Dubawi’s Space Blues Powers To Lennox Success

Retaining all his old pizzazz, ‘TDN Rising Star’ Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) backed up victories in last month’s Listed Spring Trophy and G3 Prix de la Porte Maillot with an impressive win in Tuesday’s G2 Qatar Lennox S. over seven furlongs at Goodwood. Adopting his usual patient role off the tempo in ninth through halfway, the 2-1 favourite made eyecatching headway out wide in the straight and was not for catching once quickening smartly for control approaching the final eighth to easily outpoint Duke of Hazzard (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) by two lengths. Escobar (Ire) (Famous Name {GB}) ran on to finish a half-length further back in third.

“He ran very well when he was third over 6 1/2 furlongs in the Maurice de Gheest last year, he’s a horse who’s still improving and he’s very professional and easy to deal with,” said in-form rider William Buick of last year’s G1 Prix Jean Prat and G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest placegetter. “It’s beautiful ground out there and they’re making a print, which suits him, and I thought that was a really good performance today. Six furlongs at Meydan in the Spring didn’t work out for him, but that was not the horse’s fault, and seven is his optimum trip. Charlie [Appleby] will keep all options open for him.”

Appleby, who had teamed up with Buick to garner Sunday’s G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis in Munich, added, “He got a nice, clean run round and there was plenty of pace on. William [Buick] was keen to make sure he kept it simple with him and that’s what he did. I was always confident he was going to pick up, it was a good performance and I’m delighted.” Looking ahead to another tilt at the Deauville festival, the trainer continued, “On the back of that, it’ll be nice to see how fresh we can get him, as quick as possible, as I feel the Maurice de Gheest is a nice race for him. He ran well in it last year and he’s a stronger horse this year. He’s a great traveller in his races and he has got that gear change. It’d be nice to give him another crack at a Group 1, but it does come soon enough. He’s a seven-furlong specialist, it’s proven on paper statistically throughout his career, and there’s obviously the [G1 Prix de la] Foret [at ParisLongchamp on Arc weekend] to consider too.”

Space Blues, one of four winners produced by G2 Challenge S. victress Miss Lucifer (Fr) (Noverre), is a half-brother to MGSW G2 Al Maktoum Challenge and G3 UAE Oaks winner Shuruq (Elusive Quality), herself the dam of stakes-winning GII Fair Grounds Oaks and GIII Wonder Again S. placegetter Antoinette (Hard Spun). The homebred chestnut is also kin to the unraced 2-year-old filly Beautiful Future (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) and a 2020 Dark Angel (Ire) filly. Miss Lucifer is out of a winning half to G2 King Edward VII S.-winning sire Amfortas (Ire) (Caerleon) and fellow sires Chevalier (Ire) (Danehill) and Chief Lone Eagle (Giant’s Causeway). She is also kin to G3 Prix de Royaumont victress Legend Maker (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), herself the dam of G1 1000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters (Kingmambo), and to the dam of G1 Matron S. victress Chachamaidee (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}).

Master of the Seas to Step Up to Group 1 Company

Unbeaten juvenile Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a winner of the July 11 G2 Superlative S. last out for Godolphin, will target Group 1 races for the foreseeable future, trainer Charlie Appleby revealed. The bay got the job done on debut at Newmarket on June 18 and is now a potential candidate for the G1 National S. in Ireland, the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in France and the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy in the UK according to Appleby.

“Master Of The Seas is having a break,” said Appleby. “We have one eye on the [Sept. 13] National S.–which he would need supplementing for, if we decide to go for that. He also has a pedigree which suggests stepping up in trip will suit him as well, and there are races like the [Oct. 4] Lagardere and Vertem Futurity Trophy [on Oct. 24] we can look at later on.

“He’s very much an autumn-campaign horse, and that is what we have always had on our minds. He has surpassed what we expected him to do pre-autumn. He was a good winner of the Superlative, and the form has been boosted with Richard Hannon’s horse [Ventura Tormenta (Ire) (Acclamation {GB})] winning the [G2 Prix] Robert Papin. The second half of the season is where you will see him towards his best.”

Appleby also had an update on 2019 champion juvenile Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal), who returned to the winner’s circle in the July 12 G1 Prix Jean Prat.

