Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Wednesday's Insights features a half-sister to the well-regarded Going Global (Ire) at Cork.

16.29 Cork, Mdn, €16,000, 2yo, f, 8fT
FOXTROT ZULU (IRE) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), a 450,000gns Tatts Book 1 purchase by Al Shira'aa Farms, gets going for the Ger Lyons stable and is an intriguing proposition as a half-sister to the GI Del Mar Oaks heroine Going Global (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and the group 3-winning sprinter Mitbaahy (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}). Among her peers is Ballydoyle's Grateful (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a daughter of the luminary Tepin (Bernstein) who was only ninth at The Curragh last month.

Fasig Bound Going Global Adds Another Graded Tally

Just minutes after her stablemate Balnikhov (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) took Keeneland's GIII Bryan Station S., millionaire Going Global added another graded tally to her CV in what is likely to be the final start of her career. The bay is set to be offered next Sunday as hip 292 at Fasig-Tipton's Night of the Stars.

The Irish import won six of her first seven Stateside starts, including the GI Del Mar Oaks last August followed by a score in this event last term when it was held at Del Mar as part of Breeders' Cup weekend. Her Grade II victories this year came in the Apr. 9 GII Royal Heroine S. and Aug. 13 GII Yellow Ribbon H., and she was looking to settle a score with Avenue de France (Fr) (Cityscape {GB}), who turned the tables on her last time in Del Mar's GII John C. Mabee S. Sept. 10.

Away in second, Going Global was taken back one slot approaching the first bend and took up a perfect rail spot. She split foes and went for the lead after six panels in 1:10.80, quickly spurted clear in upper stretch and held sway from there.

“I was on the right horse,” said winning rider Umberto Rispoli. “She is very easy to ride. Once I hit the turn to go home, I just pressed the button and she did the rest. She can go forever, and it's a good way to go out. It's always sad to see a horse like her go. I feel so privileged and grateful to have been on her for her final race.”

Added conditioner Phil D'Amato, “She's just the epitome of a champion in my heart. She's done so much for me. She's won many graded stakes in stylish fashion and she's probably the best grass filly I've ever trained… It means a lot and to send her out, potentially a winner, I mean that's what I thought we owed to her, and she did it in stylish fashion… She just has all the attributes, the heart, the will and an unbelievable turn of foot.”

Co-owner Michael Nentwig, who has enjoyed an incredible run with European imports in recent years, said while fighting back tears: “She is an amazing filly. She is a once in a lifetime horse. It is sad to see her go. This is tough. She is so tough. She leaves next Thursday for the sale. If the right price is not met, then we will bring her back and decide about racing her again.”

Pedigree Notes:

Going Global is one of a trio of highest-level winners from her sire's first crop, and one of his 11 group/graded winners, but is the only to do so in the U.S. despite a number of other productive runners in the States, including Friday's Chelsey Flower S. runner-up Tax Implications (GB). Horse of the Year and GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Invasor (Arg) has sired the dams of three graded/group winners.

After producing Going Global and her year-younger Group 3-winning half-brother Mitbaahy (Ire), dam Wrood's subsequent foals have been in very high demand. Her now 2-year-old filly Canadiansmokeshow (Ire) (U S Navy Flag) was a €290,000 Goffs Orby yearling and was most recently second at Southwell 20 days earlier, while her yearling filly by Saxon Warrior (Jpn) fetched 450,000gns from Al Shira'aa Racing during Book 1 of Tattersalls October. Going Global has a full brother foaled Apr. 23.

Going Global Makes Amends in Del Mar Oaks

Going Global (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) was given a letter-perfect steer from the in-form Flavien Prat and outkicked an unlucky Closing Remarks (Vronsky) to salute in Saturday's GI Del Mar Oaks.

Looking to avenge her defeat at the hands of Madone (Vancouver {Aus}) in the GII San Clemente S., Going Global was off without incident from gate three and took up a mid-field position as Javanica (Medaglia d'Oro) led at a moderate tempo from 60-1 Feathers (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Ivy League (Medaglia d'Oro) into the first turn. Switched off nicely under a long hold down the backstretch, Going Global was felt for at the three-eighths marker and loomed up into contention, getting first run on the rail-skimming Closing Remarks and leaving Umberto Rispoli praying for a way out. The favorite bulled her way out three deep at the top of the lane, splitting Feathers to her inside and Ivy League to the outside, kicked it into another gear at the eighth pole and won the 220-yard sprint home. Closing Remarks was locked away into the final furlong, and when she saw daylight, she hit her best stride, but it was all a fraction too late. Fluffy Socks (GB) (Slumber {GB}) came with an unimpeded run from the latter third of the field to round out the triple.

A maiden winner over the Dundalk all-weather in four Irish starts for trainer Mick Halford, Going Global made an immediate impression upon import, winning the GIII Sweet Life S. sprinting over the Santa Anita turf course on Valentine's Day. She won her next three going a route of ground–the one-mile China Doll S. Mar. 6 following by the GIII Providencia S. Apr. 3 and the May 22 GIII Honeymoon S.–and was beaten a half-length into second by Madone in the San Clemente.

“I was up a little closer today because the pace was slow early,” Prat said after winning his third stakes of the afternoon and scoring his first Del Mar Oaks. “But she was always traveling well, so I wasn't worried. I had plenty of horse. I was just waiting to find a spot to run. When I asked her she really got going.”

Pedigree Notes:

Going Global is one of 14 stakes winners and one of seven group/graded winners from the first two crops for his Tally-Ho Stud-based stallion, a son of Acclamation (GB) who was represented as recently as Friday by G2 Gimcrack S. winner Lusail (Ire).

Going Global is one of three winners from three to race for her dam, each of which has achieved black-type, including the mare's 4-year-old Group 3–placed son Finans Bay (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and 2-year-old colt Mitbaahy (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}), who was third in Saturday's five-furlong Listed Julia Graves Roses S. at York.

Wrood, a half-sister to GSW Racer Forever (Rahy) and to the dam of SW & GSP Gallic Star (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), has a yearling filly by U S Navy Flag and a filly foal by Saxon Warrior (Jpn).

Going Global Rides Hot Streak Into San Clemente

Going Global (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) looks to take her American record to five-for-five in Saturday's GII San Clemente S. at Del Mar. Breaking her maiden in her fourth and final European start, the bay captured the GIII Sweet Life S. at Santa Anita Feb. 14 in her first start for Phil D'Amato. Capturing the China Doll S. Mar. 6, she took the GIII Providencia S. Apr. 3 and was a decisive winner of the GIII Honeymoon S. May 22.

Madone (Vancouver {Aus}) looks to rebound off a sixth-place finish in the Honeymoon. A two-time stakes winner as a juvenile, the dark bay previously captured the GIII Senorita S. at Santa Anita May 1.

Closing Remarks (Vronsky) has been knocking at the door of a graded stakes victory. A stakes winner against Cal-breds in January, she was second to Going Global in both the China Doll and Providencia. The chestnut was last seen rallying to be third in the Senorita.
