Stronach 5: Friday Wager Sees Three Winning Tickets Each Worth $47,117

There were only three winning tickets in Friday's Stronach 5, and each was worth $47,117.10.

The popular wager, with an industry-low 12-percent takeout and $100,000 guaranteed pool, featured races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields, and two of the five races in the Stronach 5 produced $50 winners.

Friday's Stronach 5 started with a bang when Palm Reader, a 24-1 shot, wore down pacesetter Sailingintothewind inside the final 50 yards to win Laurel's seventh race on the turf and return $50.20.

After Alastor ($6.60) won Gulfstream's ninth race, Bunting ($7.40) won Laurel's eighth race and Mayan Queen ($6.40) was triumphant in Laurel's ninth, the sequence ended at Golden Gate Fields and 25-1 longshot Hula King ($53.40) winning the second race

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Friday’s Stronach 5 Features Four Turf Races, $100,000 Guaranteed Pool

Four races scheduled on the turf and a $100,000 guaranteed pool highlight Friday's Stronach 5.

The popular wager, with an industry-low 12-percent takeout, will feature three races from Laurel Park and one each from Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields.

Laurel's seventh race, a $42,000 allowance event for fillies and mares going 1 1/16 mile on the All Along Turf Course, begins the Stronach 5 sequence. Cambeliza returns from a 10-month layoff for trainer Arnaud Delacour. The 4-year-old daughter of Curlin broke her maiden at Kentucky Downs last September before finishing third in an allowance event in October at Keeneland.

Gulfstream's ninth race, a turf event for maiden 3-year-olds and up, is up next with a field of 10 going 1 1/16 mile. Laurel's eighth race, for fillies and mares bred or sired in Maryland, will be the third leg while Laurel's ninth race, a mile turf event for fillies and mares on the Dahlia Turf Course, will be the fourth leg. Laurel's ninth race features stakes-placed Bunting and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Michael House's Celebre, making her second start in the U.S. for trainer Graham Motion.

The Stronach 5 wraps up at Golden Gate Fields with the second race, a 1 1/16 mile turf event for maiden claimers 3-year-olds and up. Chase and Colorado will make his first start for trainer Jack Steiner. The son of Tapit drops in after nine-month layoff having spent August, October and November racing at Santa Anita and Del Mar. Cape Point is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the 10-horse field off a third-place finish last time out.

Golden Gate’s Perennial Leading Rider Juan Hernandez Shifting Tack To Southern California

News broke Wednesday morning that perennial Golden Gate Fields leading rider Juan Hernandez will be shifting his tack full-time to Southern California beginning with the second week of the upcoming Los Alamitos Thoroughbred meeting, which spans July 3, 4, and 5.

Hernandez, 28, will be joining forces with longtime agent Craig O'Bryan, who has been idle since Tyler Baze opted for the Oaklawn/Kentucky circuit over a year ago.

“I got a call, asking if I'd be interested in representing Juan,” said O'Bryan. “I said, 'When can he get down here?' The phone is already ringing and I truly believe our business will continue to grow as people see, first-hand, just how good he is.”

How good is Juan Hernandez?

With 135 wins from 429 mounts, he led his nearest competitor by some 77 wins at the conclusion of Golden Gate Fields' 72-day Winter/Spring Meeting this past Sunday, winning at a 31 percent clip. Many racing insiders have been wondering when he was going to make the move to So Cal for some time now, particularly in view of the tremendous success former No Cal rider Abel Cedillo has enjoyed over the past year riding full-time at Santa Anita, Del Mar and Los Alamitos.

“I'm really excited to come and ride with that colony down there,” said Hernandez by phone from Northern California on Thursday. “My wife's family lives in Ontario, near Santa Anita, so our kids will be spending the summer with them. Craig came very highly recommended. I think it's a big plus to go with him because he's had many top riders and he knows everyone down there, he knows the business.”

A 28-year-old native of Veracruz, Mexico, Hernandez, who is married, Melissa, and has two boys aged five and two, had 1,882 wins from 8,726 career mounts through Sunday and with just Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Luis Saez in front of him, he is currently America's third winningest jockey in 2020, with more than 125 wins through this past weekend.

O'Bryan, who enjoyed an eight-year run with Baze, is a second generation agent, following in the footsteps of his legendary father George “Black Heart” O'Bryan.

With a past client list that reads like a Who's Who of Turfdom, Craig O'Bryan has represented Hall of Famers Eddie Delahoussaye (for an incredible eight-year run that included back to back Kentucky Derby victories with Gato del Sol in 1982 and Sunny's Halo in 1983), Alex Solis and Gary Stevens (2013 Breeders' Cup Classic with Mucho Macho Man and 2013 Distaff with Beholder), as well as David Flores, Corey Nakatani, Jose Valdivia, Jr., Aaron Gryder and Baze.

“I've been doing this for 48 years, since 1972,” said O'Bryan. “The main thing now, is that people need to know that Juan is coming here permanently, this isn't just for the summer. For me personally, it's a great opportunity and it's great to be back in action.”

Neptune’s Storm Wears Down Kiwi’s Dream In San Francisco Mile

Neptune's Storm overtook stubborn Australian-bred Kiwi's Dream in deep stretch to win Sunday's Grade 3 San Francisco Mile Stakes, closing-day feature at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif.

Trained by Richard Baltas and ridden by William Antongeorgi III, Neptune's Storm covered one mile on firm turf in 1:35.50, winning by a head and earning $150,000 from the San Francisco Mile's $251,350 purse. He paid $8 to win.

Kiwi's Dream, who similarly was caught in the final strides to lose by a head to Restrainedvengence in the May 25 All American on the Tapeta surface at Golden Gate, was 1 ¾ lengths clear of Camino Del Paraiso in second, with Restrainedvengence, the 8-5 favorite, finishing fourth. Arch Prince, Majestic Eagle, Simply Breathless and Murad Khan completed the order of finish in the race for 3-year-olds and up. All starters carried 125 pounds except for Simply Breathless, the lone mare in the field, who carried 120 under the weight for age conditions.

Neptune's Storm tracked Kiwi's Dream in second from the outset, the latter going right to the front under Golden Gate's leading rider, Juan Hernandez, and setting moderate fractions of :23.97, 48:11, and 1:11.91. Antongeorgi moved Neptune's Storm alongside the frontrunner at the top of the stretch, the seven furlongs clocked in 1:23.88, but Kiwi's Dream proved a tough foe to overtake, giving away grudgingly in the final yards for locally-based trainer Victor Trujillo.

A 4-year-old gelding by Stormy Atlantic out of the Irish-bred mare Immortal Life, by Iffraaj, Neptune's Storm was winning for the sixth time in 16 career starts. His only previous graded stakes victory came Oct. 19 at Belmont Park in the G2 Hill Prince. Neptune's Storm was a close second Nov. 30 in the G1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar and he comes out of a seventh-place finish to Raging Bull in the G1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita May 25.

Neptune's Storm was bred in Kentucky by Tracy Farmer and races for CYBT, Saul Gevertz, Lynn Gitomer, Mike Goetz, Michael Nentwig and Daniel Weiner.

Live racing of the 2019-2020 Winter/Spring meet at Golden Gate concluded on Sunday with mandatory payouts in the Pick 5's, Rolling Super High Five and Golden Pick Six jackpot wagers. Racing resumes at Golden Gate Fields on July 29 with the “Sonoma County Fair Meet at Golden Gate Fields” which runs through August 11. The Golden Gate Fields Summer meet immediately follows with live racing from August 12 through October 6.
