Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Under the current lockdown measures in both Ireland and the UK, we do not feel it is prudent to hold a physical sale in this early part of the year and we have therefore selected alternative options that we believe will maximise the potential for vendors and buyers in all sectors.

“Where we feel it may be possible to hold an onsite sale and the category allows, these sales have been rescheduled to later dates and we will communicate any additional updates pending further Government advice.  For breeding stock, particularly in-foal mares, the customer friendly Goffs Online platform, which proved a game changer throughout 2020, will facilitate their sales and international participation on the original dates. Feedback from the Autumn was very positive and clearly demonstrated that the concept works very well for these categories.

“Like everyone, we hope and pray that 2021 sees an end to Covid as vaccinations are rolled out. However, until such a time, we wish to reassure vendors and buyers that Goffs will continue to review our sales dates on an ongoing basis in consultation with our clients, industry bodies and other sales companies. As such we have again liaised with closely with Tattersalls and Arqana to ensure that any changes to our sales are in congruence with their plans. That consultation and planning should allow us to best serve the industry and carry out every sale this year as successfully as circumstances allow.”

Solid Mare Trade at Goffs

KILDARE, Ireland–The final instalment of the rescheduled Goffs November Sale was devoted to breeding stock and again some high end withdrawals robbed the sale of some potential headline makers. Despite this, trade for mares that were deemed commercially desirable was strong with no shortage of suitors for the right types and it was the proven producer Zain Art (Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}) who held sway when selling for €390,000 to Timmy Hyde’s Camas Park Stud.

One feature from Monday’s sale was the healthy 87% clearance rate and this coupled with 11 six figure lots saw the aggregate reach €5,479,600. The sale posted an average of €31,674 and a median price of €14,000.

Taking stock of both this week’s sale and indeed a turbulent sales year, Goffs CEO Henry Beeby said, “2020 has truly been a year like no other and for all the wrong reasons. Indeed, more than anything our overwhelming feeling is one of relief that we have managed to get to the year-end having held our sales, albeit with several on revised dates and, of course, some in different locations. Whilst we recognise that we are better off than so many it has seemed that Irish sales have had to deal with some issues and barriers to trade that others have not had to face. However, with the help of many people and entities we made it.

“Our Foal Sale ended up with a smaller than usual catalogue as understandably some vendors made other plans as, at the time of entry, there was so much uncertainty. Then we were hit with more withdrawals than would normally be the case when the sale had to be delayed. Make no mistake we absolutely respect the decisions people have had to make this year but it meant a contraction in the results we have been able to return especially as several of the absentees had huge sales potential.

“That said trade was remarkably strong for those [foals] that caught the eye culminating in an especially vibrant final day that saw a trio of Frankels sharing top billing at €440,000 when selling to buyers from UK, Japan and Ireland. Not surprisingly last year’s record breaking results were out of reach but it is worth remembering that the 2019 sale outperformed the market and grew by 25% so we have really gone back to 2018 which is not a bad result given the times we are in. In fact the average price is 9% ahead of two years ago and the median static.”

He continued, “Our Breeding Stock catalogue was also much reduced and, again, the reasons are clear. In fact you could ask why anyone would want to be selling a broodmare this year in Christmas week so we have been heartened by the level of interest from what has proved a global audience with the help of Goffs Online. Again last year was particularly good growing by 28% so perspective is needed when analysing the figures which makes the average and median being within 5% especially pleasing.

“So we bid farewell to 2020, a year that no one will look back on too fondly. However there have been some notable moments at Goffs sales on both sides of the Irish Sea, most especially at our NH sales. Within five weeks we recorded two record breaking Point-To-Point prices at hastily arranged sales at Yorton Farm in Wales and sold the legendary Apple’s Jade for an amazing €530,000 in between. Our Land Rover Sale was the first sale in Ireland since the outbreak of Covid, returning better than expected results and set the standard for store sales for the second year in succession. We also launched Goffs Online which has proved a huge asset at traditional sales as well as allowing us to continue to trade during lockdown with two successful purely online live auctions as well as a timed sale of a notable horse in training.

