Time Test Leads Goffs Online Breeding Rights Catalogue

An online sale of three stallion breeding rights, in Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Territories (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus]), was announced by Goffs on Wednesday. Bidding opens on the timed sale after the last mare is sold during the Goffs February Sale on Thursday, Feb. 10, and closes at 12 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11. Entries are still being accepted by Goffs. The leading first-season sire by black-type winners, Time Test has sired the Group 1-placed Sunset Shiraz (Ire) and the Group 3 winners Romantic Time (GB) and Rocchigiani (GB), as well as the listed duo of Tardis (GB) and The King's Horses (GB). He stands for £15,000 at The National Stud this year.

Darley's Territories sired pricy auction purchase Rougir (Fr), who won the G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines last year and also counts the group placed Masseto (GB) and Rhoscolyn (GB) among his progeny. He commands £10,000 at Dalham Hall Stud.

Tops for first-season sires with winners (35) in 2021, Cotai Glory counts G2 Prix Robert Papin winner Atomic Force (Ire) among his best runners. The chestnut, who stands at Tally-Ho Stud for €8,500 this season, also has sired the group placed Pearl Glory (Ire), Eldrickjones (Ire) and the listed winner Purciaretta (Ire).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Goffs Online was first introduced to the market in 2020 and since its inception it has proven a market leading platform. We have used it to aid our live auctions on both sides of the Irish Sea as well as hosting timed online sales which has seen it sell horses up to £300,000.

“We have secured the sale of breeding rights to three very promising young sires which have strong commercial appeal and this online auction enhances the extensive offering at our three-day Goffs February Sale next week. This online sale will open at the conclusion of the final day of breeding stock and if breeders wish to discuss adding any additional breeding rights to the sale, we invite them to contact a member of the Goffs team. This new departure for Goffs only widens our offering and the introduction of the Agents Commission, which was successfully introduced for the online London Sale last summer, should also broaden the sales appeal.”

Jerry McGrath Appointed Goffs UK Bloodstock Manager

Jerry McGrath has been named the new Goffs UK Bloodstock Manager. Formerly a jumps jockey before his career ended in a fall at Lingfield a year ago, he will begin his role on Feb. 7. During his riding days, he was part of Nicky Henderson's Seven Barrows team since 2008, and won over 200 races total, including a pair at the Cheltenham Festival. During the summer months, McGrath worked with Clive Cox and was part of the team that selected Group 1 winner Supremacy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) at the Goffs UK Premier Sale.

Based at a dedicated Goffs office in Lambourn, McGrath will join the Goffs inspection team and attend all Goffs Sales, plus travel to other sales and race meetings across the country to interact with new and existing clients. He will also be part of the team in charge of sourcing entries for all Goffs UK horses-in-training sales, and working closely with point-to-point handlers in the UK and Ireland to continue to grow that sector. Currently a bloodstock agent, he will continue in that role alongside his new appointment.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “Jerry is a very personable individual with a real passion for the bloodstock business and brings a wealth of racing experience and industry connections to Goffs. He has worked closely with the Highflyer team for many years and we would like to thank David Minton for suggesting that we talk to Jerry towards the end of last year as his experience with them, and Clive Cox, ensures that he has a deep knowledge of both codes together with the personality to engage with all Goffs clients.

“We are excited to be working with Jerry, who is the second exciting appointment to our team this year after the announcement that Bernard Condren will also start with Goffs UK on 7 Feb.”

McGrath added, “I am very excited to be starting this new chapter in my life. Throughout my riding career, I've always been interested in the breeding and trading of horses, and I am delighted that I am able make a career out of this passion following a wonderful race riding career where I have worked with some incredible people.

“I will continue to be based in Lambourn where I can utilise the contacts made during my riding career whilst forging new links with key industry figures throughout the UK and Ireland. I have always admired the customer focussed approach and supreme integrity of Goffs, and am looking forward to getting started as part of the team at Goffs UK.”

Shattered Love Anchors Goffs December Day 3

Grade 1 winner Shattered Love (Ire) (Yeats {Ire}) (lot 723) brought a sale-topping €260,000 from MA Bloodstock during Thursday's final session of the Goffs December NH Sale. A winner of the G1 Neville Hotels Fort Leney Novice Chase, the 10-year-old is carrying to Walk in the Park (Ire) and was offered by Gigginstown House Stud.

Another daughter of Yeats from the Gigginstown House draft, Tintangle (Ire) (lot 726), was snapped up by Coolmara Stables in foal to Crystal Ocean (GB). Knocked down for €190,000, the 8-year-old won a listed bumper and was third in the G1 Paddy Power Future Champions Nov. Hurdle.

Gigginstown House also offered the third highest lot of the day-Surin (Fr) (Authorized {Ire}). Newtown Anner/Ballylinch bought the bay for €115,000. Lot 725, a Grade 3 winner over hurdles and Grade 1 placed, visited Poet's Word (Ire) this spring.

From the foal portion of the sale, 408 (68%) sold of 596 offered for a gross of €6,003,800. The average moved up two points to €14,715 and the median was €9,500 (-5%). The entire sale grossed €7,164,300 for 44 sold from 667 offered (66%). The median was unchanged at €10,000 and the average improved to €16,136 (+1%).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “It's always good to break a record but there is special satisfaction in smashing the six-figure glass ceiling in relation to a NH Foal at Goffs. Indeed a top price of €100,000 sits very high on the scoreboard for the category and was another clear demonstration that Goffs December is now competing for market leading status.

“National Hunt Sales at Goffs have made a meteoric rise in recent years and we are so grateful to all those breeders who now choose Goffs as their first choice in increasing numbers. That so many of the best now come to Kildare Paddocks in June and December is testament to our NH team and expanding to a three-day sale this week was simply down to vendor demand which is quite something when one considers this was a one day, 200 lot sale just 10 years ago.

“As ever we are indebted to every vendor for the trust they place in us with each entry and simply delighted to have returned such a vibrant trade to vindicate that faith in the Goffs service. We wish every buyer the very best of luck and look forward to reoffering many of this week's stand outs back at the Goffs Land Rover and Doncaster Spring Sales in 2024.

“It was also very pleasing to round off the sale with another strong selection of classy broodmares and we are especially appreciative of the ongoing support of Michael and Eddie O'Leary who sold another mighty draft of mares under their Gigginstown banner.

“For now we wish all Goffs clients a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year when we hope that the dreaded pandemic will be fully defeated so that we can all focus on the many positives of the this wonderful bloodstock world.”
