Bated Breath’s Cairn Gorm Takes the Cabourg

Unbeaten entering Sunday’s G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg, Cairn Gorm (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) kept his tally secure with a battling effort in the Deauville sunshine. Helped by the fact that his compatriot and the 11-10 market-leader Mighty Gurkha (Ire) (Sepoy {Aus}) was left at the start, the chestnut who was carrying the Hunscote Stud colours tracked the pace and was perfectly positioned before hitting the front passing the furlong pole. Asserting from there under Tom Marquand, the 17-5 second favourite scored by a length from Jubilation (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), with a head back to Prince Lancelot (GB) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) in third. “He’s a very nice horse and the ground was quick enough for him today, so he was a little bit hesitant early on,” the winning rider commented. “When he found his stride, he really went and is still undefeated. Whether he’s good enough for a higher level or not you’d only know when you tried.”

This was an inspired piece of placing by connections, with Cairn Gorm having previous won on debut at Windsor June 22 and when under a subsequent penalty at Newbury July 8. Trainer Mick Channon said, “We thought he was a nice horse, but he had to step up today and he has. He’s won a group three going away, so we’ll have to think about taking him back here for the [G1] Prix Morny later in the month.”

Cairn Gorm is out of In Your Time (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who is a three-parts sister to the G3 Musidora S. winner Time Away (Ire) by Dalakhani’s sire Darshaan (GB). Her own descendants are headed by the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Cursory Glance (Distorted Humor), while she is kin to the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Time Ahead (GB) (Spectrum {Ire}) and the listed-placed Moment of Time (GB) (Rainbow Quest). She is in turn the dam of the G2 Crystal Mile scorer Chief Ironside (GB) (Lawman {Fr}). The third dam is the four-times group 1-winning champion Time Charter (Ire) (Saritamer) who was also responsible for the G2 Jockey Club S.-winning pair Time Allowed (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) and Zinaad (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). In Your Time’s yearling colt is by Havana Gold (Ire).

Grand Finale To Summer Sale

The third and final session of Goffs UK’s Summer Sale on Wednesday provided the sale’s highlight when The Million In Mind Partnership’s unbeaten hurdler Grand Roi (Fr) (Spanish Moon) (lot 318) fetched £400,000 from Aidan O’Ryan and trainer Gordon Elliott. The pricetag is the second-highest ever achieved from the annual Million In Mind reduction.

Another pair of horses in training shared the day’s second-highest price of £82,000: Fabrique En France (Fr) (Yeats {Ire}) (lot 340A), who was supplemented off a point-to-point second at Ballycahane on July 3 and bought by Olly Murphy and Aiden Murphy; and Sky Pirate (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB}) (lot 448), a two-time winner over hurdles bought by Wasdell Group.

From 186 horses offered on the day, 158 (85%) were sold for an aggregate of £2,369,850. The average was £14,999 and the median £7,000.

Commenting on the day’s trade and the Summer Sale as a whole, Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “The three-day Summer Sale has been a success from start to finish and today’s trade has been no different. This unique sale was similar in format to our traditional Spring Sale and managed to attract a diverse buying bench that was prepared to spend at all levels of the market either in person, on the phone or online. It is this varied selection of horses that helps to attract these buyers each year and I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all vendors, of stores and horses in training, who have supported us during these unprecedented times and helped Goffs to conduct a very successful sale under a unique set of challenges.”

A’Ali Bags the Sapphire

Forced to race on his own in Sunday’s G2 Holden Plant Rentals Sapphire S. at The Curragh, Shaikh Duaij Al Khalifa’s burgeoning sprinting star A’Ali (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}) was admirably uncomplicated as he secured a fifth pattern-race success. Coming here on the back of a first 3-year-old success in a competitive renewal of the July 5 G3 Sandown Sprint S., the even-money favourite was detached from the main field early and out on a limb but was fortunately able to benefit from the guile and confidence of Colin Keane. Ploughing a lone furrow as Make a Challenge (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) dominated the majority of the runners on the far side, he stayed straight and true to reel in that rival in the last 75 yards for a length success, with the outsider Rapid Reaction (Ire) (Shamardal) clinging on for a valuable placing 1 3/4 lengths behind. “He’s a very speedy horse,” Keane commented. “I thought at one stage that I was in trouble. It wasn’t by design that I was away from the main group and it would have been better to get a tow into the race, but I felt I was on a fresh strip of ground. He’s very straightforward and feels like a group 1 horse.”

A’Ali, who has now won this and the G2 Norfolk S., G2 Prix Robert Papin and G2 Flying Childers S. as well as the G3 Sprint S., was like the juvenile Frenetic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) emerging from the day as a likely thorn in the side of the established speed monarch Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G1 Nunthorpe S. His dam Motion Lass (GB) (Motivator {GB}) is a half-sister to the G3 Darley S. winner and G1 Coronation Cup-placed Enforcer (GB) (Efisio {GB}). The third dam is the GIII Tempted S. scorer Willowy Mood (Will Win), who is related to the triple grade III winner OK By Me (With Approval) and the GIII Royal Palm H. winner D J’s Rainbow (Tom Rolfe) and the triple grade I hero Sea Cadet (Bolger). Motion Lass’s yearling filly is by Cotai Glory (GB).

Store Sales Dates Coordinated Between Goffs and Tattersalls

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, Goffs and Tattersalls have revised the store sales dates to allow sufficient time for vendors to quarantine between the Goffs UK Summer Sale and the Irish Store sales at Goffs and Tattersalls Ireland in compliance with Irish Government quarantine requirements. A two week gap between sales in the UK and Ireland has been agreed to give adequate time for Irish vendors to return from England and quarantine before they head to Kildare for the Goffs Land Rover Sale and then to the Tattersalls Ireland Derby and May Sales at Fairyhouse. The new dates are as follows:

  • Goffs UK Summer Sale in Doncaster–July 27 to 29th
  • Goffs Land Rover Sale in Kildare–Aug. 12 to 13th
  • Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale in Fairyhouse -Aug. 18 to 19th
  • Tattersalls Ireland May Sale in Fairyhouse-Aug. 20th
  • Tattersalls Ireland August NH Sale in Fairyhouse-Aug. 27 to 28th

“The bloodstock community, like the rest of the world, is having to adapt and react quickly to an ever evolving situation caused by this awful pandemic,” Tattersalls Chariman Edmond Mahony and Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said in a joint statement. “However, we have come together to make these changes to assist the vendors who have entries in more than one Goffs and Tattersalls catalogue, and need to attend several locations. Both companies are mindful of current government directives and have developed detailed protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees at each sales venue.”

A small number of entries from the Derby and Land Rover Sales will be allowed at the Goffs UK Summer Sale in a joint supplementary catalogue, although confined to UK domiciled stores from either catalogue.
