Grand Prix the Feature in Deauville Farewell

Deauville August comes to a close on Sunday, with the focus being the grand old monument of the meeting, the G2 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville.

In keeping with much of the festival's feature races, there is a significant overseas presence in the 12 1/2-furlong contest with Shadai's Mar. 26 G2 Dubai Gold Cup winner Stay Foolish (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) looking to hold a class edge over the domestic runners. More importantly, the Arc entry will provide some kind of guide to the prospects of Japan's leading contender for the ParisLongchamp showcase Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}), having been ninth behind his compatriot in the June 26 G1 Takarazuka Kinen.

With a record nine renewals under his name, Andre Fabre is the man here and his go-quietly approach to the career of Godolphin's Botanik (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) has already paid off with the homebred edging out last year's Grand Prix de Deauville winner Glycon (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) in the course-and-distance G3 Prix de Reux Aug. 7.

Of the day's four other pattern races, Baden-Baden stages the key one with the G3 Casino Baden-Baden Goldene Peitsche seeing 'TDN Rising Star' Dubawi Legend (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) take on the home-trained sprinters.

Cody’s Wish Runs Down Jackie’s Warrior in Forego

Previously unbeaten at Saratoga and for the season, champion Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) became the latest victim of the “Graveyard of Champions” Saturday when run down late by the ever-improving Cody's Wish (Curlin).

The 1-9 favorite hustled up to dictate terms and was pressed by longshot Pipeline (Speightstown) through a :22.75 opening quarter and :45.10 half-mile while 8-1 shot Cody's Wish raced in a joint last. Jackie's Warrior turned for home in front with a stubborn Pipeline breathing down his neck and Cody's Wish winding up out in the center of the track. Jackie's Warrior shook loose as three quarters went up in 1:08.76 and appeared home free. However, Cody's Wish was just hitting his best stride and swept by the favorite just a few steps from the wire to spring the upset by 1 1/4 lengths. Pipeline held on for third.

“I really thought the style of this race would suit this horse. I was glad to see somebody going with [Jackie's Warrior], for sure,” said winning trainer Bill Mott, who also trained fourth-place finisher Baby Yoda (Prospective). “I didn't think it was going to be either of mine. I thought both of ours were going to settle back. I didn't know whether we were going to be laying second, third or fourth, and actually Cody's Wish was back a little further. I thought he'd be a little closer to the pace early, but as it turned out it was good that somebody entertained Jackie's Warrior a little bit. When he cut the corner at the three-eighths pole, I saw him moving. I know when he starts moving, he keeps moving.”

“When we turned for home and I saw Jackie's Warrior didn't take off, at that point we're taking a good shot at it, and right by the eighth pole I had a good feeling at that point,” said winning rider Junior Alvarado. “I still never underestimated Jackie's Warrior, but by the eighth-pole I definitely was all out and I knew it was going to happen today.”

Graduating at fourth asking at Churchill in October, Cody's Wish followed suit with a pair of allowance wins beneath the Twin Spires in November. Missing by a neck in Tampa's GIII Challenger S. Mar. 12, the homebred romped in Belmont's GIII Westchester S. in the slop May 7, running a 104 Beyer Speed Figure. He entered this off a win in Churchill's Hanshin S. July 4.

Pedigree Notes:

Cody's Wish is the 19th Grade I winner for his legendary sire Curlin. Sheikh Mohammed's operation purchased the winner's Grade I-winning dam Dance Card for $750,000 as a 2-year-old at the FTKFEB sale. All three of her foals to race are black-type runners with the other two being MGSP Endorsed (Medaglia d'Oro) and SP Bocephus (Medaglia d'Oro). Her recent produce includes a yearling colt by Into Mischief and a 2022 filly by Street Sense. The 13-year-old mare was bred back to Gun Runner.

