colt reported home third in the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup S. at Haydock when last seen on Sept. 5.

“He’s not going to be confirmed tomorrow for the race, I’m sorry to say,” trainer Clive Cox told Racing Post. “He was found to be sore after his work on Wednesday and we’re just not happy with him. We’ll monitor the situation, but we’re not going to be able to sigh off the season as intended by running at Ascot. he’s been tremendously consistent and winning the Commonwealth Cup first time up this season was amazing.”

July Cup in the Cards for Threat

MGSW Threat (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) will take his chance in the G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket rather than head to France this weekend. Trainer Richard Hannon had earmarked Sunday’s seven-furlong G1 Prix Jean Prat for last year’s G2 Gimcrack S. winner–but he has had a change of heart. Threat finished fifth to Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) over a mile in the G1 St James’s Palace S. on his only outing to date this season.

Hannon told his website www.richardhannonracing.co.uk: “As long as there are no last-minute glitches, the plan is for Threat to take his chance in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday. We were originally looking at the Prix Jean Prat in France. But the ground there is very soft at the moment, and I don’t really want to run him on that surface in what looks a hot little race.

“That’s not to say the July Cup is any easier, but I just think the drop back to six furlongs might be just what he needs, and he hasn’t got much to find with Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire})–and he’ll be favourite–so it makes sense to have a crack at this prize. He’s come out of Ascot in great shape, and might even come on for it a little bit as well. Oisin Murphy maintains the ride.”

Lethal Force’s Golden Horde Powers to Commonwealth Cup Triumph

Strong and direct, AlMohamediya Racing’s Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}) was the main player on Royal Ascot Friday as he provided trainer Clive Cox and jockey Adam Kirby with yet another major sprint when making virtually all in the G1 Commonwealth Cup. Always at the head of the stand’s-side group and in front overall before two out, the 5-1 shot kept digging in to beat Kimari (Munnings) by 1 1/2 lengths, with Ventura Rebel (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}) 2 1/2 lengths back in third.
