Friday’s Stronach 5 Wager Features $76,823 Carryover

The weekend will begin with a bang Friday with a rare carryover in the Stronach 5 of $76,823.80.

The popular wager will feature a low 12-percent takeout and races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields.

The Stronach 5 begins with Laurel Park's very competitive eighth race, a maiden special weight event for 2-year-olds at seven furlongs.

Figlio Del Re, a son of Galileo trained by Graham Motion, draws the rail, and makes his second career start after finishing a well-beaten eighth at Belmont Park Sept. 18 on the turf. The winner of the Sept. 18 race, Slipstream, came back to win the Futurity (G3) Oct. 10 at Belmont while the second-place Futurity finisher, Run Curtis Run, had won the Rick Violette Stakes earlier in the summer at Saratoga.

Trainer Michael Trombetta will saddle two in the Laurel eighth. Caminero, a son of Lord Nelson, will be making his debut while Souper Royal Moon comes off a seventh-place finish in his debut. Trainer Jose Corrales will saddle Backnthewoods coming off a fourth-place finish against similar company Sept. 17 at Belmont.

Santa Anita's third race, a $50,000 maiden claiming event for California-bred or sired horses 3-year-olds and up going six furlongs, is wide-open. What an Idea, a son of Shackleford, makes his debut for trainer Peter Miller and jockey Flavien Prat. Devil Be Me returns after a seventh-place finish in his debut Sept. 24 at Los Alamitos and Straus's Place makes his second start after finishing fifth, beaten only 2 ¾ lengths, Sept. 12 at Las Alamitos.

The Stronach 5 heads to Gulfstream for its ninth race, a claiming event at 1 1/16 miles on the Tapeta. It's been two years and 23 starts since Gran Malbec has visited the winner's circle, but the tough 6-year-old enters this race after finishing second by a neck last time out on this surface. Til the End rallied last out on the Tapeta to finish fifth, beaten only 1 ½ lengths for the win. Golden Decision will also be running late for trainer Gustavo Delgado and jockey Cristian Torres.

Laurel's ninth race, an allowance optional claiming event at 5 ½ furlong on the turf, brings together another competitive group. Hugh McMahon saddles Rohrbacher, who has finished first, second or third in 10 of his last 12 starts and 10 of 11 starts at the distance and surface. Charmed, trained by Philip Antonacci, comes into the race off a victory against allowance company at Monmouth Sept. 26 at the distance and on turf.

The Stronach 5 concludes at Golden Gate Fields with its third race, a starter allowance at 1 1/16 mile. Anitanewmercedes goes for his third consecutive victory while Baby Frankie goes for his second consecutive win. Iz Invincible has been a model of consistency, finishing first, second or third in 10 of his last 13 starts for trainer and co-owner William Delia. The gelding reeled off four consecutive victories at Golden Gate earlier in the year.

Stronach Group Warns About Buzzer Use in Training and Racing

September was a busy month for buzzers.

On Sept. 15, the Monmouth Park board of stewards suspended jockey Tomas Mejia for 10 years and fined him $5,000 for possessing an electrical device–commonly referred to as a “buzzer”–during a race run there Sept. 3.

That same day at Indiana Grand, leading Quarter Horse jockey, Sammy Mendez, was “summarily suspended for actions not in the best interest of racing,” and is awaiting a full hearing before the track's board of stewards. According to the Paulick Report, the suspension is connected to use of an illegal electrical device.

Citing these two cases, The Stronach Group–under its 1/ST moniker–circulated at the end of September a memo among the company's racing offices and veterinarians warning that such devices are “illegal and will not be tolerated” in racing, training or on site at any TSG facility.

“Any exercise rider, jockey or horsemen who is found to be using any type of electrical device on a horse will receive a ban from all 1/ST Racing and Training facilities and be escorted off the premises immediately,” wrote Aidan Butler, the company's chief operating officer.

The memo was subsequently circulated among California horsemen.

Butler explained in the memo that it came about after consultation with the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, the Thoroughbred Owners of California, the California Thoroughbred Trainers, and the Florida Horsemen's Benevolent Protection Association.

“I am asking each of you and your track employees (e.g., outriders, etc.) to be vigilant during training and racing in watching for these devices. If anyone observes horses that are acting unusually such as tail flagging among other behaviors, please follow up with the exercise rider/jockey immediately,” wrote Butler, in the memo. “Enough is enough.”

Stronach Group-owned training and racing facilities include in California Santa Anita, Golden Gate Fields and San Luis Rey Downs. In Florida: Gulfstream Park, Gulfstream Park West and Palm Meadows Training Center. And in Maryland: Laurel Park, Pimlico, Rosecroft Raceway and the Bowie Training Center.

The California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) already prohibits use of electrical devices like buzzers–used to shock horses into going faster–during “recognized” meetings within the state.

