Cheveley Park Glory For No Nay Never’s Alcohol Free

Like last year’s G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park S. winner Millisle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) beaten in the G3 Dick Poole Fillies’ S. at Salisbury Sept. 3, Jeff Smith’s Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) made a similar step forward to prove fastest where it mattered in Saturday’s fillies’ feature at Newmarket. Quickly able to head the fast-breaking G2 Lowther S. winner Miss Amulet (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}), the heavily-supported 7-2 second favourite was there to be shot at on the front end throughout but was able to ward off threats on all sides as Oisin Murphy asked for maximum effort. At the line, the bargain €40,000 Goffs November Foal Sale purchase had half a length to spare over the 5-2 market-leader Miss Amulet, with Umm Kulthum (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) just a further head away having been well beaten by the runner-up in the Lowther. “Andrew [Balding] has done a top job with her, because he’s had to carefully manage her training regime as she’s very generous at home,” Murphy explained. “We’ve a class of horse in the yard at the moment that we’ve never had before. She certainly fits into the 1000 Guineas category for next year, because she hits the line well and also relaxes. She’s a super filly.”

Off the mark over this trip on debut at Newbury Aug. 15, Alcohol Free was only 3/4 of a length behind the vastly-more experienced Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) from a wide draw when second in the Dick Poole also at this distance. Evidently improved in the interim with the money down on the bay who opened up in the betting at 6-1, she showed why by rapidly mastering her pace rival Miss Amulet who had exited the stalls with remarkable alacrity. Soon after the start, Alcohol Free was the one to aim at and despite her relative inexperience was able to remain there ahead of a strong field. Along with the eventual second and third, she also had in her wake her ultra-game Salisbury conqueror, the previously unbeaten G3 Albany S. and G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. winner Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and the high-class Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}).

Balding has had a year to remember and in all reality could have an even better 2021. “She didn’t have a great draw at Salisbury, she showed a bit of inexperience and we knew she would come on for that,” he said. “At the end of the day, Happy Romance was likely to be one of the favourites and we only had a couple of lengths to find on her. We had the option to run in the Rockfel, but Jeff was keen on going for the group one and he was dead right. She has been on a fast-track really, as she only started faster work about three weeks before she ran and we went to the races not knowing quite what to expect as she was the first two-year-old filly we had run. She won very easily there and the next logical step was to go for the Dick Poole and she showed enough there to warrant coming here.”

As far as the 1000 Guineas is concerned, the Kingsclere handler is keeping an open mind. “She should stay, I would have thought,” he opined. “She relaxes well and acts better with a bit of cover. Oisin was intent that he couldn’t see any pace in the race and he didn’t want to be too far back. I’m well past giving him instructions and he did a fantastic job. For the yard, this is fantastic as Jeff has been with us a long time, both with dad and as a big supporter of ours, so it is great to get him a group one winner again. She won’t run again this year. We will see how she does in the spring and we will make a decision nearer the time whether she runs in a Guineas trial. She is obviously good enough to go to the Guineas, so we don’t need to go to a trial to find out–it’s just whether she would benefit for a run in the spring.”

Alcohol Free’s dam Plying (Hard Spun) was a dual winner at slightly further than this trip in the Sheikh Mohammed silks for the Henri-Alex Pantall stable. Initially a $200,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August Yearling purchase, she was let go by Darley for just €12,000 to BBA Ireland at the 2013 Arqana December Sale and five years later was the property of Jossestown Farm for €21,000 at the Goffs November auction. Alcohol Free is her second black-type performer alongside the Listed Prix le Fabuleux winner Alexander James (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), while the second dam is the Listed National S.-placed Nasaieb (Ire) (Fairy King) who produced the G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Princess Margaret S. third Kissing Lights (Ire) Machiavellian). Nasaieb is a half-sister to the G3 Solario S. scorer Raise a Grand (Ire) (Grand Lodge) from the family of the champion Numbered Account (Buckpasser). Plying’s yearling daughter of Starspangledbanner (Aus) was bought by Pegasus Bloodstock for €40,000 at this year’s Goffs February Mixed Sale and is due to sell during Thursday’s session of the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale @ Doncaster. She also has a colt foal by Dandy Man (Ire).

