Freshman Sire Masar Off The Mark In Paris

Darley's first-crop sire Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) became Europe's latest freshman off the mark when Godolphin's homebred juvenile Will Scarlet (GB) eased to a smooth victory in Thursday's €34,000 Prix du Bassin Parisien over seven furlongs at ParisLongchamp.

WILL SCARLET (GB) (c, 2, Masar {Ire}–Lady Marian {Ger} {G1SW-Fr, GSW & G1SP-Ger, $546,566}, by Nayef), a May 25 debut runner-up tackling 6 1/2 furlongs at this venue last time, recovered from a sluggish getaway to stalk the tempo in a handy third through the early fractions. Impeded along the rail by the errant Jojo Junior (Fr) (Hunter's Light {Ire}) soon after turning for home, the 2-5 favourite worked his way outwards into the clear passing the furlong pole and quickened smartly to deny Intellect (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) by an ultimately snug 3/4-of-a-length in the dying strides, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by New Approach {Ire}). Will Scarlet, half-brother to a yearling filly by Kingman (GB), is the ninth of 10 foals and fifth scorer out of G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) and G1 Prix Jean Romanet runner-up Lady Marian (Ger) (Nayef), who was the second highest-priced lot when knocked down for 1.8-million guineas at Tattersalls' 2008 December Mares sale. The February-foaled bay is also kin to dual Group 2-winning G1 Jebel Hatta fifth Loxley (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). Kentucky Oaks Heroine Pretty Mischievous Delivers in Acorn Thriller

ELMONT, NY — Godolphin homebred and 'TDN Rising Star' Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief) followed up her thrilling GI Kentucky Oaks victory with a hard-fought, head decision over Dorth Vader (Girvin) in Friday's GI Acorn S. at Belmont Park. Occult (Into Mischief) was another four lengths back in third.

Cutting back to a one-turn 1 1/16 miles here, the 9-5 second-choice raced within striking distance in an outside fifth as the stretching-out and favored 'Rising Star' Munnys Gold (Munnings) led through fractions of :23.34 and :46.37. Pretty Mischievous loomed boldly while three wide approaching the quarter pole and looked well on her way after hitting the front in the stretch. Dorth Vader, making her first start for George Weaver after finishing fifth in the Kentucky Oaks, made her work for it, however, and battled back gamely along the inside down the stretch. Pretty Mischievous showed her class in the end to win her second straight and joins fellow recent Kentucky Oaks winners Bird Town (Cape Town) (2013), Abel Tasman (Quality Road) (2017) and Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) (2018) to double up in the Acorn.

Sheikh Mohammed's operation also won this race last year with Matareya (Pioneerof the Nile).

“What's funny is that in the blink of an eyelid, when Todd's [Pletcher] filly [Munnys Gold] kind of backed up, she was in front [and] I was worried because she will idle a little bit, like she did in the [Kentucky] Oaks and she did it again today,” winning trainer Brendan Walsh said. “She's just a great filly. It's unbelievable and such an honor to have her for the people we have her [for]. I think she'll get better and better as the year goes on. She's still got a bit of furnishing to do. We still have a little ways to go.”

Pretty Mischievous, a winner of her first two starts sprinting at Churchill Downs last fall, suffered her first career defeat finishing third in the GII Golden Rod S. beneath the Twin Spires Nov. 26. The bay enjoyed a fantastic winter at the Fair Grounds, annexing her first two career stakes victories in the Untapable S. Dec. 26 and the GII Rachel Alexandra S. Feb. 18. She looked primed for a third straight win in the GII Fair Grounds Oaks, but, after hitting the front in the stretch, reported home a well-beaten second. She was making her first start with blinkers for Walsh on the first Friday in May.

Winning jockey Tyler Gaffalione added, “I'm just so proud of her. She's really developed into an amazing filly. She seems to just be getting bigger and stronger with each race. I can't wait for the day she finishes out one of her races. She gets to the lead and she kind of waits. She just has so much talent. I don't think we've seen the best of her yet.”