“It’s either going to be the [Sept. 6 G1 Prix du] Moulin or the [Oct. 4 G1 Prix de la] Foret–they are the autumn goals we are looking at for him,” said Appleby. “We have one eye on working back from the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile. If he is going to get it [a mile], the chances are it will be there. We might be tempted to try him back over it in the Moulin, though. He is having a break now–which he deserves, having had three quickish runs.”

Another Appleby/Godolphin runner is the gelding Volkan Star (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who won the G3 Prix du Lys when last seen on July 14.

“He has come out of the race well, and we might take a look at the [Aug. 19] G2 Great Voltigeur for him-or possibly go back to France,” added the trainer. “We gelded him from two to three for a reason, and you could see from his last run he is developing mentally and going the right way.”

British Champion Jumps Sire Kayf Tara Pensioned

Overbury Stud’s Kayf Tara (GB) (Sadler’s Wells–Colorspin {Fr}, by High Top {Ire}), a leading National Hunt sire in Britain for many years, has been pensioned due to declining fertility, Racing Post reported on Monday. Champion jumps sire nine times in Britain, the Meon Valley Stud-bred and 210,000gns Tattersalls Houghton September Yearling is credited with champions in that sphere like Carruthers (GB), Edwulf (GB), Identity Thief (Ire), Special Tiara (GB), Tea For Two (GB) and Thistlecrack (GB). A winner of four top level races, including two editions of the Irish St. Leger and two Gold Cups for Godolphin and Saeed bin Suroor, the multiple English/Irish highweighted stayer retired to Overbury and covered his first mares in 2001. Kayf Tara also sired one black-type winner on the Flat.

Barney Roy’s German Adventure Yields A Third Group 1 Success

Godolphin’s well-travelled Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) began this latest European campaign with a third in Royal Ascot’s G1 Prince of Wales’s S. last month and the gelded bay was all heart to claim Sunday’s G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich. The even-money favourite sported temporary headgear during the preliminaries of the 10-furlong contest and the soothing effect contributed to a smooth passage off the clear leaders in rear for the most part. Making headway in the straight when ridden along with a quarter-mile remaining, he joined the front rank, despite rolling around, entering the final furlong and was driven out to earn a third elite-level success in game fashion. Try as he might, last term’s G1 Deutsches Derby fourth Quest The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) could not find a way past in the latter stages and was denied by a neck, with Joseph O’Brien-trained G3 Meld S. victor Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}) running on well to finish 1 1/4 lengths adrift in third.

“We were a little concerned when the rain came this morning as all of his best form is on fast ground,” said William Buick of the 2017 G1 St James’s Palace S. and this year’s G1 Jebel Hatta hero. “I thought the German horses set a very good standard, it was a very tough race and he struggled with the conditions from a long way out. He’s a high-class horse and his courage and ability got him to win the race. We thought the pace would be good and he jumped a little bit slow from the gates. We were positioned one place further back than where I wanted to be, but he was comfortable and relaxed. I followed Quest The Moon as I knew he’d take me into the race and I got a nice lead off him.”

Winning trainer Charlie Appleby added, “Barney Roy and Spotify flew in yesterday and stabled well overnight, but we came here looking for good-to-firm ground and the rain was a negative for our two horses. There was a strong pace from the start, the local horses ran very well and stamina really came into play.” He continued, “I’d like to thank Munich for putting the race on and allowing us to come. I’d also like to thank the sponsors very much for sponsoring the race at such challenging times for everybody. We’re delighted to be here, at Group 1 level, for Godolphin and very much appreciate everybody’s support.”

Barney Roy is the first of five foals and one of three winners produced by a daughter of G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. and G3 Brownstown Stud S. victress Cheyenne Star (Ire) (Mujahid). He is half to Listed Maggie Dickson Gold Cup runner-up Wisdom Mind (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and the once-raced 2-year-old colt Noble Dynasty (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who shaped with a deal of promise when a debut second at Newmarket last month. Descendants of his Listed Garnet S.-winning third dam Charita (Ire) (Lycius), herself a half-sister to GSW G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua second Stanott (Ire) (Mukaddamah), include ill-fated MG1SW speedster Gordon Lord Byron (Ire) (Byron {GB}).
