Godolphin’s ‘Blue Sky’ Sophs at F-T July HORA

The Godolphin racing team has been the envy of many so far in 2021, headed by reigning juvenile champion Essential Quality (Tapit), who took the GI Belmont S. last month. And while the organization can usually be counted on to turn out top-tier performers year after year, some of the hopefuls don't quite make it to the highest levels. As is generally the case with many of the largest players on the racing scene, decisions must be made and as a result, the racing division pared down. Case in point, 10 prospects previously raced by the operation have been earmarked for Monday's Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale in Lexington.

“A new wave of 100 2-year-olds recently joined their program,” explained Brookdale's Joe Seitz, consignor of the Godolphin draft of horses. “They have also retained more horses over the past few years than they normally have. At this time of year, it is ideal for them to make some decisions, because if they're not going to be top-end stakes horses, then they can be very useful for someone else. They have no problem with these horses going on to be successful racehorses for somebody else. They have very high parameters that they need to meet for their stable and this is an ideal time to thin out some numbers. These horses are very useful quality horses that some people are going to have fun with.”

And while no stranger to the July sale's HORA session, Godolphin is tweaking the product on offer for the 2021 renewal.

“They sold some last year at this sale, but those were mostly older horses,” Seitz said. “This year, they are offering 3-year-olds which is a nice addition, because these horses that have plenty of conditions left and a lot of 'blue sky' in front of them.”

Heading the group is Cave Hill (Frosted), winner of Turfway's Rushaway S. Mar. 27. A winner on all three racing surfaces, Hip 613 broke his maiden going a mile in the Indiana slop last October before adding a victory in a Tampa optional claimer on the sod in December. This season, the Brendan Walsh trainee hit the board in half of his starts, including a third in the Dania Beach S. at Gulfstream in January.

“He's been training really well,” affirmed Seitz. “He is definitely a listed caliber individual.”

A half-brother to dual Grade II scorer Skylighter (Sky Mesa), the gelding is a grandson of the Grade I-winning mare, Nastique (Naskra). He is from the first crop of Godolphin's GI Whitney winner Frosted (Tapit).

“What buyer wouldn't want to have a three-weapon arsenal,” said Seitz, explaining the allure of the gelding's ability dirt, turf and all-weather. “You can take him north, you can take him south, you can really run him just about anywhere you like.”

Hailing from the same family is Hip 648, a winning son of Ghostzapper named Ghostlighter. Out of the aforementioned Skylighter, the half-brother to graded-placed Sky Painter (Street Cry {Ire}) is the winner of two career starts, including the most recent registered going a mile at Indiana in April. In his latest start, he finished runner-up in a main track Arlington optional claimer July 4.

The page doesn't get much better than that of Tapwood, cataloged as Hip 564. By leading sire Tapit, the sophomore is out of dual Grade I-winning Better Lucky (Ghostzapper), who is a granddaughter of GI Breeders' Cup Sprint heroine Desert Stormer (Storm Cat). Stakes placed in Monmouth's Sapling S. at two, the gelding broke through for Mike Stidham a Tampa in January before hitting the board in three of his next four starts, including the most recent a second-place effort in a Delaware allowance June 24.

“He is a very good-looking son of Tapit who was second in his two latest starts,” he said. “He is a maiden winner, so he still has all his conditions and we think he's sitting on a win.”

Also sporting upside is National Road (Quality Road), a half-brother to a trio of stakes performing siblings, including German listed winner Clear Water (Hard Spun). Cataloged as Hip 526, the son of Storm Lily (Storm Cat) was second going 8 1/2 furlongs over the Churchill turf June 13 before finishing third at Ellis June 27.

“He was a 'top 15 horse' among [Godolphin's] 2-year-old class last year coming out of their leg-up farm,” offered Seitz. “The horse has a lot of ability. He's been competitive on the Kentucky circuit, so there is a lot of potential there. This could be a good opportunity for someone to have some fun with especially with all the KTDF money available right now because he's Kentucky bred. And he has all his conditions.”

Representing one of the leading stallions in the nation, Hip 598, Atone (Into Mischief), annexed a trio of races in 2020 before finishing seventh in the GIII Tampa Bay S. in February. Gelded thereafter, he finished third in his two most recent starts an Arlington optional claimer June 19.

With already a win under his belt this season, Commandeer (Street Boss) hit the board in four of five starts in 2021, including a victory for trainer Eoin Harty at Tampa in April. Hip 619, who  is out of Gozlan (Tiznow), a full-sister to dual Grade II winner and Grade I placed Tizaqueena, finished third on Arlington's all-weather last weekend.