“These are the successes but I confess that our yearling sales proved a massive disappointment, most particularly our flagship Orby Sale which we had to move to the UK this year. I would be deluded if I tried to suggest that it was anything other than very challenging and recognise that we did not perform.

“We were faced with some difficult choices in the midst of the pandemic and got some of them right but undoubtedly made some mistakes. However we cannot change the past but can only state to all our vendors that we will redouble our efforts in 2021 when we all hope and pray that Covid-19, and its massive disruptions, prove to be in the past.

“In closing I want to thank everyone for their understanding and forbearance throughout this terrible time,” added Beeby. “Every vendor has taken a leap of faith with each entry whilst all our purchasers are more valued than ever. I especially want to thank HRI and ITM as they have been so supportive and helpful with endless advice and assistance as we navigated our way through what was allowed and, as importantly, responsible. We have also worked closely with Edmond Mahony and his teams at Tattersalls in UK and Ireland as well as Eric Hoyeau and all at Arqana to ensure we lessened the impact of the inevitable disruptions to the sale calendar.

On this occasion, I also want to pay particular tribute to the entire Goffs team as every one of them, in every department, has offered nothing but support, encouragement and help throughout the year without a hint of complaint as circumstances beyond anyone’s control conspired to make life far from straightforward.

“Indeed this is an amazing industry and I close by saluting every participant for showing an enduring resilience in the face of something that only seemed to get worse. Let’s hope next year sees an end to Covid related problems and a return to what we know. For now we send our best wishes for a safe Christmas that is as merry as possible for everyone.”

Monday’s session topper, lot 892, came to prominence earlier this summer when her 2-year-old daughter Aloha Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) won the G2 Balanchine S. at The Curragh and she proved that was no fluke when running third next time in the G1 Phoenix S. The Fozzy Stack-trained filly was bought soon after that by LNJ Foxwoods and it would be no surprise to see her emerge as a leading G1 Commonwealth Cup contender next year. Zain Art was consigned by Ciara Eglington’s Collegelands Stud on behalf of Cornagher House and is in foal to Highclere stallion Land Force (Ire).

The Aga Khan-bred Sindiyma (Ire) (Kalanisi {Ire}) was a €20,000 purchase in this ring seven years ago by Tony Ashley but having bred the likes of Sikandarabad (Ire) (Dr Fong) and Marie’s Diamond (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) in the interim, the now 13-year-old mare was a very different commodity when returned to Goffs on Monday as lot 922.

Carrying an own sibling to G3 Anglesey S. winner Marie’s Diamond and offered by Airlie Stud, the mare will now swap Kildare for Kilkenny after Ballylinch Stud’s John O’Connor successfully bid €315,000 for her.

“She is a lovely proven mare with a high class pedigree,” O’Connor said afterwards. “She will come back to Ballylinch, we’ll foal her down and the plan is to cover her with Lope De Vega. I love the fact she was able to breed two stakes winners and one from a Giant’s Causeway-line stallion. Hopefully if we breed a few fillies out of her we can start to establish our own successful branch of the family.”

There were some real gems among the Godolphin draft and the second batch that went through the ring on Monday afternoon produced some excellent sales. Chief among these was lot 911, Varamini (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), offered with an Invincible Spirit (Ire) cover. The 4-year-old, who is a full-sister to G2 Prix Sandringham winner Volta (Fr), was bought by Margaret O’Toole for €280,000.

“She is a very good looking mare and she is in foal to a good stallion,” said O’Toole. “It is a current family with plenty going on and she will be staying in Ireland.”

Shortly before this, Airlie Stud went to €160,000 to secure lot 907, Bitter Lake (Halling). The winning half-sister to G1 Fillies’ Mile winner Lyric Of Light (GB) (Street Cry) is in foal to Blue Point (Ire) and has young fillies by Shamardal and Exceed And Excel (Aus) on the ground.

