Bo Bromagen: One Of ’50 To 60′ US Agents Active At The Orby

If it's international interest Goffs want, that's exactly what they are going to get, according to Bo Bromagen, who revealed that he will be among the 50 to 60 American-based agents who will add to a power-packed buyers' bench at the Orby Sale this week.

For many of those agents, the trip will represent a maiden voyage, but not Bromagen, who has navigated these waters four times in the past and describes the Orby Sale as one of the first dates he pencils into his diary each year.

Bromagen said, “I have been beating the drum about this sale for years. I know there is a lot of American interest and, between Irish Thoroughbred Marketing and Goffs, they have done an incredible job in promoting the Orby and recruiting buyers.

“I think there is a lot of value to be had at the Orby and, over the past few years, I found horses that really suited what I was trying to do for less money than I thought I would have to give. I feel really confident about the horses I buy and at the prices I have to buy them at.”

He added, “I don't work for ITM or Goffs but I have been telling everyone I know that you can find value at this sale. I would say there are between 50 to 60 American interests coming over this week when, in years past, there would have been about 25 or 30. I don't know if we are going to take over, because the Irish are very strong and there will be other European buyers, but we are going to make a run at it.”

The strength of the dollar at present, paired with the huge recruitment drive run by Goffs and ITM, means that familiar faces like Ben McElroy, Kenny McPeek and Justin Casse, all of whom have made a major impact at the Orby Sale in recent years, will face stiff competition from their fellow countrymen as well as the European and Middle Eastern market.

Despite the added competition, Bromagen is confident that there will still be value on offer at Goffs this week.

He said, “Being an international bloodstock agent gives me the opportunity to attend sales like this around the world and, let me tell you, the Orby Sale is at the top of my list every single year.

“Obviously it depends on the clients that you have, and I know Kenny McPeek went over and spent a million dollars on a Frankel (GB) horse last year. I don't have that budget, but no matter what you are looking for, be that price, distance or pedigree, there is value at all levels. That's the beauty of the Orby Sale.”

Bromagen signed for a Gleneagles filly for €90,000 that was consigned by Eddie O'Leary's Lynn Lodge Stud at last year's sale. He revealed that the juvenile is in training with Rusty Arnold and added that the Irish method in preparing yearlings for the sales is a huge draw.

He said, “We bought a Gleneagles (Ire) filly last year. We tried on a couple more but got out-bid. We're going to try and go a little stronger this year as a result. I love the Gleneagles. She's in training with Rusty Arnold and we're going to try and make her first start up at Keeneland.

“The Keeneland sale has become a commercial monster. There are so many horses in that sale and the majority of them will be looking as well as they ever will in their life. They are show ready. I think at the Orby, a lot of what goes on there is just natural old school horsemanship which translates into the quality product that you see in front of you. You know what you are getting and you can feel good about it.”

On his approach to the sale, he added, “I like to see some speed in the pedigree for the horses I will be bringing back home to America because I think that translates well to our races. That's just my personal preference as, in American turf races, you need that quick-fire turn of pace towards the end of the race. When you're trying to catch up with guys like Chad [Brown], you've got to have something that can kick!”

Along with some partners, Bromagen is hoping to secure up to three yearlings this week and suggested some of the group's acquisitions could stay in training in Ireland, although discussions as to who would train for them have not been had.

He said, “We put together some money as a group and we hope to buy two or three this week. We might even leave one or two over here, re-sell as 2-year-olds or even put them in training, we haven't fully decided.

“We'll see what shakes and I'm excited. We're looking to do some business and expand in this market. If it was up to me, I'd race everything we buy but to stay in this business, you've got to turn a profit every now and again so we'll have to see how it plays out. There are a lot of quality trainers in Ireland.”

According to Bromagen, this week marks the beginning of a busy few weeks for many of the American-based agents, who will also be in attendance at Tattersalls next week.

He explained, “This trip has developed into something of a European tour. There's myself and a group of guys who come over and work the Orby really hard and, after that, we'll go on to France for the Arc.

