Al Zarooni Planning Return To Training

Mahmood Al Zarooni, who in April 2013 was banned eight years by the British Horseracing Authority after 11 horses in his care tested positive for banned anabolic steroids, is planning a return to training in the UAE with his ban having recently come to an end, Racing Post reports. Al Zarooni told that publication he will begin training from Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club in the coming weeks and expects to have 20 horses in his care.

Al Zarooni was a private trainer for Godolphin based in Newmarket at the time of his rule breach, and had won 12 Group 1s for Sheikh Mohammed in the three years he was employed by him. Al Zarooni told Racing Post he takes responsibility for the steroids scandal that engulfed him, having admitted in 2013 that he himself brought the drugs into the country, though he claims he thought he could administer them to horses that weren't racing and that he wasn't trying to enhance performance.

“I have to rebuild my reputation,” he said. “What I did was a big mistake, I learned a lot of lessons and now I have to prove myself again and show this mistake will not happen again.”

“I want to make my file white,” he added. “Many people when they hear the name Al Zarooni will think of the black mark [next to his name] because of doping horses and say, 'He's a cheater'. I want to prove I was not a cheater, I never even thought about that. It was a mistake, but my horses weren't doped for racing, it was to help them heal. Most of these horses have been through hard work and they have small problems. Some have suspensory or tendon problems and it helps them heal. That was the idea. My horses were never caught in any race because it was never anything I did when they were racing.”

Oasis Dream’s Erasmo Prevails in Chantilly’s G3 Prix Paul de Moussac

Godolphin's 3-year-old colt Erasmo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), successful at Chantilly in last term's Listed Prix Saraca and in last month's Listed Prix de Pontarme at ParisLongchamp, stepped up to better a second in the Apr. 11 G3 Prix La Force with a narrow victory in Sunday's G3 Prix Paul de Moussac Longines back at Chantilly. Breizh Eagle (Fr) (Bow Creek {Ire}), who ran third in last month's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, was unable to land a telling blow and finished sixth.

“He is such a brave horse, he's all heart and a fighter,” said Godolphin's Lisa Jane Graffard. “He never runs a bad race and deserved that one. We will see how he comes out of the race, it is very warm and it may have taken a lot out of him. The [July 11 G1] Prix Jean Prat [at Deauville] is a possibility, but if he needs a rest then we will wait.”

Erasmo is one of three black-type winners for the stakes-placed Sant Elena (GB) (Efisio {GB}) and the February-foaled bay is kin to MG1SW sire Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate), MGSP Listed Metropolitan S. victor Best Approach (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and Listed Lenebane S. third Family Tree (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Murphy, Gosdens, Godolphin Take Ascot Titles

Champion jockey Oisin Murphy secured his first leading rider title at Royal Ascot on Saturday, with John and Thady Gosden clinching the leading trainer title and Godolphin walking away as leading owner.

Murphy, whose last of five victories on the week came aboard Foxes Tales (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the penultimate race of the meeting, the Golden Gates Handicap, said, “I wouldn't have expected it if you had asked me on Tuesday morning if I would be leading jockey this week–of course not. It normally belongs on Ryan [Moore] or Frankie [Dettori], but they gave me a turn this week.

“Thanks very much to the fast horses. It has been a super week. It's special, because as I get older, I appreciate these days more and more. I know I'm only 25, but life, as we learnt this week, is precious, and it's a continuous reminder.”

“My best moment of the week was Alcohol Free [winning the G1 Coronation S.],” he added. “She came along at a very important time in my career last year–I was under a lot of pressure and I managed to nail a Group 1, and [Friday] was a similar scenario. The pressure was on.”

John and Thady Gosden became the first training partnership to lead the trainers' standings at Royal Ascot with four wins and a second, while Godolphin enjoyed three wins, including Kemari (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2 Queen's Vase and Creative Force (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the closing-day G3 Jersey S.