Another significant transaction saw the 16-year-old mare Criticism (GB) (Machiavellian) go the way of the Cantillon’s Tinnakill Bloodstock for €120,000. Lot 900, who was a five time graded stakes winner in America, has already produced the stakes winner Magical Touch (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and was sold in foal to Night Of Thunder (Ire).

The first Godolphin draft wasn’t short of quality either and the first to break six figures was lot 814, Haughtily (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). The half-sister to G1 Coronation S. winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) was unraced, and has yet to breed a winner from two horses of racing age. However such is the depth of her pedigree that it took a bid of €105,000 from Hubie De Burgh to secure the close relative to the brilliant multiple champion Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The 9-year-old is carrying a Ribchester (Ire) foal and is due in the middle of March.

Shortly after this lot 819, the 6-year-old winning mare Light Spirit (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) was purchased by Old Carhue Stud for €70,000. Carrying to Exceed And Excel (Aus), the daughter of G1 Fillies’ Mile winner Lyric Of Light (GB) (Street Cry) has a yearling filly by Exceed And Excel and a Shamardal filly foal working for her.

Hubie De Burgh teamed up with Norelands Stud not long after to purchase lot 844, L’Age D’Or (GB), (Iffraaj {GB}) for €90,000. The half-sister to two stakes winners is in foal to Lanwades Stud stallion Sea The Moon (Ger) who will stand at his highest fee so far in 2021.

Similarly the Aga Khan draft is a fertile source of success, last year’s €110,000 purchase Sonaiyla (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) increased eightfold in value when sold earlier this month and lot 934, a filly by the same sire, was the top priced lot this year from the draft when selling to Ballygallon Stud for €150,000. The 3-year-old Eshtiya (Ire) won a Dundalk maiden in August for Dermot Weld and is a half-sister to the promising Weld trained 2-year-old Erzindjan (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

Meanwhile, lot 862, Opal Heart (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), held the distinction of being the only mare offered for sale in the world this year in foal to Sea The Stars (Ire). The Jockey Hall Stud-consigned 3-year-old daughter of G2 Prix du Royallieu winner Sea Of Heartbreak (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) cost the BBA’s Michael Donohoe €110,000, which isn’t bad value given the stallion enters 2021 with an advertised fee of €150,000.

The Grassicks of Newtown Stud enjoyed a rewarding sale with lot 846, Always Gold (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), when the 5-year-old was knocked down to Rabbah Bloodstock for €105,000. The mare was picked out by Cathy Grassick at Arqana two years ago for €22,000 but a plan to put her back into training had to be aborted when she picked up an injury. Sent to Juddmonte to be covered by Bated Breath (GB), the Grassicks were then fortunate that the mare’s half-brother Chachnak (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) made his mark in two Group 3 contests in the meantime.

“We’re delighted but a bit sad to see her go,” Newtown’s Sally-Anne Grassick said. “There are four of us involved in her and we’ve always loved her but it was a good price and credit to Cathy for buying her originally.”

Deflecting most of the praise back onto the mare herself Cathy Grassick chipped in, “She is a gorgeous mare and I’m delighted Rabbah have bought her as she will be well mated. I’ve always been a big fan of Bated Breath and I thought it was a cross that would suit the mare. As Sally said, we’re sad to see her go as she is such a queen but I look forward to following the progress of her progeny.”

Rabbah later added lot 949 to their broodmare band when paying €160,000 for Second Glance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a 3-year-old in foal to Calyx (GB) from The Castlebridge Consignment.

The first mare to make a decent ripple was lot 796 from Grenane House Stud. The 4-year-old Tracing (Ire), a daughter of Galileo (Ire) and the stakes winner and Classic placed Ishvana (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), landed a Dundalk maiden for Aidan O’Brien on her final run and was knocked down to Kevin Blake for €85,000. The mare was sold in foal to Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and is also a full-sister to the promising Never Forgotten (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was the impressive winner of a Gowran maiden for Joseph O’Brien in July but did not run subsequently.

