Goffs UK August Sale Catalogues 148

A total of 148 lots consisting of horses-in-training, stores, NH mares and young stock have been catalogued for the Goffs UK August Sale, set to be held on Aug. 9 at Doncaster beginning at 10 a.m.

This year's sale will host two partial dispersals from owners Mike and Eileen Newbould and Gigginstown House Stud. The Newboulds are selling 13 head, including dual Grade 2 winner Third Time Lucki (Ire) (Arcadia {Ger}) (lot 85) and three-time winner West Cork (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB}) (lot 84), who finished second in the G2 Scottish Champion Hurdle. Gigginstown House will offer seven horses-in-training, including Grade 3 winner Highland Change (Ire) (Fame and Glory {GB}), who won a Class 2 Hurdle in his most recent start and will sell as lot 79, and Grade 2-placed Decimation (Ire) (Milan {GB}) (lot 51).

“The August Sale follows on from our largest UK NH sale of the year, the Spring Sale, and hosts our second of four UK store sessions in 2023, the final two being the 2-year-old store sessions in the September and Yorton Sales,” Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said. “We would like to extend our thanks to Mike and Eileen Newbould who will host a partial dispersal of their racing interests which is headed by the dual Grade 2 winner Third Time Lucki. Along with the Gigginstown House Stud partial dispersal, an annual draft at Doncaster HIT Sales which has produced many highlights over the years, there are plenty of lots to capture the attention of buyers.”

Jerry McGrath Appointed Goffs UK Bloodstock Manager

Jerry McGrath has been named the new Goffs UK Bloodstock Manager. Formerly a jumps jockey before his career ended in a fall at Lingfield a year ago, he will begin his role on Feb. 7. During his riding days, he was part of Nicky Henderson's Seven Barrows team since 2008, and won over 200 races total, including a pair at the Cheltenham Festival. During the summer months, McGrath worked with Clive Cox and was part of the team that selected Group 1 winner Supremacy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) at the Goffs UK Premier Sale.

Based at a dedicated Goffs office in Lambourn, McGrath will join the Goffs inspection team and attend all Goffs Sales, plus travel to other sales and race meetings across the country to interact with new and existing clients. He will also be part of the team in charge of sourcing entries for all Goffs UK horses-in-training sales, and working closely with point-to-point handlers in the UK and Ireland to continue to grow that sector. Currently a bloodstock agent, he will continue in that role alongside his new appointment.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “Jerry is a very personable individual with a real passion for the bloodstock business and brings a wealth of racing experience and industry connections to Goffs. He has worked closely with the Highflyer team for many years and we would like to thank David Minton for suggesting that we talk to Jerry towards the end of last year as his experience with them, and Clive Cox, ensures that he has a deep knowledge of both codes together with the personality to engage with all Goffs clients.

“We are excited to be working with Jerry, who is the second exciting appointment to our team this year after the announcement that Bernard Condren will also start with Goffs UK on 7 Feb.”

McGrath added, “I am very excited to be starting this new chapter in my life. Throughout my riding career, I've always been interested in the breeding and trading of horses, and I am delighted that I am able make a career out of this passion following a wonderful race riding career where I have worked with some incredible people.

“I will continue to be based in Lambourn where I can utilise the contacts made during my riding career whilst forging new links with key industry figures throughout the UK and Ireland. I have always admired the customer focussed approach and supreme integrity of Goffs, and am looking forward to getting started as part of the team at Goffs UK.”

Condren Appointed Goffs UK Head of Sales

Bernard Condren has been appointed to Head of Sales of Goffs UK and will join the company beginning Feb. 7. Bernard, who began bid spotting at Goffs in 2000, made his debut as an auctioneer at Goffs in 2006. Previously, Bernard spent 11 years with Racing TV.

“Bernard will continue to be on the rostrum at all Goffs sales whilst also becoming a full-time auctioneer at the Goffs UK's sales in Doncaster, Aintree and Yorton,” Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent commented. “His role will also see him join the Goffs inspection team and liaise with Goffs' agents to attract entries to the Group's sales across both codes.”

Condren added, “A key part of my role with Goffs will be Point-to-Point sales and I am looking forward to working closely with our agents Derek O'Connor, Michael Moore and Caroline Kenneally as we continue to grow our P2P and NH sales.”

Strong Demand For Stores at Doncaster

Buyers were out in force during the first day of the Goffs UK Spring Sale at Doncaster, which resulted in record trade across the board at the end of the first of two days of selling NH stores.

A gelded son of Kayf Tara (GB) (lot 101) drew the highest price of £165,000 when knocked down to the duo of Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls. Consigned by Lulham Bloodstock, the bay is a son of Gaye Sophie (GB) (Environment Friend {GB}), already the dam of Grade 2 hurdler Silver Hallmark (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}) and listed hurdler Gayebury (GB) (Overbury {Ire}), who has also placed second at Grade 2 level.

Malone and Nicholls also snapped up the second highest price on Monday, lot 77, a gelded son of Mount Nelson (GB) from Brown Island Stables for £150,000. He is a half to the Grade 2-winning and Grade 1-placed Charbel (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). Park Farm's Shantou gelding (lot 78) also caught their eye at £78,000. Their final acquisition on Monday was lot 91, a gelding by Kapgarde (Fr) from RH Bloodstock.

Of the 138 offered, 112 (81%) sold with an aggregate of £3,579,500. The average and median both increased sharply when preliminarily compared with the one-day sale in 2019–£31,960 (+21%) for the average and the median was £28,000 (33%). Final comparisons will be made after Tuesday's session.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent commented on Monday's buoyant trade, “The Goffs UK Spring Sale has been billed as the first and last word in British NH sales which makes it particularly gratifying to have achieved a top price of £165,000 with a British-bred horse, by the champion British-based NH sire, offered by a relatively new British based vendor and sold to the champion British NH trainer, with another leading British based NH trainer acting as underbidder.

“Today has been a great start to the annual Spring Sale and we have achieved some vibrant results at all levels of the market. We look forward to more of the same tomorrow when we continue with the second session of NH stores before two days of Horses in Training and Pointers on Wednesday and Thursday.”

Due to unprecedented demand this year, the sale continues on Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. Later this week, the Goffs UK Spring HIT/P2P Sale begins it's two-day run on May 19, also at 11 a.m.
