Santa Anita’s Autumn Wagering Menu Includes Golden Hour Pick 4, Golden Hour Double

Santa Anita's 16-day Autumn Meet, which opens this Friday, Oct. 1, will again offer fans a comprehensive wagering menu that will complement a full schedule of world class racing. With four stakes slated for opening day, including the Grade 2, $200,000 Eddie D, which marks a return to sprinting at about 6 ½ furlongs down the Camino Real hillside turf course, interest is running high as horsemen will enter for a nine-race program on Tuesday morning.

Two popular wagers that combine races at Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields, the $1 Golden Hour Pick 4, which features a low 15 percent takeout and the $5 Golden Hour Double, will be offered this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, resume on Oct. 22, 23 & 24 and on closing weekend, Oct. 29, 30 & 31, with the resumption of racing at Golden Gate. (Golden Gate will be dark for three weekends in mid-October during the Big Fresno Fair).

Walk-up admission is welcomed and in addition to betting on-track, fans have a variety of wagering options, including 1 ST.com/Bet, which can be downloaded free of charge at the App Store. In addition to Santa Anita's simulcast signal, all of the track's races will be shown live on TVG.

Santa Anita's popular 20 cent Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot wager, which consists of the final six races on each day's program, is again available, as is the low 14 percent takeout 50 cent Early Pick 5 and 50 cent Late Pick 5.

Providing there is no single ticket winner, the 20 cent Single Ticket Rainbow Pick Six is paid on a daily basis to those consolation tickets with the highest number of winning tickets. Thirty percent of the net Rainbow pool is then carried over to a jackpot pool on the next racing day. Should there be no perfect tickets through Oct. 30, there could be a massive jackpot pool leading into a mandatory payout on closing day, Oct. 31.

The $1 Stronach Five will be offered each Friday throughout the meet and will consist of a fast paced series of five races from Santa Anita, Gulfstream Park, Golden Gate Fields and Laurel Park. The Stronach Five is a one dollar minimum wager with a 12 percent takeout.

Santa Anita will also continue to offer $1 exactas, $2 rolling Daily Doubles, 50 cent rolling Pick 3's, an early 50 cent Pick 4, as well as 10 cent Superfectas on all races with a minimum of six runners.

–20 cent Rainbow Pick Six offered on the final six races each day

–The Stronach Five, a $1 minimum wager with a 12 percent takeout, offered each Friday

–Low 14 percent takeout 50 cent Early Pick 5, as well as 50 cent Late Pick 5

–$1 Golden Hour Pick Four, with 15 percent takeout

–$5 Golden Hour Late Double, with 15 percent takeout

–$2 Win, Place & Show wagering on each race, featuring the lowest takeout (15.43 percent) of any major racetrack in North America

–50 cent Trifectas on each race with a minimum of four scheduled starters

— 50 cent Early Pick 4, which will be comprised of races two through five

UC Davis’ Equine Surgeons, Ophthalmologists Help Camino Del Paraiso Back To The Winner’s Circle

Thanks to UC Davis equine specialists in surgery and ophthalmology, Camino Del Paraiso is back to his winning ways after what could have been a career-ending injury.

Camino Del Paraiso, an 8-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, has never been one to enjoy visits to the farrier. On his way to a shoeing early in the year, the champion racehorse was spooked when being led to the farrier shop at his Golden Gate Fields stable. He smashed his head into a barn wall and took a severe fall. His handlers could see damage to his left eye and called for the onsite veterinarian, who informed them that if they wanted to save the eye, they needed to get to the UC Davis veterinary hospital immediately. Camino Del Paraiso's trainer called owner Herb Moniz, who didn't hesitate for a second and sent him to UC Davis.

Specialists from the Equine Surgical Emergency and Equine Ophthalmology services at UC Davis' Large Animal Clinic observed an anxious horse with abrasions to the left side of his head, with swelling and involuntary muscle spasms surrounding the eye orbit. His third eyelid was prolapsed, and the globe of the left eye could not be located within the orbit. A brief ultrasound was performed which showed a displaced, but intact globe with normal lens position.

The Diagnostic Imaging Service was brought in to get a better diagnosis of the situation. X-rays highlighted the extent of the damage – a complete orbital fracture, but further evaluation would be needed to fully characterize the fracture and the integrity of the eye prior to surgery. So, a CT scan was ordered to get the best details of the injury. There were multiple fracture fragments associated with the orbit causing the globe itself to be pushed inward.

“In many instances like this injury, the eye is removed, and the socket sewn closed,” said Dr. Bridget Nottle, an equine surgery resident, commenting on the severity of the injury. “Camino Del Paraiso is fortunate to have an owner who would go to such lengths to save the eye.”

Based on the location of the fracture and the degree of fragmentation, the surgeons wanted to try to manipulate the fragments back to a normal orientation to allow the globe to return to a more normal position in the orbit under general anesthesia. Working with the ophthalmology team, equine surgeons repaired the fracture and repositioned the eye and muscles surrounding the orbital socket. Following surgery, the globe was noted to be within a more normal position, however, there was residual swelling surrounding the eye as a result of the initial trauma.

Camino Del Paraiso responded well to surgery and improved every day. By the third day of recovery, ophthalmologists were finally able to examine the eye fully. Camino Del Paraiso could follow motion with the repaired eye, clearly showing the eye to still be visible. A recheck ophthalmology examination was performed two days later which revealed continued improvement in the swelling around the eye and the third eyelid.

In total, Camino Del Paraiso was hospitalized at UC Davis for one week. After discharge, he remained on stall rest for six weeks with only brief hand walks daily. Additional rehabilitation at a layup facility was necessary to recover from the severe body soreness from the fall, but Camino Del Paraiso was back to training in five months.