Blake is building up a strong band of mares and said, “It’s hard enough to get your hands on a young Galileo mare like this, so I’m delighted. She is carrying a colt as well which is a plus and the full-sister Never Forgotten is back in training after a small setback, so hopefully she can give the pedigree a boost next season as she looks quite smart.”

Frankel Foals Head Goffs Market

KILDARE, Ireland–It was a case of saving the best until last as the Goffs November Foal Sale finished with a flourish on Sunday evening. Despite a few high-profile withdrawals, there were still plenty of highly sought after lots on offer and it was three foals by Frankel (GB) who shared the honour of co-top lots with each commanding €440,000. While there may not have been the depth of trade evident in previous editions, the session was underpinned by a solid clearance rate of 82%, with 135 foals sold for a total of €10,374,000. The average for the day was €76,844, while a median price of €52,000 was recorded. There were 47 six-figure transactions on day three last year’s record sale, and 28 on Sunday.

Frankel fever began to set in around mid-afternoon and it was ignited by the sale of the supplementary lot 663A. The brilliant Juddmonte stallion sired Grenadier Guards (Jpn), the winner of the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity in Japan on Sunday morning, and that fact wasn’t lost on Harry Sweeney, who signed the buyer’s docket. The son of the multiple stakes winner Lily’s Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) will make his way to Sweeney’s Paca Paca Farm in Japan where Sweeney hopes he will build on his sire’s impressive record.

“Frankel has been quite successful in Japan; they are big strong horses and they seem to operate well there,” Sweeney said. “I hoped to get this one for slightly less but he is a fine foal and we look forward to getting him home.”

The next Frankel foal that entered the ring brought the exact same price when knocked down to online bidder Blackstar Bloodstock. Lot 673 was consigned by Des Leadon and Mariann Klay’s Swordlestown Little Stud and was bred by Graeng Bloodstock Ltd out of the G3 Brownstown S. winner Marvada (Ire) (Elusive City). The mare has already bred the top class G2 Dahlia S. winner and G1 Queen Anne S. runner up Terebellum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), while Marvada’s 2-year-old Miss Finland (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) broke her maiden recently for John Gosden.

It was an intense half hour for Swordlestown Little as no sooner had the dust settled on lot 673 than they were back in the ring with another Frankel colt, lot 684. This colt was bred by Leadon and Klay out of Nisriyna (Ire) (Intikhab) and completed the Frankel €440,000 trifecta, this time to the bid of Juddmonte’s Barry Mahon. The 13-year-old Nisriyna has been a star for Swordlestown Little and is the dam of the former prolific Hong Kong runner Dinozzo (Ire) (Lilbourne Lad {Ire}), who after amassing over £1.1-million in his racing career was repatriated back to Swordlestown Little to spend an honourable retirement.

“It’s been some rollercoaster,” said Leadon after the second of his headline sales. “We think the world of this Nisriyna colt, he looks a proper racehorse and he really took to this new environment like a duck to water. Nothing seems to faze him. It’s a wonderful family and the mare really deserved an upgrade in the type of stallion she was visiting. We were delighted that her 2-year-old Qaasid (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) recently got off the mark for Sir Michael Stoute, who is a dear friend of ours, and we are thrilled that Juddmonte have bought this foal.”

Barry Mahon had been underbidder on an Expert Eye (GB) foal earlier in the session and was determined not to leave without this one. “Prince Khalid was very keen on this colt and he looks a good fit for the Juddmonte programme,” Mahon said. “He also came from a top farm and was beautifully prepped. Frankel has become a true international sire with the horse in Japan this morning another example of what he can do and it’s great for Irish breeders who have supported him to be rewarded like this.”

In a flurry of Frankel sales, lot 685 rewarded the perseverance of successful buyer Gerard Lowry of Oneliner Stables. Lowry had tried hard to buy the previous lot but was more than happy to come away with this son of Noyelles (Ire) (Docksider) when the hammer dropped at €360,000. Similarly bred to the first Frankel sold being a half-brother to Lily’s Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), this colt was consigned by Neilstown Stud on behalf of the foal’s breeders Nick and Alice Nugent.

