Inaugural Goffs Million Attracts 79 Entries At This Stage

The Sept. 24 Goffs Million, the richest 2-year-old race in Europe with a purse of €1 million, has attracted 79 nominations at the latest entry stage. There are 45 colts and 34 fillies entered, with 38 trained in Ireland, an equal number in the UK, two trained in America and one in France at Chantilly. The next forfeit stage is on Tuesday, Sept. 20, before final declarations on Thursday, Sept. 22.

Open exclusively to graduates of the Goffs Orby Sale, one of the most notable entries is the winning Hiawatha (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), last year's top-priced colt out of the sale at €1.2 million for Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore partners. The full-brother to two-time Group 1 winner Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) is joined by G2 July S. hero Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who has been placed twice at the highest level for Amo Racing. Leading the fillies is the Joseph O'Brien-trained seven-furlong maiden winner Zoinnocent (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), who was runner-up in the G3 Silver Flash S. for US owner Eric Long. The 2021 Orby topper, a €1.5-million daughter of Galileo (Ire) and GI Frizette S. heroine Nickname (Scat Daddy), has also been entered. Named Starry Eyed (Ire), she has yet to race for the Coolmore partners.

Other winners entered in the Curragh contest include New Endeavour (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), Beauty Crescent (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), Bossy Parker (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Hellsing (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), Hope You Can Run (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Impact Warrior (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), Ma Belle Artiste (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), Killybegs Warrior (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), Magical Sunset (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Queen Of Ours (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Wahaaj (Ire) (Gregorian {Ire}), All Things Nice (Ire) (Sioux Nation) and Ramazan (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “The introduction of the Goffs Million was a huge hit with buyers at last year's Orby Sale, and the entries are as exciting and packed full of quality as we hoped and we can't wait for the big day in 10 days' time. We are proud to be bringing Europe's richest 2-year-old race to The Curragh and then offering next year's contenders at Kildare Paddocks in the following days. Irish breeders are the best in the world and are sending more of their best to Orby making it truly unmissable for international buyers.”

Freedom Of Speech Makes €140K At The Goffs Champions Sale

Sophomore filly Freedom Of Speech (Ire) (Australia {GB}) (lot 3), a winner at two and third in the G3 Park Express S. this year, sold to Bobby O'Ryan for €140,000 during the Goffs Champions Sale on Saturday. Consigned by Jim Bolger's Glebe House Stables, the daughter of the winning Vocal Nation (Ire) was the only one of four catalogued lots to change hands prior to the start of the Longines Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown. Her third dam is the stakes winner, GI Ladies' H. third and Grade I producer Six Crowns (Secretariat), who foaled American champion juvenile Chief's Crown (Danzig) and dual Grade I winner Classic Crown (Mr. Prospector).

O'Ryan said, “She is a lovely filly who already has black type and therefore has plenty of residual value. She has been bought for a new client and will stay in training in Ireland.”

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “The Goffs Champions Sale is part of our programme of boutique sales and, as such, it provides potential just before one of the great days of Irish racing whilst also adding a bit of theatre to the overall pre-race entertainment on track. Obviously we would have preferred to sell more of the catalogue but we believe that the concept has a future and wish the new connections of Freedom Of Speech the very best of luck.”

Territories’s Hoo Ya Mal Snags Career-High Win At Goodwood

Acquired by connections for £1.2-million at Goffs' London sale in June, former Andrew Balding-trained G1 Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}–Sensationally {GB}, by Montjeu {Ire}) celebrated a first victory in six starts since annexing York's Convivial Maiden last term with an impressive tally for trainer George Boughey in Saturday's G3 William Hill March S., staged in memory of John Dunlop, at Goodwood. The G1 St Leger, G1 Irish St Leger and G1 Melbourne Cup entry tanked forward to track the tempo in second after the initial exchanges of this 14-furlong marathon. Under wraps until shaken up soon after passing the two pole, the 3-10 favourite quickened to the fore approaching the final furlong and lengthened clear of Perfect Alibi (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) to defeat that pacesetting rival by 2 1/2 lengths in impressive fashion. Animato (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) finished 6 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

“The thing we learned was he was stepping up to 14 furlongs, which defies his pedigree,” said George Boughey. “William [Buick] said he's a horse who doesn't feel like he'll stay, but then he does stay. He has that class edge and on ratings he was expected to win, but he didn't do a huge amount today. I just wanted to see him relax and hit the line. It was softer ground and a trip he'd never run over before, so William was delighted and it's good to have ticked a box. It's pretty late at night or early morning in Australia and I'll speak to Gai [Waterhouse] and Adrian [Bott] on the way home. We'll let the dust settle and the [G1 St] Leger is the logical step for him.”