Night Of Thunder Filly Tops Sportsman’s Sale

There was just one offering by Night Of Thunder (Ire) in this year’s Goffs Sportsman’s Sale, and the Castlebridge-consigned filly duly topped the two-day auction with bid of £72,000 from Peter and Ross Doyle. Lot 730 is the fourth foal out of the placed Manduro (Ger) mare Muzhil (Ire), whose 3-year-old Monzoon (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) has become the mare’s first winner since the catalogue was published. Muzhil is a half-sister to Godolphin’s triple group winner Beautiful Romance (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). The filly proved a profitable pinhook, having cost 21,000gns last December.

The highest-priced colt of the session was the Ballyhane-bred and consigned (lot 698), a son of that stud’s resident sire Dandy Man (Ire). He was bought by Mags O’Toole for £50,000 and is out of Little Kipling (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}), a full-sister to Royal Albert Hall (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) who won a listed stake in the U.S. last year.

The relocation of the Sportsman’s Sale to Doncaster this year meant that a significant number of vendors opted to withdraw their yearlings and wait for later opportunities to sell in Ireland. As such just 273 of the 387 offered went through the ring, and 185 were sold for £2,468,900; 98 more were sold last year for an aggregate of £4,320,862. The clearance rate of 67.8% was down from 78.6% last year, while the average and median each dipped 13% to £13,345 and £10,000, respectively. Figures from last year’s sale were converted to sterling for ease of comparison.

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “moving the Sportsman’s Sale to our UK sales complex was not a straightforward decision but, on balance, was deemed the right one in the circumstances. Frankly all of us are in a quandary about what is the right thing to do at the moment especially as things can change from day to day. Indeed, it is worth bearing in mind that the British Prime Minister announced new restrictions to help in the fight against Covid-19 on Tuesday so we are constantly having to react and adapt at short notice. In that connection we are indebted to Doncaster Council with whom we have liaised closely in recent months as they have provided feedback and support as we have drawn up the detailed protocols required to conduct a sale in the current climate.

“We are also very thankful to our vendors who embraced the change of date and location with hardly a murmur and worked with us to stage a sale that has returned a trade of relative strength on both days. Indeed, those yearlings that appealed most drew the normal level of activity from a large group of buyers from the UK, Ireland and those European countries on the UK’s current green list.

“We also want to acknowledge our appreciation to all attendees over the last few days as we are very aware that the protocols in place, whilst very necessary, can be frustrating on occasions. However they have been embraced with a level of acceptance and good humour which is helpful as we strive to do the right thing when no one really knows what that entails.

“Of course the stats do not compare with previous renewals of the Sportsman’s Sale but the key point is liquidity and the ability to trade. In that connection the last two days have delivered although comparing with 12 months ago is made even harder by the fluctuation of sterling in the intervening period so we would suggest that the most revealing figure is the clearance rate.”

Belardo’s Isabella Giles Bounds To Rockfel Triumph

Paul and Clare Rooney’s Isabella Giles (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}) registered a pair of six-furlong wins–at Leicester in June and at Newbury in July–but lost her unbeaten tag when fourth in Ascot’s July 26 G3 Princess Margaret S. before bouncing back to claim a first black-type score for her freshman sire (by Lope de Vega {Ire}) in Goodwood’s Aug. 29 G3 Prestige S. when upped to seven furlongs last time. Aided by a strong tailwind over the same distance in Friday’s G2 Shadwell Rockfel S. at Newmarket, the 11-5 chance continued on an upward trajectory with a decisive two-length defeat of Nazuna (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). Racing second after breaking on the lead, she regained control before halfway and kept on relentlessly under a drive once shaken up at the quarter-mile marker to double her stakes tally in game fashion. Nazuna threatened throughout the final quarter mile, but was unable to strike a late blow. She finished 3 1/4 lengths ahead of Alba Rose (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), while even-money favourite Monday (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) came under pressure far too early for comfort and was 5 1/2 lengths further back in a well-beaten fourth.