“We get to be fans of racing for these few weeks and remember what we got into this game for. A lot of guys will be heading to Tattersalls in between, and I'd certainly love to be able to go to as many sales as I can in Europe, but it's just a matter of trying to schedule them all in.”

But when it comes to the Orby, nothing will get in Bromagen's way from attending.

“I've been to the Orby Sale four times now and, if possible, I'm going to keep coming back for the rest of my life. It's so much fun. The horses are the main thing, and you can find some real athletes at a great price, but the people in Ireland make you want to come back every year. It's a sale I put into my calender at the start of every single year and I have been looking forward to this week for such a long time.”

Starspangledbanner Filly Makes All For Curragh Triumph

Joseph O'Brien trainee Basil Martini (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}–Under Offer {Ire}, by Bated Breath {GB}) was a four-start maiden heading into Sunday's G3 Weld Park S. at the Curragh and returned home with black-type and a first win of any kind after making all under Declan McDonogh in the seven-furlong juvenile fillies' heat. The 12-1 chance had collected prizemoney in all outings to date and went postward for this stakes debut coming back off a short-head second at Punchestown earlier in the month. Basil Martini, the sharpest of 10 into stride, dictated at a solid tempo until beyond halfway. Rowed along to maintain her advantage approaching the quarter-mile marker, she refused to yield and was driven out inside the final furlong to hold the closing pack by a half length in game fashion.

“She generally is quick away and leads and it was a really tough performance,” said O'Brien. “Declan [McDonogh] said she really felt good today, she's a progressive filly and has held her form very well all the way through. For the last furlong-and-a-half I was wondering what was going to come and get her, but she just kept finding. I'd say that is probably it for this season, she is a Group winner now and is a nice filly to look forward to next spring.”

Pedigree Notes:

Basil Martini, who becomes the 15th pattern-race scorer for her sire (by Choisir {Aus}), is the first of three foals produced by a daughter of Argentina's G2 Marcos Levalle victrix Bailonguera (Arg) (Southern Halo). She is a half-sister to a yearling filly by Footstepsinthesand (GB) and a weanling filly by Mehmas (Ire). Bailonguera, kin to the G1 De Honor heroine Bonaventura (Arg) (Merce Cunningham), is the dam of three black-type perfomers, headed by Listed Prix Petite Etoile victrix Bayargal (Bernstein), and her descendants also include dual Group 3-winning G1 Steward's Cup second Joyful Trinity (Ire) (Zanzibari) and this term's G3 Prix de Meautry hero Bouttemont (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}). Bailonguera's half-sister Baleares (Arg) (Senor Pete) is the dam of dual Group 1-winning Argentinian champion Batallosa (Arg) (Southern Halo). Basil Martini's Footstepsinthesand half-sister is due to sell as lot 805 at this week's Goffs Sportsman's sale.

Time Test’s Crypto Force Battles To Beresford Triumph

Amo Racing's £900,000 Goffs London graduate Crypto Force (GB) (Time Test {GB}–Luna Mare {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) bounced back from a first reversal, when seventh in Royal Ascot's June 18 Listed Chesham S., to loosen Aidan O'Brien's stranglehold on Saturday's G2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford S. over one mile at the Curragh. He had earlier accounted for subsequent 'TDN Rising Star' and G2 Golden Fleece S. victor Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in his June 1 debut over seven furlongs here and employed patient tactics at the tail of the five-strong field through halfway. Making smooth headway in the straight to go second passing the quarter-mile marker, the 15-2 chance hit the front with 150 yards remaining and drew clear under a drive to subdue Ballydoyle's 4-7 favourite Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) by 2 1/4 lengths for a first stakes rosette. Jim Bolger's Young Ireland (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) finished four lengths further adrift in third.