Hoo Ya Mal becomes the second pattern-race winner for his sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the first for Sensationally (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}), who has six scorers from as many runners to her credit. His second dam, G1 Juddmonte International heroine One So Wonderful (GB) (Nashwan), produced GII San Diego H. victor Sun Boat (GB) (Machaivellian) and is also the second dam of the Group 3 victrix Four White Socks (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Hoo Ya Mal's third dam Someone Special (GB) (Habitat), herself kin to G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. heroine Milligram (GB) (Mill Reef), has four black-type winners of her own headed by G2 Dante S.-winning sire Alnasr Alwasheek (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and G3 Rockfel S. victrix Relatively Special (GB) Alzao). Someone Special is out of G1 1000 Guineas heroine One In A Million (Ire) (Rarity {GB}), whose descendants also include the dual Group 1-winning distaffer Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal). Sensationally has an unraced 2-year-old colt by Mukhadram (GB) and a weanling filly by Belardo (Ire) to come.

Roaring Lion Colt Becomes Mark Johnston’s 5,000th Winner

Ahmad Al Shaikh's twice-raced 2-year-old colt Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion–Beach Bunny {Ire}, by High Chaparral {Ire}), a €20,000 Goffs Orby graduate, notched a landmark score for Mark Johnston when making all in Wednesday's British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Novice S. at Kempton. The March-foaled chestnut, who was let go as the 6-5 favourite, became the trainer's 5,000th winner when annexing the one-mile test by an impressive four lengths from 13-8 market rival Super Mo (Uncle Mo).

1st-Kempton, £6,800, Nov, 8-24, 2yo, 8f (AWT), 1:42.35, st/sl.
DUBAI MILE (IRE) (c, 2, Roaring Lion–Beach Bunny {Ire} {SW & G1SP-Ire, $263,884}, by High Chaparral {Ire}), a €20,000 Goffs Orby graduate penalised seven pounds for breaking through in an extended-mile test at Windsor earlier this month, broke sharply and raced on the lead from flagfall here. Scrubbed along to maintain control approaching the final quarter mile, the 6-5 favourite was safely clear passing the eighth pole and kept on powerfully in the closing stages to easily defeat 13-8 market rival Super Mo (Uncle Mo) by an impressive four lengths, becoming trainer Mark Johnston's 5,000th winner. “I liked him a lot when I won on him at Windsor, he was fairly raw and made his own running that day too,” said rider Daniel Muscutt of the G2 Royal Lodge S. entry. “He didn't really engage until horses came to him last time and he put himself in the right position again today. He travelled much smoother through the early part of the race, with a bit of company, and as soon as I gave him the office in the straight he dropped his head to the floor and galloped away. That seems to be a trait of the few Roaring Lions I have ridden. He's a big baby and has plenty of scope and, next year, he'll be a nice 3-year-old over a little bit further. He's got a great action, he's a well-balanced colt and covers a lot of ground. He's a nice horse and, hopefully, he'll keep improving.” Reflecting on his unique achievement, Johnston added, “It's obviously a bit different from breaking the [British] record in 2018, you could say no one has reached 4,194 winners, so it's not as if I'm breaking new ground. It's just another landmark and setting the bar higher for people to try to reach. The main thing is the whole business revolves around winners and a lot of winners means a lot of happy owners and, hopefully, we can continue doing the same thing. The most important thing is Charlie's now getting credit for something that he's been doing for quite some time in the business. It's certainly part of the plan that he will take over at some stage in the relatively near future, but we don't know when that will be.” Dubai Mile is the ninth foal and winner produced by stakes-winning G1 Pretty Polly S. runner-up Beach Bunny (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), herself the leading performer out of an unraced half to G1 1000 Guineas heroine Miss France (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). The March-foaled chestnut is kin to stakes-winning dual Group 3 placegetter Naadirr (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Listed Naas Fillies Sprint victrix Beach Belle (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and a weanling colt by Sottsass (Fr). Beach Belle, in turn, is the dam of Listed King Charles II S. winner Surf Dancer (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). Sales history: €20,000 Ylg '21 GOFOR. Lifetime Record: 3-2-0-0, $9,379.
O-Ahmad Al Shaikh; B-Skymarc Farm (IRE); T-Charlie & Mark Johnston.
