Slickly Dead At 25

World champion miler and leading French sire Slickly (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}-Slipstream Queen, by Conquistador Cielo) has died aged 25 at Haras du Logis. The grey had been pensioned from stud duties in 2019, having stood at stud at Logis since he retired to stud in 2003.

Julian Ince, who has managed Slickly's stud career, said, 'Slickly has been a wonderful horse to have at Logis, and had a very loyal following among French breeders. He was the perfect sire for the French 'primes'–his stock could win as early juveniles and still be going strong as 6- or 7-year-olds, much as he was himself. He reliably transmitted his will to win. He was quite white in his old age, with plenty of lumps and bumps, but he was always happy to see a friendly face, and it was a sad day when we finally had to let him go.”

Bred by Jean-Luc Lagardere, Slickly was trained initially by Andre Fabre for Godolphin to win the G3 Prix la Rochette at two and the G2 Prix Noailles and G1 Grand Prix de Paris at three, in addition to finishing second to Dubai Millennium in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois. Transferred to Saeed bin Suroor at four, Slickly added the G3 La Coupe and G2 Prix Dollar, and he was at his best at five when winning the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and the G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua. Slickly made just one start at six, defending his Premio Vittorio di Capua title.

Slickly's 17 stakes winners were headed by his four-time Group 1 winner Meandre (Fr), who like his sire won the Grand Prix de Paris. At his peak, 17% of Slickly's offspring won at least €100,000 in prize money and French premiums. Slickly's line will continue through the likes of his Group 1 performer Gris de Gris (Fr), who is doing well as a jumps sire, while his broodmare daughters include the Group 1 producer Maka (Fr). Slickly's sister Sichilla (Ire) is the dam of French champion sire Siyouni (Fr).

Maxfield Past ‘Hiccup’ In Training, Potential Targets Include Mineshaft, Saudi Cup

Though a minor illness knocked undefeated Maxfield out of contention for this weekend's Pegasus World Cup, the 4-year-old son of Street Sense has fully recovered and recorded a half-mile breeze in :49.80 last Saturday at the Fair Grounds.

According to the Daily Racing Form, trainer Brendan Walsh and the Godolphin ownership are planning to start Maxfield in either the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 20, or the G3 Mineshaft Handicap at the Fair Grounds on Feb. 13.

“He looked good and he came back good,” Walsh told drf.com on Wednesday. “It seems like he got over that little hiccup just fine. He trained this morning before I left, and he looks great.”

Maxfield won the G1 Breeders' Futurity in 2019 at Keeneland, then missed the Breeders' Cup due to injury. He returned to win Churchill's G3 Matt Winn Stakes in May of 2020, but missed time again until he returned to win the listed Tenacious Stakes at the Fair Grounds on Dec. 19.

‘Maturing All At The Right Time’: Undefeated Rebel’s Romance Targeting Saudi Derby, UAE Derby

One of the most exciting horses in training in the UAE is Godolphin's undefeated Rebel's Romance, who has exited his thrilling victory last week (over HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Mouheeb) in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial in proper order. The proverbial sky is the limit for the son of Dubawi, with many exciting options ahead the Charlie Appleby trainee.

“Rebel's Romance is in good form,” Appleby reported. “He came out of the race well and I'm pleased with what he would have learned. He's got back into a nice rhythm at home and the plan is obviously to keep an eye on the Guineas and then hopefully going on to Saudi, but physically I think we'll see some improvements and he's maturing all at the right time.”

The $125,000 UAE 2000 Guineas (G3) over one mile is slated for Feb. 4, while the $1.5 million Saudi Derby is 16 days later over the same distance. Options thereafter include the $150,000 Al Bastakiya (Listed) over the same 9.5 furlongs (March 6) as the $750,000 UAE Derby (G2) on Dubai World Cup's undercard three weeks later.

Mouheeb, per his connections, also remains under consideration for all of the above.

The UAE Derby awards to the winner 100 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Mandaloun Looks to Do Juddmonte Proud in Lecomte

The same week that Juddmonte Farms’ owner and founder Khalid Abdullah passed away, the legendary outfit has a chance to take a step toward its long-sought first GI Kentucky Derby win when undefeated ‘TDN Rising Star’ Mandaloun (Into Mischief) goes postward as a likely favorite in the GIII Lecomte S. Saturday at Fair Grounds. The race kicks off the Louisiana oval’s three-race Derby prep schedule, to be followed by the GII Risen Star S. and GII Louisiana Derby.

Hammered down to 11-10 favoritism debuting Oct. 24 at Keeneland, the homebred was ninth with a quarter-mile to go and encountered sustained traffic before finding daylight inside the eighth pole and charging to get up, earning his diploma and a ‘Rising Star’ badge to boot. The bay backed that call up with a much less eventful allowance/optional claiming score Nov. 28 at Churchill. He shows five local works for this stakes and two-turn bow, capped by a half-mile move in :48 3/5 (16/100) Jan. 9.

“He’s trained very well at Fair Grounds since we got here,” trainer Brad Cox told the Fair Grounds notes team. “We’ve always felt he was cut out to be a two-turn horse based on his physical make-up and how he trains. It shows how much talent he’s got to be able to win his first two races at sprint distances and now we’re going to do what we’ve thought he’s wanted to do all along, and that’s go long.”

Mandaloun’s task was made harder by drawing the 10-hole in the 11-horse group. Two horses who do have route experience as well as graded stakes placings as juveniles fared better when pulling the inside two posts and figure as major contenders.

Winchell Thoroughbreds’ rail-drawn Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow) followed up a 5 1/2-length maiden victory Aug. 22 at Ellis with a strong effort to be second after making a wide, early move into a fast pace in the GIII Iroquois S. Sept. 5 at Churchill. Unable to make a dent when finishing a well-beaten third in the GI Champagne S. Oct. 10 at Belmont, the $525,000 Keeneland September buy has been freshened since then and displays a trio of sharp five-furlong local breezes.

One stall to his right will be West Point Thoroughbreds and William Sandbrook’s Arabian Prince (Cairo Prince). Pulling a 12-1 upset on debut in a Churchill off-the-turfer Sept. 2, the $235,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga purchase was fourth when trying to close into a slow pace in the Street Sense S. Oct. 25 in Louisville and completed the trifecta at 13-1 in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. there Nov. 28.

“He’s a beautiful horse and this is the next step, so we’ll see how he fits,” trainer Dallas Stewart said. “He’s improved every time out, and we’re hoping for another progression Saturday. We’d like to save some ground and use the long stretch to our advantage. He’ll come running late.”

A pair of promising runners from the Mike Stidham barn figure to have a say as well. Godolphin’s well-regarded Proxy (Tapit), a neck second when unveiled in a rained-off Monmouth heat Oct. 24, the homebred triumphed in frontrunning fashion here Nov. 26 and repeated in an allowance Dec. 19.

“He’s like a big, immature kid who is still learning with racing,” Stidham said. “Last time when he won, he was a little green about switching leads coming down the lane, but once he leveled off, he drew away at the end, so we were pleased with that. We were deciding whether to run him back in this race or wait for a race like the Risen Star. We felt like he’s a big, healthy, strong colt and we thought the experience of running would do him more good than working three of four more times waiting for the Risen Star.”

Newtown Anner Stud’s Manor House (Upstart) gets a class test after pummeling Laurel maidens by 12 1/4 lengths Dec. 12.

“This is just the beginning for him,” Stidham said. “We really didn’t know what we were running against [at Laurel], but he showed a tremendous amount of talent that day and he’s done nothing but train exactly the same since the win, so, he’s definitely moving forward. We are anxious to see him run against winners and see what he can do.”
