Godolphin Colt Becomes Dubawi’s 35th TDN Rising Star

Making his debut in the same seven-furlong Leicester novice contest won 12 months ago by his smart stablemate Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), Godolphin's Great Truth (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})–Beyond Reason {Ire}, by Australia {GB}) created a big impression to become the operation's latest TDN Rising Star. Content to track the leading pair throughout the strongly-run early stages, the Charlie Appleby-trained 8-11 favourite loomed on the front end under James Doyle two out as he received a bump from the front-running Paladin (Ire) (Justify).

Striding on from there, the first foal out of the G2 Prix du Calvados and G3 Prix Six Perfections-winning dam veered right through greenness but still managed to power to a 5 1/2-length success from fellow newcomer Love You Darling (GB) (Land Force {Ire}), with 1 1/4 lengths back to the useful yardstick Phone Tag (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) in third. Great Truth is the 35th TDN Rising Star for his outstanding sire in a list including Zarak (Fr), Coronet (GB), Benbatl (GB), Wild Illusion (GB), Too Darn Hot (GB), In Italian (GB) and Eldar Eldarov (GB).

“I sat on him last week and he showed that he had ability in his work,” Doyle said. “He was quite green cantering to post today and he took his eye off the ball and had a bit of a wander once he got to the front, but he responded good. That will come with experience and I couldn't be happier. Beyond Reason was a handy mare for us and it'll be interesting to see how far he'll get, as he's quite a reactive horse. I didn't expect him to quicken up quite as much as he did, as at home he had been going through his gears gradually but was probably just sleeping a bit.”

Pedigree Notes

Beyond Reason, a classy juvenile who was also third in the G2 Cape Verdi as a 4-year-old, also has a yearling full-brother to the winner and a colt foal by Lope De Vega (Ire). She is out of No Explaining (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) who was successful in the GIII Gallorette H. and was third in the GII Dance Smartly S. and GII Lake George S. The family includes the GII American H. scorer Bayamo (Ire) (Valanour {Ire}), who was also runner-up in the GI Eddie Read H. and GI Charles Whittingham Memorial H.

All eight winners are eligible for the Irish Racing Excellence Award, which will be announced at the awards ceremony. In addition, the Racecourse Award winner, chosen by the Irish Stable Staff Association, will also be revealed on the awards night.

Saturday’s Observations: TDN Rising Stars Back in Action at HQ

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Insights features a pair of TDN Rising Stars in Ancient Wisdom and Imperial Emperor (Ire) in a couple of different Novice races at Newmarket.

13.32 Newmarket, Nov, £8,000, 2yo, 7fT
Godolphin's €2-million Arqana August acquisition ANCIENT WISDOM (FR) (Dubawi {Ire}), a son of G3 Prix Minerve victrix Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}), makes a swift return to action having garnered a 'TDN Rising Star' badge when streaking to an impressive five-length success over seven furlongs at Haydock earlier this month. The Charlie Appleby trainee returns over the same trip here and is opposed by five in a contest the stable has annexed twice in the last three years.

14.42 Newmarket, Nov, £10,000, 3yo, 8fT
Charlie Appleby representative IMPERIAL EMPEROR (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}), a son of GI Man O' War S. heroine Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), is another Godolphin 'TDN Rising Star' tasked with HQ duty in his second start. The February-foaled homebred earned his moniker over this distance at the town's Rowley Mile venue in October and is the only prior winner in a field of six. His rivals include the George Boughey trainee Moonspirit (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who is an unraced half-brother to Godolphin's three-time Group 3 winner Local Time (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Godolphin’s Triple Group 1 Winner And Classic Hero Native Trail Retired

Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), an unbeaten champion 2-year-old and brilliant winner of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas last year, has been retired.

The Charlie Appleby-trained colt won three times at the highest level and will embark on a stud career next year, according to Godolphin's Director Of Studs, Liam O'Rourke.

He said, “Native Trail has had an exceptional career and owes us nothing. We feel now is the time to retire him and he will take up stud duties in 2024.”

Native Trail was last seen finishing eighth in Tuesday's G1 Queen Anne behind Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

Along with his Irish Guineas success, he landed two Group 1 races as a juvenile–the National S. at the Curragh followed by the Dewhurst at Newmarket. The Le Haras d'Haspel-bred was also second in the G1 2000 Guineas in 2022.

The 4-year-old retires having won six of his 11 starts and has amassed over £1 million in prize-money. He was a €50,000 Arqana December foal, 67,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, and a 210,000gns Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up 2-year-old.

The son of Needleleaf (GB) (Observatory), herself a full-sister to Group 1-winning sprinter African Rose (GB) and G3 Prix d'Aumale heroine and Classic-placed Helleborine (GB), is from the extended family of G1 Dewhurst S. winner Distant Music (Distant View). Helleborine is the dam of dual group winner Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who won the G2 Coventry S.

Stud plans will be announced in due course.
