Trainer Herbertson Enters No Contest Plea In Sexual Assault Case

Trainer Ari Herbertson has entered a plea of no contest in Alameda Superior Court to one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object in connection with an assault case brought against him in 2020.

Herbertson, of El Sobrante, Calif., was charged with four felonies in February of last year after an assault that took place near Golden Gate Fields. Herbertson was arrested at the racetrack after law enforcement indicated a DNA match to Herbertson had been made in the case.

Herbertson did not saddle any more runners after his 2020 arrest, though he did resume training this year. He has not had any more starters at Golden Gate Fields. His training license with the California Horse Racing Board remains active and does not expire until the end of this year.

“We cannot just suspend someone's license based on arrest or allegation,” said CHRB spokesman Mike Marten. “When a criminal investigation is taking place, especially on an incident that occurs off the track, we do not interfere with the local investigation and prosecution but assist in any way we can. We monitor the process, as we did in this case from the beginning, and if and when there is a conviction, we obtain the appropriate documents and determine whether we can file a complaint alleging a rule violation, which we are doing now. In other words, we cannot just take someone's license without a hearing and the criminal part always goes before the administrative one.”

Herbertson started 59 runners in 2021 and 25 in 2020 at Fresno, Emerald Downs, and Turf Paradise.

Stronach 5: Six Winning Tickets Each Worth $13,619

There were six winning tickets in Friday's Stronach 5 with each worth $13,619.70.

The popular wager featured races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields as well as a low 12-percent takeout.

The sequence kicked off with Stay In winning Laurel's seventh race and returning $16.60. After Naughty Shirley ($4.20) won Gulfstream's eighth race and Kingston Pike ($8.80) won Laurel's eighth race, the 20-1 shot Coolcross won the second race at Golden Gate returning $43.20. The Stronach 5 concluded with Morning Colors ($8.20) winning Gulfstream's ninth and final race of the day.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

‘The Russell Baze Act Of Yesteryear’: Jockey Terrero Back In The Saddle After Near-Fatal Accident

Jockey Pedro Terrero suffered a severe head injury when his mount clipped heels in a race at Golden Gate Fields on Feb. 2, 2019. He had to be resuscitated on-track and underwent emergency surgery to relieve swelling in his brain. Over two years later, reports berkeleyside.org, the rider is not only back in the saddle, but currently leading the jockey standings at the Berkeley, Calif. track.

Terrero started getting back on horses in March, and built up his strength over a series of months. He's already won two riding titles since his return.

“Terrero is here six days a week and will jog, gallop, work a horse,” trainer Manny Badilla told berkeleyside.org. “He's doing the Russell Baze act of yesteryear, and he deserves every bit of the success he is having right now. He has earned every bit of it.”

“Maybe I am riding better,” said Terrero. “If I am, maybe it's because I love what I do and I almost lost it. I really love it. This is my second chance. I'm lucky to be alive and I'm lucky to be riding horses again.”

Dr Pescado Rallies To Win Golden Nugget At Golden Gate Fields

Grey or roan gelding Dr Pescado sat off the pace before rallying past early pacesetter and runner-up finisher Stanford Bay late in to win the 6-furlong, $50,000 Golden Nugget Stakes for 2-year-olds on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, Calif.

Dr Pescado, ridden by Pedro Terrero, broke his maiden in his first career start by over 7 lengths. After running poorly while dueling on the lead in his most recent afternoon appearance before Saturday's stakes win, Dr Pescado was asked to relax off a pacesetter. Sitting off the speed was not an issue for the California-bred son of Fullbridled, who stayed on the rail for most of the way before switching outside and running past his rivals in the final furlong. Dr Pescado completed the six furlongs in 1:11.51 and won the contest by a half-length.

Dr Pescado paid $9.40 to win, $4.20 to place, and $2.20 to show. Stanford Bay paid $3.00 to place and $2.10 to show. 6-5 post-time favorite C'Mon Man completed the trifecta and paid $2.10 to show, with Highland Ghost and Northvale Road rounding out the field.

Dr Pescado, bred in California by Juan Heredia, is trained by Felix Rondan and co-owned by Rondan and longtime business partner Ruben Arechiga. With the Golden Nugget Stakes victory, Dr Pescado improved his lifetime record to 2 wins and 1 fourth-place finish from three lifetime starts with career earnings of $59,618.

Live racing resumes at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday afternoon with first post at 12:45 PM for an 8-race program.