“Both Frankels were top of our list so we’re delighted to get this one,” Gerard Lowry said. “Frankel is a global commodity, this horse is a half-brother to two good fillies and he will be back for resale next year.”

There may not have been as much international representation as in previous years at this sale, but that didn’t prevent Goffs Scandinavian agent Filip Zwicky getting stuck in on behalf of clients. His purchases were headed by lot 707, a Footstepsinthesand (GB) half-brother to G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. winner Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) that cost €300,000. Consigned by Baroda Stud, the colt is a grandson of G1 Prix de l’Opera winner Satwa Queen (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}), and while bought for Scandinavian interests he will be making an appearance at Goffs again next year.

“I bought him for the owner of Swedish Derby winner Bullof Wall Street (Tapizar), who we bought in the Orby two years ago,” Zwicky said. “This is the owner’s first pinhook and the horse will come back here for the Orby next year.”

Philipp Stauffenberg is another who is no stranger to paying big money for foals to resell and more often than not the gamble pays off. He struck for lot 659, a No Nay Never full-sister to both GII Mrs Revere S. winner Nay Lady Nay (Ire) and G2 Coventry S. winner Arizona (Ire). The Ballintry Stud-consigned filly set Stauffenberg back €260,000, but with a pedigree that also features two individual champions further down in Bright Generation (Ire) (Rainbow Quest) and Dabirsim (Fr) (Hat Trick {Jpn}), the filly looks well bought. Bred by Stephen Sullivan out of Lady Ederle (English Channel), the sale is the latest success story for the mare that keeps on giving. Sullivan bought the mare in Keeneland eight years ago for $27,000 and is beginning to really reap the rewards from the 11-year-old.

“I’m delighted, Lady Ederle is turning into a real cash cow but all credit to Joe [Rogers] and his team at Ballintry Stud,” Sullivan said. “He looks after the foals so well and I would recommend him to anyone. The mare is in foal to Frankel (GB) and I imagine we’ll see that foal back here hopefully next year. Goffs do a great job and despite everything happening we are here trading horses.”

Lot 583 from The Castlebridge Consignment already had good credentials being an Acclamation (GB) half-brother to two fast stakes horses in K Club (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and Back To Brussels (Ire) (Starspangledbannner {Aus}), but there could be more to come from the family next year particularly from a yearling half-sister by Mehmas (Ire) that cost £330,000 at the Orby Sale in Doncaster and goes into training with Joseph O’Brien. That was surely at the forefront of JC Bloodstock’s Mick Fitzpatrick’s mind as he traded bids with Gay O’Callaghan with Fitzpatrick eventually winning the battle with a bid of €195,000. The foal was bred by Horse Racing Ireland Chairman Nick Hartery out of the mare Big Boned (Street Sense), who has proved a fine investment since being purchased at Goffs in 2014 by Rathasker Stud for €27,000.

Mick Fitzpatrick added to Kilminfoyle’s pinhooking squad for next year when seeing off a parade ring bidder to secure lot 603 for €225,000. The strapping Camelot (GB) colt offered by Oghill House Stud is a full-brother to the very smart Ado McGuinness- trained Current Option (Ire) and Fitzpatrick said, “He is a very nice foal by a proven stallion and is a brother to a good horse so he ticks plenty of boxes.”

For the foal’s breeder Craig English it was a fine return as he only bought the mare Coppertop (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) at this sale last year for €50,000. She was carrying this foal at the time and in the meantime Current Option (Ire) has won a premier handicap at Galway, a listed race at Cork and the G3 Concorde S. at Tipperary, exploits which have seen his rating climb to 107.

Another Camelot (GB) foal to find favour was lot 708. Bred by Kilcarn Stud, the full-sister to stakes winner Fighting Irish (Ire) was bought by Peter and Ross Doyle for €185,000. Camelot’s popularity was again evident when Oaklawn Stud’s filly, lot 735, was bought by Highbank Stud for €190,000.

