Fred Darling Success For No Nay Never’s Alcohol Free

Trying a seventh furlong for the first time in Sunday's G3 Fred Darling S. at Newbury, Jeff Smith's G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) had just enough stamina to see it out and deny the dark horse Statement (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) in a bobber. Held out wide halfway down the field under Oisin Murphy, the 9-4 favourite swooped to the front with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and had to battle as the Martyn Meade trainee joined her soon after. Getting her nose down on the line, she had the call by a short head, with Vadream (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}) 2 1/4 lengths away in third. “She's going to give herself every chance of staying in the Guineas,” Murphy commented. “I was very happy with the way she relaxed, as she can be pretty full-on. Top marks, that was a lovely start.”

Trainer Andrew Balding was bullish about Alcohol Free seeing out the extra furlong in Newmarket's May 2 G1 1000 Guineas and said, “She was drawn slightly out on the wing, but I couldn't be happier and to be honest we weren't coming here expecting to win–just hoping she showed nicely. She's been slow to come into her coat and we haven't done an awful lot with her. She settled so well and I can't see a problem with the mile so she'll go to Newmarket. That is very much the plan and today is a bonus.”

Alcohol Free's dam Plying (Hard Spun), who also produced the Listed Prix le Fabuleux-winning miler Alexander James (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), is out of the listed-placed Nasaieb (Ire) (Fairy King) and therefore a half to the G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Princess Margaret S. third Kissing Lights (Ire) Machiavellian). Nasaieb is kin to the G3 Solario S. scorer Raise a Grand (Ire) (Grand Lodge), while this is also the family of the champion juvenile filly Numbered Account (Buckpasser). Plying's 2-year-old filly Hooked On You (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) was a 130,000gns purchase by Creighton Schwartz Bloodstock at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale, while €80,000 was paid by Ballyhane for her yearling colt by Dandy Man (Ire) at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

Mark Richards Joins Goffs as British Agent

Mark Richards, who has fulfilled a variety of roles with the Hong Kong Jockey Club for the past 20 years, has been appointed to the newly created role of British Agent for Goffs, the sales company announced on Monday.

Richards, most recently HKJC Executive Manager of the International Sale, begins on May 1. Originally a National Hunt jockey, Richards has been in the racing industry for 45 years and has contributed to a number of media outlets including the Racing Post, Daily Telegraph, Racing Channel, Sky and TVN. His primary duties for Goffs include attracting new and existing British buyers to sales at Kildare Paddocks with an emphasis on promoting the flagship Goffs Orby, November and Land Rover Sales.

Commenting on the appointment, Goffs Group Chief Executive, Henry Beeby said, “We are delighted to welcome Mark to the Goffs team.  A familiar face at Kildare Paddocks during his time buying for the Hong Kong Jockey Club, he brings a wealth of experience and an extensive list of contacts to the role, while his passion for racing, personable approach and reputation of working to the highest standards ties in perfectly with the Goffs ethos.

“UK buyers represent the largest overseas market for so many of our top tier sales and we look forward to promoting Goffs to new and existing contacts through Mark who further strengthens Goffs' excellent client liaison team and roster of international agents.”

“My experience working with owners, trainers, agents and racing managers across many areas of the racing industry has given me a deep understanding of the needs and requirements of clients attending sales, highlighting the importance for auction houses to offer a professional, transparent and personal service,” said Richards.

“As a regular Orby buyer for many years with the HKJC, I am very aware of the strengths of the sale and have first-hand experience of the famous Kildare welcome and attention to detail. It is an honour to join the Goffs team and I look forward to bringing the company's personal approach and impeccable standards to a wider field of clients in the UK as they attend the major Goffs Flat and National Hunt sales in Ireland.”

Goffs Appoints West As New U.S. Agent

Jacob West has been appointed U.S. agent for Goffs and will commence his new role on April 1.

A Kentucky native, West is one of the rising stars of the American bloodstock world, having started out with top U.S. consignor Taylor Made Sales Agency as a groom in their yearling division and progressing through the ranks to manager. During his time at Taylor Made, he worked under trainer Chad Brown at the Gulfstream Championship Meeting.

West then joined Three Chimneys Farm as director of bloodstock services before taking up his current role as vice president of bloodstock with leading U.S. horse racing partnership, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, the brainchild of Aron Wellman and Brian Spearman. In 2017, he launched his own bloodstock agency, West Bloodstock, which acts for a number of leading U.S. buyers.

Commenting on the appointment, Goffs Group chief executive, Henry Beeby said:

“We are delighted to welcome Jacob to the Goffs Team. Alongside his role at Eclipse, he is the perfect fit for us and comes with the ringing endorsement of several industry leaders. He has a superb reputation for integrity, passion, hard work and a love of the Thoroughbred, all qualities that chime perfectly with the ethos of Goffs. We look forward to working with him as we promote our sales to buyers in the U.S.

“At the same time, we would like to acknowledge the contribution of Gatewood Bell over the last number of years and wish him the very best of luck in his new role with Keeneland.”

West added:

“Goffs has an outstanding reputation for producing top class results year after year. I firmly believe the horses on offer at Goffs have international appeal, and I look forward to bringing as many people as I can over to Ireland to see for themselves. I am delighted to be associated with such a top-level organization as Goffs.”

Jacob's first task for Goffs will be to highlight the quality and value regularly provided at the Goffs Orby Sale, one of Europe's premier yearling sales and source of the likes of recent multiple U.S. Grade 1 winner Raging Bull.