Part of the rule for “possession of contraband” states: “No person shall have in his possession on the premises during any recognized meeting any electrical stimulating or shocking device commonly known as a battery, or any mechanical stimulating device, or any other appliance, which might affect the speed or actions of a horse.”

According to CHRB spokesperson Mike Marten, in roughly 40 years no jockey in California has been found guilty of actually using an electronic device in a race. Rather, relevant cases have related to possession–or suspected possession–of such a device.

On Wednesday, the TDN asked the CHRB for any recent rulings against license holders believed to have contravened that rule.

“To the best of our knowledge,” the following is accurate, said Marten, who explained that it isn't a comprehensive overview of such cases due to the time given to compile the list and the accuracy of agency records.

The agency's database shows that jockey Carlos Bautista was suspended for one year–between July of 2007 and July of 2008–having been suspected of possessing an electronic device at Fairplex Park in September of 2006.

Pony person Jose Barajas was summarily suspended having failed to appear before the board of stewards at Golden Gate Fields in November of 2012, having been suspected of possessing electronic “contraband.”

In 2018, jockey/valet Pablo Fernandez-Macias was summarily suspended–and his case referred to the CHRB–having failed to appear before the board of stewards at the Los Angeles County Fair Meet at Los Alamitos, again for alleged “possession of contraband.”

On or around Mar. 1 of last year, jockey Cesar Franco was summarily suspended after a buzzer was found in his car at Los Alamitos.

Santa Anita Races Return To Friday’s Stronach 5 Wager

Santa Anita Park's much-anticipated opening day Friday also means it will be one of five featured races as part of the popular Stronach 5.

The cross-country wager with a low 12-percent takeout will also feature races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields. The sequence includes three turf races and maiden special weight events for 2-year-olds from Santa Anita and Laurel.

The Stronach 5 kicks off at 4:19 p.m. with Laurel's eighth race, an intriguing maiden special weight event for 2-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs on the turf.

Trainer Graham Motion will send out two colts making their debut. Northern Aurora, a son of Uncle Mo out of the graded winner Unspurned, sold for $210,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale while Zatip, a son of Tapit out of the Grade 1 winner Zaftig, is a Wertheimer and Frere homebred. Full of Mischief, a son of Into Mischief who sold for $140,000 in May, makes his debut for Michael Trombetta. Godolphin LLC's homebred Holiday House, a son of More Than Ready, will also debut for trainer Michael Stidham.

The Stronach 5 heads to Gulfstream next for the eighth race, a 5 ½ furlong event for fillies and mares on the main track for $20,000 claimers. My Sarasota Star goes out first time off the claim for trainer Georgina Baxter. The 5-year-old mare has won four of 11 starts at Gulfstream and has placed first or second in four of five starts at the distance. Dem a Wonder, owned and trained by Rohan Crichton, drops a bit in company and gets Edwin Gonzalez in the saddle. Mastering Bela looks for her second consecutive victory for trainer Carlos Munoz.

The third leg of the Stronach 5, Laurel's ninth race, features $12,500 claimers going 1 1/8 mile on the turf. The wide-open event has Mokheef dropping in class for trainer Suzanne Stettinius. The 7-year-old son of Street Cry has four wins on the turf. Forest Boyce rides. Vincent Van Gogo has won three consecutive races, two of them over hurdles. Sandwiched between hurdle wins at Colonial Downs and Tryon is a victory in July at Colonial at a mile. Neil Morris trains. Donji makes his debut for trainer Zoe Valvo, who claimed him for $10,000 in August at Colonial.

The Stronach 5 heads west for the final two legs. Santa Anita's third race is a competitive event at five furlongs on the turf for 2-year-olds. Trainer Doug O'Neill will send out Del Mo and Beef Winslow. Beef Winslow, a son of Honor Code, gets blinkers and jockey John Velazquez after finishing seventh in his debut after a wide trip. Del Mo, a son of Uncle Mo out of the unraced mare No Lip Service, will make his debut with Ricardo Gonzalez in the saddle. Little Red Feather Racing's Elevado, fourth in his debut Sept. 11, goes out for trainer Mike Puype. The son of Street Boss brought $190,000 at auction in May. Trainer Peter Miller will send out second-time starters Roy C and Fight On Ron. Roy C was sixth on the turf in his debut at Del Mar in August while Fight On Ron was third Sept. 11 at Los Alamitos.

The fourth race at Golden Gate is where the Stronach 5 will conclude. Fillies and mares with a $5,000 claiming tag will go six furlongs. Always in Vegas gets the rail and returns after an 11-month layoff. Trainer Andy Mathis is 43-percent with horses coming in off a 180-day layoff or more. Arouse N Go finished second Aug. 27 first time off the claim by trainer Jonathan Wong. Brite Tan looks for her second consecutive victory.
