Golden Gate Fields To Guarantee $200,000 Late Pick 4 Pools On Gold Rush Weekend April 24-25

Golden Gate Fields racing officials announced the bayside racecourse in Albany, Calif.,will guarantee the Late Pick 4 pools on Gold Rush Weekend Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25, at $200,000. The Late Pick 4 sequence consists of the last four races every day and is a 50-cent minimum bet. Gold Rush Weekend, a two-day festival, features eight stakes races; a half dozen on Saturday and two more on Sunday.

“We are expecting a terrific weekend of racing all around,” said Golden Gate Fields General Manager and Vice President David Duggan. “We truly appreciate the support of our horseplayers worldwide and very much look forward to providing them with an excellent product to watch and wager on next weekend. With that, we have guaranteed our Late Pick 4 pools on Saturday [April 24] and Sunday [April 25] at $200,000. Our inaugural Gold Rush Weekend in 2019 was a success and we are equally excited about this year's event.”

The marquee race of the weekend, the Grade 3 $250,000 San Francisco Mile on Saturday, attracted 19 nominations led by Grade 1 winners Hit the Road, Keeper Ofthe Stars and Ohio, Grade 2 winners Smooth like Strait and Brown Storm and Grade 3 winner Sombeyay. Other stakes races on Saturday: the Camilla Urso on turf for filly and mare sprinters (28 nominations), the Golden Poppy for filly and mare grass routers (21), the California Oaks for 3-year-old fillies (16), the Lost in the Fog for main-track sprinters (16) and the California Derby for 3-year-olds (12).

On Sunday, California-breds take center stage in co-featured, turf-mile stakes races. The Silky Sullivan, for California-bred or sired 3-year-olds, attracted 18 nominations. The Campanile, for California-bred or sired 3-year-old fillies, received 19 nominations. Entries for Gold Rush Weekend Saturday will be drawn on Wednesday, with entries for the Sunday card to be taken on Thursday.

Currently, Golden Gate Fields offers fans the chance to watch races on-site at a limited capacity. Those who wish to attend Gold Rush Weekend, or any live race day at Golden Gate, can visit Goldengatefields.com and purchase tickets through the website. General Admission and walk-ups are not permitted at this time.

Formful Stronach 5 From Gulfstream, Golden Gate Yields $617.80 Payout

The Stronach 5 returned multiple payoffs of $617.80 following a rather formful sequence Friday.

The Stronach 5, the multi-race, multi-track wager that features an industry-low 12 percent takeout, offered a sequence with three straight races from Gulfstream Park, followed by two from Golden Gate Fields. There were 146 tickets that correctly selected all five winners.

The Stronach 5 sequence was kicked off at Gulfstream Park with a late-closing victory by Bob Hess Jr.-trained C'Mon Karen ($8.80) in Race 7, a six-furlong starter optional claiming allowance. Making his first start for trainer Carlos David, Grade 1-placed Kroy ($4.60) won the second leg of the Stronach 5 in Race 8 at Gulfstream via the disqualification of the first-place finisher, Til The End, in the featured 1 1/16-mile optional claiming allowance on turf. Christophe Clement-trained Mumbai ($3.20) captured Gulfstream's Race 9, a maiden special weight event for 3-year-olds on turf, before the Stronach 5 action switched to Golden Gate Fields for the final two legs.

Blaine Wright-trained Wahasha ($11) registered a front-running victory in Golden Gate Fields' Race 3, a five-furlong sprint for $8,000 claiming maidens, before Jonathan Wong-trained Tyler's Tek ($10.40) closed out the Stronach 5 sequence with a victory in Race 4, a mile turf race for $6,250 claimers.

Friday’s Stronach 5 Features Racing From Gulfstream, Golden Gate

Three races from Gulfstream Park and two from Golden Gate Fields, including three turf races, will highlight Friday's Stronach 5.

The Stronach 5, with an industry-low 12-percent takeout, will begin with three consecutive races from Gulfstream before concluding with two from Golden Gate.

The sequence begins with Gulfstream's seventh race, a starter optional claimer at six furlongs for 3-year-old fillies and a 2-1 favorite breaking from the rail in Briella, claimed two races back by trainer Kelly Breen for $50,000. Paco Lopez has the mount. Breaking alongside the favorite is Pulling Strings, who broke her maiden last time out by 6 ½ lengths for a $12,500 claiming tag. Edgard Zayas has the mount.

Gulfstream's eight race, an allowance optional claimer for state-bred 4-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 mile on the turf, drew a field of eight with an 8-5 favorite in Kroy, a winner of $415,000 claimed last out by Carlos David. Til the End draws the rail after breaking from the 12 post last out going a mile on the turf. Saffie Joseph Jr. trains.

Gulfstream's ninth race, the third leg of the Stronach 5, is a maiden special weight event for fillies and mares at five furlongs on the turf. The field of nine has a 2-1 favorite in Mumbai for trainer Christophe Clement and jockey Paco Lopez, who was beaten by a neck last time out under similar conditions. Trainers Ralph Nicks, Georgina Baxter and Michael McDonald all send out first-time starters.

The action heads west and Golden Gate for the final two legs of the Stronach 5. A dozen maiden claiming 3-year-old fillies go five furlongs in Race 3 at Golden Gate. It's a wide-open affair with Winning Appeal, second in three of her last four starts, the 5-2 favorite. Blaine Wright will saddle Don't Rub It, second or third in her last four starts.

The Stronach 5 concludes with Golden Gate's fourth race, a claiming event for eight 3-year-olds and up at a mile on the turf. Pioneerofthestorm (5-2) and Blackout (3-1) break from posts seven and eight, respectively. Blackout has registered seven wins on the turf while Pioneerofthestorm has placed in five of eight starts on the turf. Tyler's Tek goes back to the turf after a wide trip at 6 ½ furlongs last time out.

Favorites Dominate Stronach 5; 144 Winners Each Get $717

With favorites winning three of the five races, Friday's Stronach 5 returned $717.70. There were 144 winning tickets.

The Stronach 5 featured races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields as well as an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

Shane's Jewel, an even-money favorite ridden by Sheldon Russell, began the Stronach 5 by winning Laurel's eighth race, a seven-furlong starter optional claimer. Gulfstream's eighth race, a mile turf event, served as the second leg of the sequence, and it was won by the stakes winner and graded stakes placed Kelsey's Cross ($11), ridden by Chantal Sutherland.

Laurel's ninth race, a waiver maiden claimer for 3-year-olds, was the third leg of the Stronach 5 sequence, and it was won by favored Portal One for trainer Hugh McMahon. The Stronach 5 returned to Gulfstream for Race 9, an optional claimer at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf. Serenade a Kitten ($9.60), trained by Mary Eppler, was game winner for jockey Edwin Gonzalez. The Stronach 5 concluded with Golden Gate's third race, a claiming event for fillies and mares at 5 ½ furlongs, won by the 6-5 favorite Real Keeper ($4.60).
