Derby Winner Adayar’s Arc Bid Depends On Ground

Godolphin's Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), winner of the G1 Cazoo Derby and the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. in 2021, is likely to run in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 2, as long as he gets his desired ground, trainer Charlie Appleby confirmed on Thursday. If the going is too deep, he will instead be pointed for the Oct. 15 G1 Champion S. at Ascot. Fourth in the ParisLongchamp test last year over the heavy going, the bay was then fifth in the G1 Champion S. on QIPCO British Champions Day. Planned runs at Royal Ascot, Sandown, and Ascot, did not come to fruition, and the bay made a successful return to the races in the Hilton Garden Inn Doncaster Conditions S. over 10 furlongs at Doncaster on Sept. 8.

“It's most likely Adayar is going to work on Saturday and if we're happy with that work we will then leave him in the Arc on Monday and take a look at it then,” said Appleby.

“We'll keep an eye on the ground. We know what it can be like [at ParisLongchamp] and I don't want him to have to encounter what he went through last year.

“Admittedly the race wasn't run to suit us–we ended up on the lead where we didn't want to be–but it was very testing conditions and then we backed him up on Champions Day.

“The mindset is still Champions Day, but if the Arc comes up as being sensible ground, we know at this time of year you're going to have to go where the ground is because every day it can change.

“If I was going to say we'll wait for Champions Day and all of a sudden it's bottomless there, I'll be kicking myself that I've potentially missed an opportunity of running in the Arc on decent ground.”

Added Appleby, “He looks great. Everyone was very pleased with the manner in which he did it at Doncaster and he's come out of there thinking he's King Kong again, and that's what you need.

“He finished last season off with two gruelling races in the Arc and on Champions Day and it takes a lot for a horse sometimes to come back from it.

“He's got his mojo 110% now. He's back to how he was when he won the Derby, if not better.”

The trainer also provided an update on Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who won three Group 1s in 2021 and was third in the Arc later that season. Third in the G2 Hardwicke S. on his 4-year-old bow, the chestnut has not graced a racecourse since an eighth-place finish in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on July 3.

“He's probably not going to be in the equation, to be honest,” Appleby added. “I feel for him in that we encountered quick ground during the summer. The first run [at Royal Ascot] we got away with it and on his second run we didn't think we'd get the conditions we unfortunately ran on in the end and it didn't help his cause.

“I backed right off him and what he's encountered hasn't helped us in preparation for an Arc.”

Racing In Dubai Sale Topped By Western Writer

Western Writer (Ire) (Shamardal) (lot 42) stole the show at the Emirates Racing Authority Racing in Dubai Sale on Saturday, bringing AED1.8 million (£429,849/€490,499/$490,129) from Athbah Racing. A dual winner, the 3-year-old gelding counts G2 Park Hill S. heroine Echoes In Eternity (Ire) (Spinning World) as his second dam.

Second on the leader board at the end of the day, was lot 27, Thundersquall (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). One of six purchased outright by Satish Seemar, the placed gelding brought AED600,000. His dam is the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Yorkshire Oaks victrix Pleascach (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}).

Seemar was also in action for Star Point (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 8) (AED200,000); lot 9, Maputo (Ire) (Shamardal), for the same price; Arabian Tale (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 12) for AED320,000; the winner Mythical Dancer (Ire) (Shamardal) (lot 25) for AED375,000; and lot 26, the winning True Accolade (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) for AED320,000.

Another sophomore gelding to sell was Deciduous (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 31), who went to Salem bin Ghadayer on a bid of AED470,000. Out of the Group 3-placed Black Cherry (Ire) (Mount Nelson {GB}), the February foal and two-time winner is a half-brother to the listed-placed Little Rollright (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Knocked down for AED450,000 was the winning Fall Of Rome (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 20). He was selected by Satish Seemar for Michael Burke. Border Edge (Ire) (Shamardal) (lot 15), a winner a three, was also snapped up for AED250,000 by Seemar on behalf of Burke, earlier in the sale.

Of the 43 entered, all 43 were marked as sold (100%) for a gross of AED9,572,000 (£2,285,951/€2,608,477/$2,606,398).

Mysterious Night By Daylight In Summer

Mysterious Night (Ire) (c, 2, Dark Angel {Ire}–Mistrusting {Ire}, by Shamardal) made it back-to-back victories for Godolphin in the GI Pattison Summer S. Saturday, careering away to score by 5 3/4 lengths in the finish from Klaravich Stables' Appraise (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) for an Irish-bred exacta. The Summer S., won last year by Albahr (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), is a 'Win and You're In' qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland the first weekend of November.

Tightening from 3-5 into 1-2 as the gates flew, the homebred–who wore a hood in the preliminaries–jumped alertly from the inside stall and raced keenly, but not overly so, while scraping paint, as Ninetyfour Expos (Outwork) galloped them along from Chiseler (Speightstown) through sensible fractions of :24.17 and :47.83 down the back side of the E.P. Taylor turf course. With William Buick sitting very chilly in the saddle as they raced around the turn, Mysterious Night crept closer on the swing for home, ranged up to Ninetyfour Expos while under no encouragement whatsoever in upper stretch and the race was all but over two furlongs down. Finally given his head with three-sixteenths of a mile to travel, Mysterious Night opened up readily on his rivals and hit the line hard, despite swapping over to his incorrect lead inside the final half-furlong. The previously unbeaten Philip My Dear (Silent Name {Jpn}), last-out winner of the Soaring Free S., plugged on late into third.

“He rode beautiful and the track is in great condition,” said Buick. “I walked it before, and you know, it's as good as it always is. We knew the horse was going to like it, fast ground. He travelled through the race beautifully. He was giving me plenty of confidence throughout the race and he was happy travelling away, so it was perfect for him and hopefully he can go on from here.”

Mysterious Night graduated at skinny odds in a Newbury conditions test June 9 and has seen nothing but pattern company since, finishing third in the July 7 G2 July S. at Newmarket and filling the same spot in the G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood July 26 ahead of a half-length success in the G3 Prix Francois Boutin S. at Deauville Aug. 14.

Pedigree Notes:

Mysterious Night was completing a remarkable international triple for his Yeomanstown Stud-based sire, who was also represented Saturday by Top Ranked (Ire) in the G3 Bill Ritchie S. at Randwick in Sydney, Australia, in the overnight hours, and by Barefoot Angel (Ire), who upset the G3 Firth of Clyde S. as a 20-1 chance at Ayr Racecourse in Scotland.

The blaze-faced bay is the sixth North American winner at graded level for Dark Angel, joining the likes of Grade I winners Raging Bull (Fr), his GI Just A Game S. and GI Diana S. full-sister Althiqa (Ire) and Hunt (Ire). sixth North American winner at graded level for Dark Angel, joining the likes of Grade I winners Raging Bull (Fr), his GI Just A Game S. and GI Diana S. full-sister Althiqa (Ire) and Hunt (Ire).