Dubawi’s Fairy Cross Makes All For Prestige Triumph

Goldophin's homebred 2-year-old filly Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Devonshire {Ire}, by Fast Company {Ire}), who ran second in last month's Listed Star S. at Sandown, employed enterprising tactics in Saturday's G3 William Hill Prestige S. at Goodwood and was rewarded with a career high in the seven-furlong fillies' test. The 2-1 favourite was swiftly into stride and held sway from the outset. Shaken up when threatened at the quarter-mile marker, she poached a decisive advantage approaching the final furlong and was ridden out to hold Breege (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and Bright Diamond (Ire) (El Kabeir) by a length and 3/4-of-a-length in snug fashion.

“I've just spoken to William [Buick], he said she's got plenty of natural pace and I'm delighted with that performance,” said Charlie Appleby of the G2 Rockfel S. and G1 Fillies' Mile entry. “He sees no reason why she won't be able to step up to the mile later on, but she's very comfortable at seven furlongs for the moment. There's no set plans or future targets, but she's a filly that's progressing nicely.”

Fairy Cross becomes the 155th pattern-race winner for her sire (by Dubai Millennium {GB}) and the first for G2 Ridgewood Pearl S. victrix and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas third Devonshire (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}). Her second dam Nova Tor (Ire) (Trans Island {GB}) produced Listed Harry Rosebery S. winner Hurryupharriet (Ire) (Camacho {GB}), herself the dam of Listed Betway Kachy S. scorer Exalted Angel (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Nova Tor's half-sister Titian Saga (Ire) (Titus Livius {Fr}) is the dam of G1 Nunthorpe S. heroine Winter Power (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}), Listed Land O'Burns Fillies' S. victrix Hay Chewed (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) and the stakes-placed Flying Sparkle (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}). Devonshire has a yearling colt by Blue Point (Ire) and a weanling colt by Ghaiyyath (Ire) to come.

APBs: Derby Day ‘Rising Star’ Strobe Aiming for Fall Return

With the completely stunned Kentucky Derby day crowd of 147,294 beginning to file out following Rich Strike (Keen Ice)'s upset for the ages, Strobe (c, 3, Into Mischief–Flashing, by A.P. Indy) looked like he could be any kind while closing out the stacked 14-race card with a dominating 'TDN Rising Star' performance.

But where's the Godolphin homebred been since the first Saturday in May?

“He's just back with Brad [Cox] and slowly getting back going again,” Godolphin Director of Bloodstock Michael Banahan said.

“He had his first little work last week [three furlongs in :38.60 at Churchill Downs Aug. 19]. Hopefully, he'll be back in the fall in a non-winners of one and then we'll come up with a gameplan for him. He's exciting. He's a fast horse and we're looking forward to getting him back on the track again.”

As for the time off, Banahan added, “There were just little minor issues that he's had all along, so he just needed a little bit of time off again. Nothing major, just enough that we had to give him that time. That was all really. He responded well to treatment and rehab. We got him back to Brad's barn relatively quickly.”

Backed as the 8-5 favorite on debut off a series of sharp-looking works for Cox, Strobe blasted out to the front, set fractions of :21.73 and :45.34 and powered home impressively to score by 4 1/2 lengths over older horses while stopping the timer for six furlongs in a snappy 1:08.71. He earned a gaudy 99 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort. The field of 11 also included promising third-place finisher Elite Power (Curlin), who has since won two straight for Hall of Famer Bill Mott.

Strobe, one of 33 'Rising Stars' for Spendthrift Farm super sire Into Mischief, is out of Flashing, who carried the famed Godolphin blue silks to victories in the GI Test S. and GI Gazelle S. She has also produced Floodlight (Medaglia d'Oro), SW & MGSP-Fr. Strobe's extended female family includes Canadian champion Key to the Moon, GI Kentucky Oaks winner Seaside Attraction and GISW Gorgeous.

“He's a talented horse,” Banahan said. “It's just a matter of getting him to the racetrack again and seeing if we can put a few races together. We're excited to get him training again and hopefully we can pick up some nice races with him down the road.”
