Daughter Of Just The Judge Returns At Lingfield

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Today’s Observations features the second start of a daughter of a Classic winner.

Godolphin’s €1-million Arqana December foal NASH NASHA (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) closed out a Charlie Appleby-trained trifecta when third tackling seven furlongs at Newmarket in her July 11 debut and gets a second chance to shed maiden status over an extra furlong in this all-weather bow. Her five rivals feature Sultan Ali’s hitherto unraced Cherokee Dance (Honor Code), who is a half-sister to GIII Sugar Swirl S. victress Dearest (Midshipman) and one of two contenders representing the David Simcock stable.

Appleby, bin Suroor to Swerve Melbourne

Godolphin’s Newmarket-based trainers Charlie Appleby and Saeed bin Suroor have informed Racing Victoria that they will not send horses to this year’s Melbourne spring carnival amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Both trainers have enjoyed success at the carnival as of late; Charlie Appleby won the 2018 G1 Melbourne Cup with Cross Counter (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), while bin Suroor has saddled three runners up in the great race while Benbatl (GB) won the G1 Ladbrokes S. in 2018 and was second to Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) in the G1 Cox Plate.

The Australian state of Victoria has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases as of late.

“Both Saeed and Charlie have advised over the last few days that they won’t be coming to Melbourne this year,” Racing Victoria General Manager of International Operations Paul Bloodworth told Racing.com. “Charlie Appleby advised last night that because of the change to Stage 4 restrictions, he wasn’t comfortable sending his staff to Melbourne and Saeed has also advised he won’t be coming.

“It’s a great shame. Saaed has been a regular in Australia for 30 years and Charlie certainly over the last five or six years, so it’s a shame they won’t be able to compete.”

Plenty of other European-based trainers have engaged runners in the spring features-Aidan, Joseph and Donnacha O’Brien between them field 22 of the 182 entries for the Cox Plate on Oct. 24-but restrictions on staff travel into the country could yet scupper those plans.

Threat Anchors Tattersalls August Catalogue

MGSW Threat (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) is the highest-rated horse at 112 in the 774-strong inaugural Tattersalls August Sale catalogue, which was released on Sunday. Consigned by Richard Hannon’s East Everleigh Stables for Cheveley Park Stud as lot 469, the chestnut is one of 541 colts and geldings in and out of training set to go under the hammer from Aug. 24-26. There are also 214 fillies in and out of training, as well as 19 broodmares set to sell in Newmarket. A winner of the G2 Gimcrack S. and the G2 Champagne S. as a juvenile, Threat is out of a daughter of European highweight Shiva (Jpn) (Hector Protector) and is from the same family as European champion Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Originating as a response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the sale is very similar in format to the Tattersalls July Sale, and features full drafts from Ballydoyle Stables, Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms, Rabbah Bloodstock, Shadwell Stud, The Castlebridge Consignment and Jamie Railton among many others.

Other lots of interest include recent listed winner Surf Dancer (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) (lot 706) from William Haggas’s Somerville Lodge Stables and fellow listed scorer Fort Myers (War Front) (lot 387), one of nine from Ballydoyle. Of Juddmonte’s 24 homebreds, GSP Georgeville (GB) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) (lot 436), and the unraced Sophistry (GB) (Make Believe {GB}) (lot 445), a half-sister to G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud hero Epicuris (GB) (Rail Link {GB}) star. Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell boasts 61 lots, with the 100-rated Elwazir (GB) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 667) one to watch out for, while 71 lots are slated to enter the ring for Godolphin and Rabbah, featuring the 107-rated Walkinthesand (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) (lot 699) and a 95-rated son of Dubawi (Ire) in Country (GB) (lot 701) for Hannon and Haggas, respectively. One of 41 from Jamie Railton, SP Pom Malpic (Fr) (Pomellato {Ger}) (lot 486) earned her black-type with a second in the Listed Prix La Fleche at Chantilly.

The Castlebridge Consignment fields 79 lots, the largest consignment in the sale. Lot 51, Mzyoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a half-sister to the late MG1SW and Group 1 sire Society Rock (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), will be offered by Castlebridge with her Exceed And Excel (Aus) colt at foot and carrying to sire-on-the-rise Night of Thunder (Ire).

“The COVID related circumstances surrounding the decision to introduce a Tattersalls August Sale are well documented and we have been hugely encouraged by both the quality and quantity of entries,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “Originally pencilled in for two days, we have extended the sale to three days to accommodate the number of entries and the catalogue has the strength and depth that will appeal to a wide cross section of buyers, both domestic and further afield. Despite the current challenges, our recent July Sale achieved a phenomenal 96% clearance rate which demonstrates the enduring appeal of sales of this nature at Tattersalls, and we have already received extremely positive feedback from our myriad of overseas markets.”

New Owners Consider Runhappy Travers for South Bend

South Bend (Algorithms), purchased privately by a partnership group that includes Gary Barber, Adam Wachtel, Peter Deutsch and Leonard Schleifer of Pantofel Stable following a runner-up effort in the June 27 GIII Ohio Derby, could make his first start for the new connections in the Aug. 8 GI Runhappy Travers S.

“We’re leaning toward the Travers,” confirmed the colt’s new trainer Bill Mott. “The partnership group wants to have a good look at that. He’ll work probably the first part of the week.”

Previously campaigned by Sagamore Farm and trainer Stanley Hough, South Bend won last year’s Street Sense S. over the main track at Churchill Downs and his three stakes placings over the turf include a third-place finish in the Feb. 29 GIII Palm Beach S.

Of the colt’s versatility, Mott said, “I think that’s one of the reasons they bought him. He looks good on both surfaces.”

In his first work for Mott, South Bend went four furlongs in :49.12 (5/31) at Saratoga July 27.

“We breezed him the one time. We like the horse, he’s doing well,” Mott said. “He’s a nice horse to train. He moves well and he worked well for us. I’m happy with him.”

Trainer Mike Stidham confirmed that Godolphin homebred Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper), most recently a closing third in the July 16 GIII Peter Pan S., is also under consideration for the Travers.

“The Travers is a possibility. He’ll work [Saturday] and we’ll know more after he works,” said Stidham. “Ultimately, he has to put himself in a better position early. You can’t win those types of races with that much to do late in the race. Our goal was to try blinkers on him and see what type of response he gives, so we can try to be a little bit closer.”