On Sept. 6, almost exactly eight months after the accident, Camino Del Paraiso won the Rolling Green Stakes at Golden Gate Fields in his first race back.

Bought in 2014 as a yearling for only $5,000, Camino Del Paraiso has earned more than $519,000 in 42 starts, with 8 firsts, 12 seconds, and 4 thirds.

Friday’s Stronach 5 Features 12-Percent Takeout, Large Fields

The Stronach 5, which continues to offer a strong return on investment with generous payouts and a low 12-percent takeout, offers large, competitive fields Friday from Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park and Golden Gate Fields.

Last week's Stronach 5 had four horses return $8 or less – including two even-money favorites – and the cross-country wager still returned $1,922.20.

This week the Stronach 5 begins at approximately 4 ET at Gulfstream and concludes less than 90 minutes later at Golden Gate Fields.

The Stronach 5 begins with Gulfstream's fifth race, a claiming event for fillies and mares scheduled over the mile turf course. Kay's Project stretches out after a sixth-place finish at five furlongs last time out. Cactus Kitten has placed in six of nine turf races and comes off a third-place finish against similar after a wide trip last out. La Rusia comes into the event off a pair of second place finishes on a sloppy track and a good turf course. The 4-year-old filly, trained by Victor Barboza Jr., tends to be camera shy with 11 runner-up finishes and one victory.

Laurel's eighth race features Maryland-bred or sired fillies and mares going seven furlongs on the main track. Fool Yourself breaks from the rail and will be searching for her fifth consecutive victory since being claimed by Claudio Gonzalez. Gonzalez will also saddle Lady Fox, who has placed in 10 of 14 starts at Laurel with two wins. Moquist tries to follow up her winning debut at Timonium at 5 ½ furlongs Sept. 5. Marvella Nasty, third against similar company last out, goes out for trainer Brittany Russell.

The Stronach 5's third leg, Laurel's ninth race, features a wide-open field of 2-year-old waiver claimers going six furlongs. Twist 'n Twirl and Baltimore Bulleit come out of the same race Aug. 24. Twist 'n Twirl, third in his debut for trainer Graham Motion, and Baltimore Bulleit, fourth for Claudio Gonzalez, both get blinkers. Vinny, sixth in his debut in July, is a first-time gelding for Tim Keefe.

Gulfstream's seventh race, the fourth leg of the sequence, is a maiden special weight event for 2-year-old fillies on a 7 ½ furlong turf course. Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey's homebred Sister Lou Ann, a daughter of Frosted, will make her debut for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Trainer Mark Casse will send out Dry Humor, a daughter of Practical Joke for her debut, as well as Brush With the Law, who stretches out to two turns after failing to hit the board twice at five furlongs on the turf. Easy Come Easy Go goes out for David Braddy after finishing seventh at the distance and course last time after breaking from the 12 post.

The Stronach 5 concludes with Golden Gate's second race, a claiming event for fillies and mares at six furlongs. Run Like Kona drops in company after an unsuccessful turf debut at Santa Anita in June. Concise Advice has been second or third in her last four starts. Traffic Stopper drops in company after racing the past eight months at Santa Anita, Del Mar and Los Alamitos.

Friday’s Stronach 5: Three Tracks, Five Races In Less Than An Hour

The Stronach 5, featuring a low 12-percent takeout, makes stops Friday at Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields with full fields and two races scheduled for the turf.

The popular wager begins at approximately 4:18 ET at Laurel and concludes less than an hour later at Golden Gate Fields.

The first leg of the Stronach 5 is a $16,000 claimer at Laurel over 5 ½ furlongs on the turf that drew a field of 12 including 2-1 favorite Slippin Jimmy. The 5-year-old gelding, trained by Sarah Nagle, runs for the first time since a fifth-place finish in May at Belmont Park in a $50,000 claimer. Slippin Jimmy has two wins, three seconds and a third in eight starts on the turf. The competition includes So Dialed In, running first off the claim by Ferris Allen, and the lightly raced 5-year-old Bourbon and Ice, trained by Mark Reid.

Gulfstream's sixth race serves as the second leg, a five furlong optional claimer on the turf with a purse of $52,000. Awsum Roar, a winner of 10 races at the distance, is 5-2 in the morning line and will break from the rail for trainer Antonio Sano. Palomita, formerly trained by Chad Brown for e Five Racing, tries the turf for the first time for trainer David Fawkes.

The Stronach 5 returns to Laurel for its ninth race, a restricted, $40,000 allowance test at seven furlongs on the main track. Going to the Lead, who has finished worse than third only once in 14 starts, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite after coming off two consecutive second place finishes by a total of less than a half length. Ain't Da Beer Cold goes out for the second time after a eight-month layoff for Kenneth Cox. Hemp, third in the Chick Lang (G3) earlier this year, is 9-2 and gets Feargal Lynch.

Gulfstream's seventh race is a wide-open mile event for $6,250 non-winners of two claimers with a tepid favorite in Hard Ten, who finished second by a neck last out. Jorge Delgado trains and Chantal Sutherland will ride. Eastern Symphony, trained by Murat Sancal, was last seen finishing fourth at Keeneland in May in a $20,000 claimer. Luca Panici rides. Bad Boy E.J. and Feeling Dangerous both take a drop in company.

The Stronach 5 concludes with Golden Gate's second race, a maiden claiming event at a mile. Predetermination, the 2-1 favorite, gets the rail for trainer Andy Mathis and stretches out from 5 ½ furlongs last out. Evening Ambition, eighth in her debut Sept. 5, and Lady Doc both gets blinkers.
