Jockey Kyle Frey Nearing 1,000-Win Milestone At Del Mar

Jockey Kyle Frey enters Friday's program at Del Mar with 998 wins from 5,903 career starts according to Equibase statistics. He's scheduled aboard three mounts in the eight-race program and is booked for three more on Saturday and six on Sunday.

The 29-year-old from Tracy, Calif., said he has been aware of his proximity to the milestone 1,000th victory for “a week or two,” but is approaching it philosophically.

“I embrace it, but I'm not thinking about it or paying attention to it that much,” Frey said. “I've noticed that sometimes when guys near a milestone they slow down – I don't if it's because they're too aware or nervous or what. I'm not nervous, I'm just trying to go out and do my best to win every race.”

Frey has 157 wins from 759 mounts with purse earnings of $4.1 million and ranks 50th among jockeys nationally for money won this year. He came to the summer meeting with plans to ride a few days at Del Mar and then return to Golden Gate Fields in San Francisco, where he was among the top riders.

He won two races the second day of the local meeting, then the Fleet Treat Stakes on I'm So Anna for trainer Steve Sherman on the second weekend and tabled the notion of returning to Northern California. He notched 14 wins from 145 mounts with purse earnings of nearly $1 million and finished eighth in the rider standings for the 31-day session, a breakthrough time in what has become the best season of his career, topping $4 million in purse earnings for the first time since 2011.

“That (summer meeting) meant everything,” Frey said. “I owe it to the trainers who gave me a chance on good horses. I was able to execute to their plans early and things worked out well.”

With 12 mounts over the next three days, Frey estimated chances are “pretty good” he'll be able to put 1,000 wins in the rearview mirror.

“Anytime you're in a race, you've got a chance,” Frey said.

Three Juvenile Races Top Friday’s Stronach 5 Wager

The key to having a winning ticket in Friday's Stronach 5 could rest on three juvenile races, including a maiden special weight event from Laurel Park and a starter optional claimer from Gulfstream Park.

The Stronach 5, featuring a low 12-percent takeout and a maiden event at Golden Gate Fields, will begin at approximately 3:40 ET when maiden fillies and mares go six furlongs in a $10,000 claiming event at Laurel.

Laurel's seventh race is a wide-open, six-furlong event with a dozen fillies and mares. Moon Biz draws the rail and returns to the main track after trying the turf at Laurel in her second career start after a fifth-place finish on the main track against better at Pimlico in August. Scarlet's Song returns off a near 10-month break for Robert Klesaris. Time After Time makes her second start for trainer Michael Trombetta after a seventh-place finish on the turf in her debut Oct. 15. Trainer Kelly Rubley sends out Vinegar Veggies second time off the claim. Leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez will saddle I Can Run, second by only a neck last time out at Delaware Park.

Gulfstream's eighth race, the second leg of the Stronach 5, is a starter optional claimer for 2-year-olds. Peter D returns after winning the Journeyman Stud Juvenile Oct. 23. The He's Had Enough gelding has won two of three starts. Run Lea Run, sixth in the Hollywood Beach in September, and Steel City Dude, a winner last out for trainer David Fawkes, are also expected to take money.

Laurel's eighth race, the third leg of the sequence, features 2-year-old fillies in a maiden special weight event at six furlongs. Middle Island goes out second time for trainer Brittany Russell, who is 33-percent at the meet and 31-percent with maidens making their second start. Estate is a $300,000 yearling buy going out for the second time after finishing third Oct. 21 in her debut for Trombetta.

Golden Gate's second race, a $5,000 maiden claimer for fillies and mares, serves as the next race in the sequence. Quick Time has finished second or third in six of nine career starts and drops a bit in class. Stein's Girl gets the rail and brings four second-place finishes to the race. Lil Tinker was off slow and finished fifth last time out after closing to finish second the time before.