“I'm delighted for Kia Joorabchian and Amo Racing, because Kia's been a big supporter of mine this year and has let me go away to the breeze-ups and buy some nice horses,” said Michael O'Callaghan. “I bought this lad myself and when he won his maiden I told Kia he was going to the London Sale. He didn't force me to sell the horse to him at home, I brought him to the sale and he paid a lot of money for him. The pressure was very much on me from that point on and it was a massive kick in the guts at [Royal] Ascot. It wasn't to be, he just needed that bit more time and Kia has been very patient. I thought he wanted a mile-and-a-quarter, looking at his homework, and that's why I was happy to see a bit of rain to make the mile a test. He'll be better on fast ground and could make up into a Guineas horse over the winter, but we won't get carried away with ourselves yet. He won that very well, so I'll go back and sit down and talk to Kia. It would be nice to just put him away and train him with next year in mind.”

Crypto Force, who becomes the third group-race winner for his second-crop sire (by Dubawi {Ire}), is full to a yearling colt out of a winning full-sister to the dam of dual stakes-winning G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil third Jeri (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}). Crypto Force's third dam is Listed Oaks Trial victrix Baraka (Ire) (Danehill), from the family of G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero Youmzain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) and G1 Lockinge S. victor Creachadoir (Ire) (King's Best), is a full-sister to Japanese champion Fine Motion (Ire) and kin to multiple Group 1-winning sire Pilsudski (Ire) (Polish Precedent).

Beeby: ‘Orby Is The One That Matters Most’

Tasked with identifying just one horse to look forward at the Orby Sale next week, Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby must have realised that he was in clover when rattling off progeny by sire sensations Dubawi (Ire), Frankel (GB) and Sea The Stars (Ire) but admitted that having the chance to offer 11 Galileos (Ire) was a particular boon ahead one of the most eagerly-anticipated yearling sales on earth.

Beeby also described himself as thrilled with the field of 2-year-olds the Goffs Million has attracted at the Curragh on Saturday and shared hopes that the race can prove a springboard for what promises to be a helter-skelter week of trading.

He said, “Having 11 Galileos in his penultimate crop is a big deal for us. Kirsten Rausing's Dubawi is gorgeous and there are some lovely yearlings by Sea The Stars as well. We've got Frankels, Kingmans (GB), Invincible Spirits (Ire), Night Of Thunders (Ire), Dark Angels (Ire), Kodiacs (GB), Siyounis (Fr)–everything you could possibly want.

“We have some really good sire profiles and deep, deep pedigrees. The brother of Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), I saw him back in May and my tongue was hanging out, he's such a good-looking horse.”

There are also siblings to top-notchers Champers Elysees (Ire), Pretty Gorgeous (Fr), Chanel (Ire), Homeless Songs (Ire), Mother Earth (Ire), Sonnyboyliston (Ire), Blackbeard (Ire) and many more in the sale.

Beeby added, “There are a couple of superb No Nay Nevers and the Frankels I've seen have been gorgeous as well. I've been to the Irish National Stud and I think they have a very strong draft but it's very hard to just pick out one or two horses off the top of my head because all of the big vendors have supported us well. Put it this way, everything is in place for it to be a big sale.”

Before the two-day Orby kicks off on Tuesday, there is the Goffs Million, which will be run for the first time since 2009 on Saturday and boasts a whopping €1,234,000 prize fund. Beeby has described his satisfaction with the field of 19 runners that have assembled for Saturday's seven-furlong contest and explained the reasons behind rescheduling the race.

He said, “We're delighted with the field because it has a good representation from England and Ireland which demonstrates the interest of the sale. It looks a good race with good 2-year-olds who will go on to bigger and better things. What the race has provided is a focal point. We had a rough old time of it two years ago and, when we were thinking about the sale last year, we decided we needed something that would really grab peoples' attention.

“We looked at all sorts of things, incentives and bonuses, all of which have merit, but we just felt that the Goffs Million had a real ring to it. There are 19 runners, 10 of them will get prize-money and the winner will get €617,000 as the race is worth €1,234,000 because any excess entry fee rolled straight back into the race. It's very exciting and really caught the imagination at the sale last year–which can be seen by the diversity of the trainer and owner profile of the race.”

