Stronach 5 Highlighted By Turf Races From Santa Anita, Gulfstream

The Stronach 5 will feature five competitive races from four tracks along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout when it begins at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Continuing to show a strong return on investment, Laurel's eighth race begins this week's Stronach 5, a starter allowance at 1 1/16 mile with a tepid 7-2 favorite in King Mauro trained by Michael Gorham and ridden by Sheldon Russell. The gelding looks for his third consecutive victory after beating $8,000 claimers in his last by four. Trainer John Robb saddles Belfour, 3-1, making his first start since Jan. 17 Belfour owns eight victories at Laurel and Robb has saddled 15 winners at the meet.

The ninth race at Laurel serves as the second leg of the sequence. The maiden $40,000 claimer at six furlongs is a wide-open affair with Country Life Farm's Mosler's Touch entering off a second-place finish last time out against similar company. Trainer Kelly Rubley sends out Likely Choice, who caught a sloppy track last out when finishing seventh. Linda Rice ships Amendment Nineteen in from Belmont for her debut.

The Stronach 5 heads west for the third and fourth legs. Santa Anita's third race, a mile turf event for claiming fillies and mares, has a 2-1 choice in Acoustic Shadow and two horses listed at 5-2 on the morning-line in Amiko Chow and Unbreakable. Acoustic Shadow missed by a head in trying to break her maiden Jan. 15 when claimed for $45,000 by Philip D'Amato. Amiko Chow and Unbreakable finished second and third, respectively, beaten less than a length Feb. 21 against similar claiming company.

Golden Gate's third race, the fourth leg of the sequence, features 3-year-old maiden claimers going five furlongs. Evenerevenworse is the 2-1 choice coming off a second-place finish March 5 at 5 ½ furlongs. Emperor's Fisc (9-2) finished third in his second career start Feb. 13, a race in which the runner-up came back to win.

The Stronach 5 wraps up at Gulfstream with the 10th race, a $35,000 maiden claimer at 1 1/16 mile for 3-year-old fillies. Leading trainer Todd Pletcher sends out Zaffing, who drops a bit in company after finishing fourth on the turf Feb. 28. Short Circuit gets the rail after a third-place finish against similar company last time out. Family Time returns to the turf for trainer Dale Romans.

Golden Gate Fields Files Suit Against Activists

In response to an animal rights-driven disruption to live racing earlier this month at Golden Gate Fields, the company which owns the facility has filed suit against the party responsible, Direct Action Everywhere, a self-described global grassroots animal rights network.

On Mar. 4, four animal rights protestors ran on to the track before the first race, lighting flairs and chaining themselves together with inter-locking pipes over their arms. The organization also flew a drone over the action, which was used to broadcast a live feed of events via Facebook.

Once police removed the protestors, Golden Gate Fields conducted the delayed card later that day.

The suit, first reported by the San Jose Mercury-News, was filed Mar. 9 in Alameda County Superior Court, and seeks, among other requests, a temporary restraining order against the defendants, and damages of an amount “to be proven at trial.”

Also documented in the suit is the resulting disruption that day to a vaccination drive being conducted on the racetrack grounds.

“The Berkeley Public Health Division was forced to cancel approximately 200 vaccination appointments scheduled for that day,” the filing states. “Defendants' misconduct therefore not only damaged the GGF business but also risked public health and safety.”

The suit specifically lists four members of the animal rights organization–Omar Aicardi, Rachel Ziegler, Rocky Chau and James Crom–believed to be the ones responsible for the disruption.

The suit adds, however, that these are believed to be “fictitiously-named defendants,” and that plaintiffs will seek to amend this complaint “to set forth their true names and capacities when ascertained.”

In a statement, Direct Action Everywhere quotes Chau, who is named in the suit.

“The billionaires pulling the strings here have no regard for horses or workers, and they want to crush anyone who stands in their way. But money can't stop the changing tide of public sentiment. Threats and lawsuits will not stop us from working to end animal racing in the Bay Area and beyond,” Chau is stated as saying.

The Bay Area racetrack has been under a fierce local spotlight lately, due largely to a significant COVID-19 outbreak within the facility at the end of last year that saw hundreds of workers contract the virus.

The prior October, Berkeley City officials wrote the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) requesting an investigation into equine fatalities at the track.

The CHRB responded with a letter explaining how catastrophic injury rates at the track had remained flat compared to the year prior, before listing a series of increased medication and safety measures the board had recently undertaken state-wide, and intended modifications for the future, including those specifically geared towards Golden Gate.

The suit appears to try to pre-empt expected further actions from Direct Action Everywhere, which is calling for Golden Gate Fields to be shut down.

“Defendants are planning, and will continue, to engage in similar unlawful actions in the future until Defendants achieve their stated goal of shutting down the horse racing business,” the suit states.

On their website, Direct Action Everywhere advertises a meetup scheduled for this weekend to discuss “disruption strategies and tools.”

TDN reached out to a representative for Golden Gate Fields but has not yet received a response.

Golden Gate Fields Files Lawsuit Against Animal Rights Protestors

Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, Calif. has filed a lawsuit against the animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere in an effort to ban those activists from the racetrack grounds, reports The Mercury News. The track is also seeking $25,000 in damages, according to the suit filed March 9 by San Francisco-based firm Allen Matkins, Leck Gamble, Mallory & Nastia in the Alameda County Superior Court.

Four members of the group chained themselves together on the racing surface and delayed races for approximately six hours on March 4, an action which also led Berkeley Public Health Department officials to temporarily shut down a COVID-19 vaccination clinic located at Golden Gate.

Albany assistant city manager Isabelle Leduc said four individuals were arrested without incident at about 6:30 p.m. PT on the evening of March 6, cited for trespassing, and released. The individuals named were: Omar Aicardi (43) of Modesto, Rocky Ming Fan Chau (32) of San Francisco, James Nicholas Crom (29) of Oakland, Rachel Christina Ziegler (28) of Oakland.
