Freshman Sire Washington DC Off The Mark At Carlisle

Washington DC (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) became the latest European freshman sire off the mark when the Kevin Ryan-trained 2-year-old gelding Washington Heights (GB) notched a first winner for the Bearstone Stud resident in Wednesday's Scaleby Restricted Maiden S. over five furlongs at Carlisle.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS (GB) (g, 2, Washington DC {Ire}–Epping Rose {Ire}, by Kodiac {GB}), who ran fourth in his June 7 debut at Wetherby last time, broke smartly to lead from the outset here. Holding sway throughout, the 4-1 third choice came under pressure when threatened at the quarter-mile marker and was ridden out inside the final furlong to hold the late thrust of Armour Propre (Ire) (Proftable {Ire}) by a head, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by Zoffany {Ire}). Washington Heights, half to a yearling filly by Aclaim (Ire), is the second of three foals and lone performer produced by an unraced full-sister to G3 Amethyst S. runner-up Confidence High (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). The March-foaled bay's dam is also a half-sister to G1 St Leger second The Last Drop (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Listed Vintage Crop S. runner-up Nebula Storm (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Ardad’s Perfect Power Takes The Commonwealth Cup

Confirming his position as the chief three-year-old sprinting colt, Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) came out on top in a highly-competitive G1 Commonwealth Cup on Friday. Successful in the G2 Norfolk S. at last year's meeting, the subsequent G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. winner had been seventh in the 2000 Guineas following his success in Newbury's seven-furlong G3 Greenham S. Apr. 16 and started as the 7-2 joint-favourite back sprinting. Settled halfway down the field initially by Christophe Soumillon racing far side, the Richard Fahey-trained bay gave his familiar surge to take over from TDN Rising Star Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) passing the furlong pole and win by 1 1/4 lengths from Flaming Rib (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) who denied Flotus by half a length.

Tasleet’s Bradsell Best In The Coventry

Becoming the first of the TDN Rising Stars to emerge successful at Royal Ascot in 2022, Victorious Racing Limited's Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}–Russian Punch {GB}, by Archipenko) conquered a host of talent to win the G2 Coventry S. under Hollie Doyle. Keen initially from her draw in the centre, the Archie Watson-trained £47,000 Goffs UK Breeze-Up graduate tracked Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) to two out and after taking over soon after forged away for a 1 1/2-length verdict over Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who edged Royal Scotsman by a neck for second.

Record Turnover Reached at Doncaster Spring HIT/PTP Sale

Demand for horses-in-training and point-to-pointers was strong at Goffs UK's Doncaster complex on Wednesday, which reached record turnover of £5,085,700 during the first session. Of the 180 lots through the ring, 162 sold for a 90% clearance rate. The average was £31,393 (-1.1%) just down on 2021 and the median was marginally lower at 4% (£22,000).

Leading the way among the pointers and bumper horses that made up the majority of the first session was Porthill (Ire) (Flemensfirth), who brought £250,000 from the buying duo of H. Kirk and Willie Mullins. Consigned by Colin McKeever's Loughanmore Farms, the 4-year-old gelding (lot 420) placed second on debut and is from the family of Grade 1 winner Relegate (Ire) (Flemensfirth).

Of the other six lots to make six figures, the placed Passing Well (Fr) (Coastal Path {GB}) (lot 465) was next at £185,000. From the Leighmoney Stables draft, the gelding caught the eye of Tom Malone and Jamie Snowden.

Rounding out the top three was lot 431, Myretown (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}). Another consigned by Leighmoney Stables, the winning point-to-pointer and half-brother to Grade 3-placed hurdler A Fine Young Man (Ire) (Snurge) was purchased for £135,000 by Tom Malone and Lucinda Russell.

The second and final day of the Doncaster Spring HIT/PTP Sale will begin at 10 a.m. and feature the Million In Mind Dispersal.