“She put up a very classy performance, she’s got a wonderful temperament, she settles into a lovely rhythm and can find her own way in a race,” said winning trainer Clive Cox. “She doesn’t have to lead, but is so relaxed that finding a rhythm and setting your own fractions worked perfectly. Adam [Kirby] got his fractions right and she made a good job of it. I think she is definitely a filly to get a mile next year, which is really exciting, and I’m delighted for Clare and Paul Rooney to have such an exciting possibility as a Classic contender. I’m over the moon.” Looking ahead to possible targets, Cox added, “She is very well balanced, she has won at the track and is a filly that has a little bit of scope. She’s got a wonderful mind and clearly a big level of ability. She is in the [G1] Fillies’ Mile [back at this venue], but she has done pretty good this year. She wouldn’t have blown a candle out there, but we will see how she comes back. It was a ‘Win and You’re In’ race for the Breeders’ Cup, but I’m not sure. Next year beckons over a mile, and I think we will be looking that way.”

Roger Varian, trainer of runner-up Nazuna, expressed delight with his charge and also revealed short-term options. He said, “She is a lovely filly and we were not here just to make up the numbers. I really like her and I’m delighted she has run up to our expectations. Andrea [Atzeni] thinks she will stay a mile and there are lots of nice options. There’s the [G3] Oh So Sharp back here in a couple of weeks or there is the [GI] Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf, which is a race we were second in with Daahyeh last year after winning this.”

Isabella Giles, one of three scorers out of G3 Firth of Clyde S. victress Majestic Dubawi (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), is a half-sister to MSW G3 Goldene Peitsche and G3 Silberne Peitsche placegetter Majestic Colt (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}), a yearling colt by Nathaniel (Ire) and a weanling filly by Fascinating Rock (Ire). Descendants of her third dam South Shore (GB) (Caerleon), herself a winning half-sister to MG1SW sire Soviet Line (Ire) (Soviet Star), include MG1SP G3 Round Tower S. winner Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and G2 Vintage S. and G2 Oettingen-Rennen victor Dark Vision (Ire) (Dream Ahead).

‘Footsteps’ Colt Leads Sportsman’s Opener

The Goffs Sportsman’s Yearling Sale got underway in its temporary new guise in Doncaster on Thursday, with a colt by Footstepsinthesand (GB) (lot 647) from Rockfield Farm topping trade with a bid of £50,000 from Kevin Ryan. He is the second foal out of the winning Danehill Dancer (Ire) mare Harpist (Ire) and his year-older full-brother Star Of Orion (Ire) won on debut at Newmarket in June for Ralph Beckett.

As was the case with the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale earlier this week and as will be the case with Goffs Orby next week, the Sportsman’s sale, typically staged in Kildare, was moved to Britain to maximize buyer attendance. A significant number of Irish-based vendors opted to withdraw their yearlings and instead offer them in the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale in November, and as such just 70% of the yearlings catalogued on Thursday (144) visited the ring, with 99 sold at the close of trade for a clearance rate of 69%. The aggregate was £1,369,000, the average £13,828 and the median £10,000.

There were a handful of notable buybacks during the session, headed by a Lope De Vega (Ire) filly (lot 596) who was led out unsold at £64,000. A Dark Angel (Ire) filly (lot 543) was bought back at £48,000, and the Divine Prophet (Aus) half-sister to Grade I winner River Boyne (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) (lot 560) was taken home at £50,000.

Leading first-crop sire Mehmas (Ire) was predictably popular, and he had a colt and a filly sell for £47,000 and £44,000, respectively. The colt (lot 570) was from Kilmoney Cottage Stud and is a half-sister to the French listed winner Just Sherry (Ire) (Intense Focus), their dam being a half-sister to the G1 2000 Guineas and G1 St James’s Palace S. winner Cockney Rebel (Ire) (Val Royal {Fr}). He was bought by BBA Ireland.

The Mehmas filly (lot 609) was from Grange Hill Stud and was scooped up by trainer Eddie Lynam. She is the third foal out of her dam Faddwa (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}), who is a half-sister to the listed-winning Heart Of Fire (Ire) (Mujadil). Her year-older full-brother Fools Rush In (Ire) is one of 32 winners for Mehmas thus far.

The Goffs Sportsman’s Sale continues with its second and final session from 10 a.m. on Friday.