It's back to Gulfstream for its ninth race, a $50,000 claiming event for 2-year-old maidens. Trainer Michael Stidham sends out two in Solar Tap, second his last out at Delaware, and Astral Weeks, a son of Mohaymen who bears the same name as the celebrated album by Van Morrison. California Frolic was second by a head Sept. 25 for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. in his second career start. Never Say Know was a beaten favorite by a head last out for trainer Brendan Walsh. The son of No Nay Never will go out for the sixth time.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Hollendorfer Legal Battle Against Stronach Group Wages On

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is soldiering on in his legal fight to be allowed to enter horses at racetracks owned by The Stronach Group. Thoroughbred Daily News reported Monday that Hollendorfer has filed a motion for preliminary injunction in Los Angeles County Superior Court, seeking the ability to enter horses at the upcoming Santa Anita meet.

According to the TDN, Hollendorfer's filing indicates he isn't interested in acquiring stabling, as he is based at Los Alamitos and plans to continue training from there. His motion suggests that track ownership is attempting to bypass the power granted to the California Horse Racing Board by making an illegal determination about whether or not he can enter horses at one of its racetracks.

The argument is similar to one he has made in other pending cases against Del Mar and Golden Gate Fields ownership in other county courts. He has not so far been successful in those cases, but they remain ongoing.

Hollendorfer has been scrapping with California track ownership since September 2019. Stronach Group officials noted at the time they had concerns about safety and welfare practices in his barn. The current filing claims two key veterinarians have since admitted they had not based their opinions on first-hand knowledge.

Friday’s Stronach 5 Highlighted By Field Of 12 In Cellars Shiraz Stakes

The Stronach 5 will offer an interesting puzzle for bettors Friday with several new faces arriving at Gulfstream Park for the $65,000 Cellars Shiraz and a stakes-quality optional allowance claiming event on the turf at Laurel Park.

The Stronach 5, which also includes a field of 10 going a mile at Golden Gate Fields, will kick off at approximately 3:49 ET and once again feature a low 12-percent takeout.

The Stronach 5 begins with Laurel's seventh race, a 5 ½ furlong maiden event for 2-year-old fillies which drew a dozen including first-time starters from Brittany Russell, Michael Trombetta, Jeremiah O'Dwyer, Ferris Allen and Lacey Gaudet. Leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez will saddle American Barb, fifth over a muddy track in her debut Oct. 16 at Charles Town.

Gulfstream's eighth race, the Cellars Shiraz for 3-year-old fillies at a mile and 70 yards over the Tapeta, will serve as the second leg of the Stronach 5. An influx of out-of-towners have entered including Bellissime, who has two wins over all-weather for trainer Brendon Walsh. Mademoiselle Nova ships in for trainer Mark Casse after winning her last two starts at Woodbine. Casse has also entered Inthewinnerscircle, fourth last out in the Dueling Grounds Oaks. Leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. will saddle a pair in Tik Tok Famous and Champagne Ivy, second and third last time out respectively in the Miss Gracie at Gulfstream. Alpha Zulu, trained by Kelsey Danner, broke her maiden at Colonial before finishing fourth at Monmouth under allowance conditions.

Laurel's eighth race, the third leg of the sequence, features fillies and mares going six furlongs on the turf. Can the Queen is one of the likely favorites with two victories in her last three starts including the Sensible Lady Turf Dash at Pimlico in July. Tim Keefe will saddle Dendrobia, second in the Jameela in July at Pimlico. Two-time stakes winner Dontletsweetfoolya is entered for main track only. Triplet, seventh last out over a sloppy track, was competitive against this class in August when racing on the turf.

Golden Gate Fields plays host to the fourth leg of the Stronach 5. The mile maiden claiming event ($12,500) sees trainer Jonathan Wong sending out Luvtheoneurwith, who drops a bit in class after placing second or third in six of his first seven starts. Even Steven draws the rail and also drops in class after finishing second against $30,000 maiden claimers in September. The son of Connect comes into the race off a fifth-place finish on the turf against maiden special weight company

The Stronach 5 concludes at Gulfstream with its 10th race and fillies and mares maiden claimers going five furlongs on the Tapeta. Bordeaux Legacy, beaten a neck last out against this same company, will be one of the favorites along with Driving Wind, who finished three-quarters of a length behind Bordeaux Legacy last time out.