Former Curragh trainer Takashi Kodama stepped in to purchase lot 649 on behalf of Japan’s Big Red Farm. The Irish National Stud-consigned son of Invincible Spirit (Ire) cost €210,000 and is a half-brother to a pair of stakes winners by Sea The Stars (Ire) in Chemical Charge (Ire) and Dalgarno (Fr), while the early pace was set by a son of Kodiac (GB) bought by the Tally-Ho team for €190,000. Bred by Michael Ryan and consigned by his Dungarvan-based Al Eile Stud, lot 567 is a grandson of Ryan’s brilliant dual 1000 Guineas winner Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr Greely) and out of the winning Galileo mare An Cailin Orga (Ire).

The Goffs November Sale and indeed the reshuffled Irish 2020 sales calendar culminates with the single-session breeding stock sale which begins at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Barberini Lands Goffs Topper

KILDARE, Ireland–Different day, different trade. As expected, business at Goffs on Saturday proved a good bit more lively as pin-hookers and end users alike did battle for some quality foals. Although last year’s corresponding top price of €135,000 was exceeded by a €155,000 Sea The Stars (Ire) filly foal, other sale indicators suggest the market continues to struggle in the face of uncontrollable circumstances. The clearance rate of 79%, while considerably improved from Friday was still a little shy of last year’s 86%. Similarly, the aggregate of €4,855,900, average of €27,907 and median of €20,000 all failed to keep tabs on 2019’s figures, though these numbers are still perfectly respectable in the current grand scheme of things.

Lot 451, the only foal by Sea The Stars catalogued on the day, was bound to attract a lot of interest and, when the filly in question hails from the immediate family of the Gilltown stallion’s brilliant but ill-fated daughter Sea Of Class (Ire), then it was no surprise that agent Federico Barberini was pushed to €155,000 to secure the Oak Lodge & Springfield House Stud consigned foal. The Razza Del Velino bred filly is out of Mooney Ridge (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), a half-sister to G1 Irish Oaks winner Sea Of Class who is already the dam of two stakes performers in Italy.

Barberini, acting for an undisclosed client, said, “She has been bought to race and her page speaks for itself. She has lots of residual value and her 2-year-old half-brother by Australia (GB) is highly regarded.”

A return to a sale ring next year is also not the plan for Lot 354 rather a racing career in Sheikh Hamdan’s silks is in store as the son of Whitsbury Manor Stud stallion Havana Grey (GB) was knocked down to Shadwell’s Stephen Collins for €135,000. The grey colt is a half-brother to Martyn Meade’s quality sprinter Method (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and his yearling half-brother by Belardo (Ire) sold at the Orby Sale in Doncaster for £60,000.

After getting the better of a series of determined bids from Ger Morrin Collins said, “He was our pick of today. He is a very nice colt, forward, mature and athletic with a great attitude. He will go to Derrinstown to be raised and we’ll start to think about where to send him this time next year.”

The sale was a fine return for breeder Michael Phelan of Pipe View Stud in Kilkenny with the foal bred from the inexpensive mare Darsan (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) off an advertised 2019 covering fee of £8,000.

The Mehmas (Ire) factor kicked in with Lot 512 when the Morrin family’s Pier House Stud dug in to acquire the first foal out of unraced Single Thought (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) for €130,000.

It was a huge result for breeder Mick Buckley who consigned the colt foal through his Curragh based Harefield Cottage Stud and who picked up the dam for very small money at Tattersalls in 2018.

“I’m delighted, absolutely over the moon,” said Buckley. “He is a lovely horse and a lot of it is a case of the right sire at the right time. I think I got lucky at Tattersalls when I bought the mare as England were playing in the semi-final of the World Cup when she went through the ring and a lot of people were pre-occupied and I managed to get her for 2,000gns. My luck didn’t end there as when I brought her to Tally-Ho to get covered by Kessaar (Ire), my original choice, he was busy so I had to make do with Mehmas! Lots of luck involved but there can be plenty of bad luck in this game, so I’ll gladly take today’s result. All the right people liked him, he vetted well and I’m delighted he is going to a good home and I hope he is lucky for the Morrins. He’ll be a right bull of a yearling next year and I look forward to seeing him wherever he turns up,” Buckley added.

