Avenue De France Gets Second Stakes Win In Miss America At Golden Gate

5-year-old mare Avenue de France saved ground the whole way around the racetrack and shot by the early pace players to win the $50,000 Miss America Stakes on Sunday afternoon at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, Calif. The Miss America, originally scheduled for the turf, was transferred to the Tapeta main track after a steady rainfall hit the Bay Area throughout the day on Sunday.

Avenue de France, who won the Luther Burbank Stakes on turf in August, sat in fourth position early on in the race and hugged the rail for the entire one-mile journey. Down the stretch, a seam opened up for Avenue de France, who darted forward, pushed past runner-up finisher and 7-5 favorite Brooke in the final stages, and won the mile and a sixteenth contest by a length. Avenue de France stopped the clock for the 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.19 seconds. Early pacesetter Sloane Garden finished third, followed by Reiwa, Tapwater, and Blue Diva.

Avenue de France paid $17.00 to win, $5.40 to place, and $3.60 to show. Brooke paid $3.40 to place and $2.60 to show while Sloane Garden returned $4.20 to show.

Avenue De France, guided to victory by Assael Espinoza, is trained by Southern California condition Leonard Powell. She is owned in partnership by the Benowitz Family Trust, Convergence Stables, Madaket Stables LLC, Wonder Stables, and Mathilde Powell. With the stakes victory, Avenue de France improved her lifetime record to five wins and four third-place finishes from 14 lifetime starts, with career earnings of $157,612. Avenue de France was bred in France by SARL Jedburgh Stud and Theirry de Heronniere.

Sunday concludes the 2021 Fall Meet at Golden Gate Fields. Live racing resumes the day after Christmas, Sunday, December 26, commencing the upcoming Winter/Spring meet which runs from late December to mid-June. First post is 12:45 PM PT.

Rebalation Runs Down Nardini To Take Bear Fans Stakes

In November, the El Dorado Shooter Stakes for California-bred or sired sprinters was won by Top Harbor, who is out of stakes-winning broodmare Reba Is Tops. On Saturday at Golden Gate Fields in Berkely, Calif., Top Harbor's older sister Rebalation won the “filly and mare version” of the El Dorado Shooter, the Bear Fans Stakes, running down race favorite Nardini in the concluding stages to pick up her first career stakes victory.

Rebalation, ridden to victory by veteran Frank Alvarado, sat off the pace before unleashing a ferocious rally in the final furlong. 7-5 race favorite Nardini skipped away from the competition in the final furlong and had opened up multiple lengths at that point, but 4-1 second choice Rebalation had enough in the tank to run down Nardini in the final strides. The official winning margin was a half-length and the six furlongs on Tapeta was completed by Rebalation in 1:09.62 seconds.

Rebalation paid $10.80 to win, $4.00 to place, and $3.40 to show. Nardini returned $3.20 to place and $2.80 to show while Tip Top Gal (off at odds of 15-1) paid $5.40 to show. 80-1 longshot J and K Express completed the superfecta and Carolina Mia ran fifth. They were followed in by Princess Vivian, Getting Sideways, Draw Me, Daffodil Sweet, Dee Gee, Square Peggy, Ima Happy Cat, and Hot Rageous.

Rebalation, bred in California by her owners Gordy Jarnig, Kenny Marshall, and Eric Schweiger, now boasts a rock-solid record of five wins, one second, and three third-place finishes from 11 lifetime starts. The 4-year-old filly has accrued lifetime earnings of $137,328.

Live racing resumes at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday with 11 races and an early first post of 11:45 AM PT. Sunday is Closing Day of the Fall Meet at Golden Gate, with a mandatory payout in the Golden Pick Six jackpot wager. The Pick 6, beginning in Race 6, has a $48,120 carryover heading into the Sunday card. There are also mandatory payouts in the Early Pick 5 (Races 1-5) and Late Pick 5 (Races 7-11), and the Rolling Super High Five in Race 11. The marquee race of the day is Race 9, the $50,000 Miss American Stakes for filly and mare turf routers.