He continued, “I think the blinkers have really helped her because before when we made the lead, she would just go to a complete stop. At least now you're getting a little bit more out of her.”

Pretty Mischievous is one of 130 black-type winners bred in the Northern Hemisphere by Into Mischief, who also has 64 graded winners, 17 at the top level. The super sire cross of Into Mischief over Tapit is also responsible for GSW Hoosier Philly, a recent second in the GII Black-Eyed Susan S., and GSW Rocket Can, ninth in the GI Kentucky Derby. Pretty Mischievous is the second foal out of 2016 GI Spinaway S. winner Pretty City Dancer, who is a half-sister to GI Gazelle S. winner Lear's Princess (Lear Fan). Stroud Coleman Bloodstock acquired Pretty City Dancer on behalf of Godolphin for $3.5 million at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale while she was carrying her first foal, now the winning 4-year-old Medaglia d'Oro filly named Ornamental. The mare was barren to Uncle Mo for 2021, but has a Medaglia d'Oro yearling filly and a Street Sense filly born Mar. 28.

Arqana €2M Sensation Snags TDN Rising Star In Haydock Debut

Godolphin's Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}–Golden Valentine {Fr}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) turned heads when selling for €2-million at last year's Arqana August fixture, and he was back in the limelight with a highly polished debut display in Friday's GPW Recruitment Carl Foster Memorial EBF Novice S. at Haydock. The well-supported 6-5 favourite hit the line powerfully and finished clear of Under The Sun (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), attaining 'TDN Rising Star' status in the seven-furlong heat with an impressive five-length triumph.

Ancient Wisdom settled into a comfortable rhythm behind the leaders in fourth after a sharp exit from an outer stall. Bounding forward in the straight to launch his bid on the bridle passing the quarter-mile marker, he quickened in style to settle the contest in a matter of strides approaching the final furlong and surged clear in taking fashion to rout his rivals by daylight. The April-foaled bay took several furlongs to gear down and was halfway along the backstraight before doing so.

Ancient Wisdom, half to a yearling colt by Lope De Vega (Ire), is the third of four reported foals and second scorer produced by G3 Prix Minerve winner Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}), herself one of seven stakes performers out of G3 Prix Cleopatre victrix Gold Round (Ire) (Caerleon). Golden Valentine's siblings include her G3 Prix du Lys-winning full-brother Goldwaki (Ger), GIII Robert J Frankel S. victrix and GI Rodeo Drive S. runner-up Luck (Kitten's Joy) and the dam of G3 Prix Vanteaux winner and GI E P Taylor S. third Platane (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}). BASET Thoroughbred Endeavour Awards Announced

The new BASET Thoroughbred Endeavour Awards were announced by The British-Australia Society Education Trust (BASET), in partnership with Godolphin, the British Racing School (BRS), and Thoroughbred Industry Careers (TIC) on Thursday. The awards support deserving young people from Britain and Australia embarking on careers in the equine and racing industries.

The first recipient is Grace McBeath, who is from New South Wales, Australia. The aim of the programme is to offer participants the chance to further develop their career, gain new skills and experience international practices on a six-month exchange programme. The inaugural award will provide funding to support a six-month racing stable placement organised by The British Racing School which will involve working for Sir Mark Prescott at Heath House Stables and Andrew Balding at Kingsclere Park House Stables. Later this year, the opportunity will be reciprocated and a second BASET Thoroughbred Endeavour Award will be made to support a young person from Great Britain in Australia, arranged by the TIC.

John May, BASET's Chair of Trustees, said, “We are thrilled to have partnered with The British Racing School and Thoroughbred Industry Careers to create this incredible opportunity for our award winners, helping them to gain international experience working in racing. We hope this exciting initiative will mark the start of a long-term collaboration between our organisations to support deserving young people from Britain and Australia and strengthen the bilateral bond between the two countries.