Coolmore stallion Saxon Warrior (Jpn)’s first foal to be offered at Goffs was certainly well received and Lot 329 was eventually knocked down to MAB Agency and Larry Stratton for €88,000. The Castlebridge consigned bay filly is the first produce out of Cascella (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), who in turn is out of the multiple stakes winner Lily’s Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Another Coolmore sire to have a good day was Australia (GB) and Luke Barry of Manister House Stud will be monitoring the American racing results with interest over the coming months after parting with €80,000 to purchase a son of the Classic stallion from Irish Emerald Stud. Lot 301 is a full-brother to Counterparty Risk (Ire), who broke her maiden last month at Aqueduct for the powerful combination of Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables.

Bigger targets will no doubt await that 3-year-old filly having cost 325,000 gns as a yearling at Tattersalls and this colt’s page, which already features GI Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) could look even better in 10 months’ time. For breeder and vendor Irish Emerald Stud it was a fantastic result having purchased the 11-year-old mare Anklet (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) at Tattersalls 12 months ago carrying this foal for just 18,000gns. While obviously delighted with the price, Gary Duffy, owner of Kildare based Irish Emerald Stud said he wouldn’t have been surprised if the colt had made even more.

“He is a cracking foal and it’s a great pedigree, so I was expecting him to be popular,” said Duffy. “Luckily for me Australia had hit a bit of a flat spot this time last year and the mare was at a bit of a crossroads, so I was able to get her for what is now great value. Australia then had plenty of good success on the track this year and the filly winning in America was also a great help and I believe there are plans to run her in a Grade I. The mare is in foal to Ribchester (Ire) but after today, and with Counterparty Risk, I’d say she’ll have to go back to Australia (GB).”

Baroda Stud also found favour with an Australia colt when selling Lot 504, a half-brother to the stakes-placed American Lady (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) for €72,000 before making an impact as a purchaser when buying lot 530 for €90,000. This colt by Teofilo (Ire) was consigned by Clare Manning’s Boherguy Stud on behalf of her grandfather Jim Bolger and is a full-brother to the smart stakes placed 3-year-old Agitare (Ire).

Friday’s top price was equaled early Saturday morning when the fourth foal into the ring, Lot 291 was bought by BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly for €75,000. By the ever popular Dandy Man (Ire) the Milestream Stud offered colt is the second produce out of the Raven’s Pass mare Zehrah (Ire), who is a half-sister to stakes winner Sameem (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}).

Another Dandy Man (Ire) colt, Lot 380 fetched the same price of €75,000 when selling to Yeomanstown Stud. Offered by Airdreigh Stud the colt is out of Fancy Feathers (Ire) whose five winners to date include the stakes winner Elnadim Star (Ire) (Elnadim). Not long after Joe Foley rowed in to support his own stallion when going to €67,000 to buy J.P Condren’s son of Dandy Man, Lot 428 before yet another Dandy Man colt, Lot 464, out of a winning half-sister to G2 Queen Mary S. winner Elletelle (Ire) (Elnadim) was knocked down to Euro Ventures for €72,000. Rounding off a quintet of high end foals by the super dependable sire lot 491 from Ballinacurra Stud also reached the €72,000 mark when selling, like a previous one by the stallion, to Yeomanstown Stud. That quintet grew to a sextet late in the day when one of the bravest pin-hookers in the business Philip Stauffenberg gave €72,000 for Oak Leaf Stud’s Dandy Man filly (Lot 525) from the family of Quarter Moon (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells).

Some much needed festive cheer will be added to Sunday’s session when well known sales groom Brenda Shortt will don a Mrs. Claus outfit while leading up the final foal in the sale Lot 759, a Dark Angel (Ire) colt offered by the McEnery’s Vinesgrove Stud. Shortt is raising money for mental health in a year that has been understandably tough for so many. To contributions to the worthy cause, click here.