Golden Gate Fields Has $44,023 Early Pick 5 Carryover On Saturday

With no winning tickets in the Early Pick 5 on Friday afternoon at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif., the Saturday program features an Early Pick 5 carryover of $44,023. Track officials project at least a quarter million dollar new-money bet into the Saturday carryover.

The 50-cent minimum Early Pick 5 consists of the first five races and is a popular, low 14% takeout bet. Race 1, the first leg of the Early Pick 5, has a scheduled post time of 11:45 a.m. PT/2:45 p.m. ET. The last leg is Race 5, with an approximate post of 1:45 p.m. PT.

Race 1 is a maiden claiming sprint with eight set to compete. The morning line favorite, Mr Botanicals, is likely to go off as a heavy favorite. Race 2 is a contentious heat for hard-knocking claiming sprinters, and the third race is a similarly competitive group of routers. Among the main contenders in Race 3 are Good Bye Putin and Rocks and Salt, both shipped north by trainer Carla Gaines in search of easier company.

Race 4 is the only turf race in the sequence – a maiden special weight route for fillies and mares. Local contender Assignation comes off a runner up finish at the level and is the 9-5 morning line favorite while Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale sends Bellize back to the Bay Area after a second-place finish at Golden Gate in October. Race 5, another sprint race, attracts synthetic specialist Bear Chum, an ultra-impressive 8 for 10 on the Golden Gate Tapeta. He is the 5-2 morning line favorite in a field of 8.

Eleven races are on the docket for Saturday's card. The signature event is Race 9, the Bear Fan Stakes for California-bred filly and mare sprinters. A large field of 13 is entered to run.

Horseplayers should also note that Sunday afternoon is Closing Day of the fall meet, with mandatory payouts in the Golden Pick 6, Rolling High 5, and both Pick 5 wagers. Like Saturday, Sunday has 11 races and an 11:45 a.m. PT early first post.

Boise Upsets Gold Rush Stakes At Golden Gate

Under a confident ride from local jockey Evin Roman, 2-year-old colt Boise sat off a fast pace before threading the needle between horses in midstretch, surging past a handful of runners, and nailing 8-5 race favorite Degree of Risk late to win the feature race at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, Calif., on Saturday, the $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes. Run at the one-mile distance on Tapeta, Boise completed the eight furlongs in 1:37.96 seconds.

Boise sat off a fast pace of :23.17 and :46.85 before beginning a move midway on the far turn. Swinging for home, Boise continued to move forward between horses, found a seam in midstretch, and surged to the lead with 50 yards left to go. The official margin of victory was a half-length.

Boise, trained by Jonathan Wong and owned by the partnership group of Jason Hall, Scott Herbertson, and Sheldon Steinmetz, returned $5.00 to win, $3.00 to place, and $2.40 to show. Runner up finisher Degree of Risk paid $3.00 to place and $2.40 to show while Dr Pescado paid $5.40 to show. C'Mon Man completed the superfecta, early pacesetter Il Capitano held fifth, followed by Saint Ives, Bandera Azteca, Dimmi Quando, and Midnight Mojo.

With Saturday's stakes win, Boise improved his lifetime record to two wins from three starts. His lone off-the-board finish was a fourth-place effort in the Qatar Gold Mile on Breeders' Cup Friday. His career earnings from three starts is up to $72,000. Boise, bred in Kentucky by Upson Downs Farm, is a son of Temple City purchased for $27,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale of 2020.

A 9-race card ends the racing on Sunday at Golden Gate Fields. Closing Week is next week, with Friday through Sunday racing. Next Sunday features mandatory payouts in the Pick 6, Rolling High Five, and both Pick 5 bets, with the feature race on Closing Day going as the Miss America Stakes for fillies and mare turf routers.