Beeby added, “Two years ago was very hard. We have been very clear about the fact that we could have made better decisions in 2020. We have essentially appealed to Irish breeders to give us another chance and happily they did. They were quite heavily rewarded last year and, one of the key things I will always say is, we are nothing without the horses.

“We can come up with as many gimmicks or marketing campaigns as we like but, if you haven't got the raw material–which is the quality Irish thoroughbred–then you have nothing.

“As a result of the great support we got last year, we saw great trade and, because of that, the Irish breeders have given us a greater share of their best horses for this year's sale.

“Many vendors have upped their game. We have a bigger catalogue than ever and the build-up to this sale has been all about convincing the Irish breeders that they have a premier outlet in Goffs and that they don't need to go elsewhere. More and more people are happily coming around to that way of thinking.”

There is no better advertisement for a sales company than the racecourse and the Orby was once again put in lights when Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) stormed to St Leger glory at Doncaster.

Fellow graduate Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), winner of the G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket, has also done her bit to advertise the prowess of the sale and Beeby is all too aware that such victories are needed to maintain the Orby's reputation as a guaranteed source of top-notch talent.

He said, “People come back to the Orby Sale to buy good-looking and well-bred individuals who perform on the racetrack. Eldar Eldarov and Prosperous Voyage are obviously the most high-profile graduates this season but they are pumped out every year. The sale punches above its weight in that respect. We call it the Irish national yearling sale, because that's what it is, but it is a premier European yearling sale. It's one of the most important dates in the year, certainly in Europe, if not in the northern hemisphere breeding season. It will have the full focus of attention and we expect a pretty big buying bench to turn up.

“That's certainly the indication at the moment as hotel rooms are at a premium and we're flying people in from the United States. We have interest from the Middle East, the Far East, obviously from Ireland, Britain and Europe, so we are prepared for a really big turnout.”

And that American interest should not be underestimated. Given the strength of the dollar, it is understood that up to 60 American-based agents and buyers could be in attendance at the Orby Sale next week, which would be a record.

Add that to the fact that the demand for yearlings has been strong at the the August Sale at Arqana, the Premier Yearling Sale at Goffs UK, the Tattersalls Somerville Sale and at Tattersalls Ireland last week, Beeby is quietly optimistic of the trend continuing at Goffs.

He said, “The yearling sales have been extraordinary this year. We would be hopeful of a good trade. The American interest is higher than it has ever been, exactly what number turns up remains to be seen but the dollar being where it is a major attraction. They are looking for our kind of horses and we've got them in droves.”

Beeby added, “I've seen a lot of these horses and I would be surprised if buyers are not very impressed. For our sale, we need to have the pedigree and the conformation because there's plenty of good yearlings to come in the following weeks, and that's always been the case, so you really have to be the right article to get into the Orby.”

And with all of this excitement comes great responsibility. Beeby admits there will be butterflies in the stomach when he stands up on that rostrum at 10am on Tuesday morning for a sale that broke the €40-million mark 12 months ago but everything is in place for another record-breaking session.

He said, “From a Goffs point of view, this is the most important week of our year because the two days of the Orby Sale are our highest-grossing sales by some way. Any sale that I go to, and I mean this genuinely, I care deeply about it and want it to go well.

“For example, the Premier Sale means a lot to me and I have been working at that sale since the late 1970s, but the Orby is the one that matters most. As my late father used to say, the yearling sales are all about potential and you can see in front of you what the horse is going to look at–it's like looking at a late teenager in human terms. You can see the athlete.”

Beeby added, “The overriding emotion is anticipation, excitement and there is a certain amount of adrenaline flowing. When I get up on that rostrum, I will feel some nerves, but I think you need that. If you're an auctioneer, the whole point of doing this job is the moments leading up to when a horse walks into the ring, everything else leads towards that moment. So, stepping forward with a microphone on you, the gavel in your hand and seeing a beautifully-bred horse from a major operation with a track record of selling top-class horses walking around a ring that has seen champion after champion, that's what I live for. I just love it and I can't wait for next week.”