Summarizing his overall assessment of the consignment's physical appeal as a whole, Seitz said, “These horses have been in the best of hands and have sensational pedigrees. Think of the broodmare band they are coming out of. And all of the horses really look the part, they really do. I know it sounds like a party line, but physically any one of them would knock your socks off. Each one is prettier than the next.”

Oasis Dream’s Native Trail Adds To Appleby’s Superlative Tally

It was a case of another G2 Superlative S., another win for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby as Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) managed to overhaul Dhabab (Ire) (No Nay Never) and hold on from Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir) in a pulsating renewal of the seven-furlong Newmarket juvenile staging post on Saturday. Looking more of a stayer than the stable's prior three winners of this since 2016 when scoring by four lengths on debut over this trip at Sandown June 11, the 210,000gns Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up purchase needed excess stamina as he was left adrift of the action when the crunch came. Along with Masekela, the 11-4 second favourite had to come from the group racing up the centre to chase the likely winner Dhabab, who had cut loose under Frankie Dettori towards the far rail inside the final two furlongs. Organising himself on the start of the climb to the line, the bay eventually overhauled that 9-5 favourite close home and got to the post a short head before the surging Masekela. Dhabab, who looked a non-stayer in the final yards, was 1 1/2 lengths behind in third. “I was very impressed. He's a very imposing horse and I loved him the first time I saw him,” winning jockey William Buick commented. “He's a very raw horse, but when he had something to race against he kept finding more. The guys at the yard would know a lot better than me, but what I do know is that he's very good with all his work and you can't throw enough at him. He's just a lovely horse.”

Appleby went to the G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. with his last two winners of this, the Dubawi (Ire) pair of Quorto (Ire) and Master of the Seas (Ire), and it could be that The Curragh's Sept. 12 juvenile highlight is the target for Native Trail. “It's a bit of a trodden path now that I like to go to Ireland and have a go over there and the ground will suit him,” he said. “We'll look towards the National Stakes and I think potentially onto something like the [G1] Futurity Trophy [at Doncaster Oct. 23] or the [Oct. 3 G1] Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere [at ParisLongchamp] after that.”

“He was strong at the line and I think we saw that at Sandown really,” he added. “He's obviously a nice horse to ride through a race, because he goes through his gears smoothly and we saw that on his first start and I feel we've seen that again today. I won't go as far to say I was confident that we'd win, but the way the race was developing I knew he'd be doing things the right way round and hit the line strong. He was a breeze-up horse, so he will have a bit of experience put to him early doors. He's a very laid-back character though and this was a good achievement today, but I feel when he steps up in trip in time we will see a good bit of improvement again. My only concern coming into today was the quick ground–we know that Oasis Dreams are better on a sounder surface, but he's a big unit and has some big feet on him so a little bit of ease in the ground won't do him any harm. One of the first things William said when he jumped off him is that he will be a lovely three year old next year.”

Masekela was denied a clear run and therefore could be described as an unlucky loser, but trainer Andrew Balding was happy that he had put his fifth in the June 19 Listed Chesham S. behind him. “That was good to see,” he said. “I thought he would run a big race in the Chesham when we stepped him up to seven furlongs for the first time, but he just couldn't handle that deep ground. Today was much more like it and he looks an exciting horse. It was nice to see him come back to form like that and hit the line well. He will stay further in the future, but I think we stick at seven for the time being. He is a big, fine horse that I don't want to over-race this year. We will just take a deep breath now and work out a plan.”

Native Trail is the second live foal and first runner out of the unraced Juddmonte cast-off Needleleaf (GB) (Observatory), a full-sister to the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine African Rose (GB) and the G3 Prix d'Aumale winner and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Helleborine (GB) who cost the MAB Agency just 60,000gns at the 2015 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. African Rose produced the G3 Princess Margaret S. winner Fair Eva (GB) (Frankel {GB}), while Helleborine was responsible for the G2 Coventry S. winner and exciting young sire Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}) so this was very much a case of keeping up the family tradition where the dam is concerned.

The second dam New Orchid (Quest For Fame {GB}) was third in the G3 Lancashire Oaks and is a daughter of Musicanti (Nijinsky II), who also produced the G1 Dewhurst S. hero and sire Distant Music from a mating with Observatory's sire Distant View. Musicanti is kin to the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, GI Washington D.C. International and GI Suburban H.-winning champion Vanlandingham (Cox's Ridge) and to the dams of the GII Keeneland Turf Mile and G2 Prix Eugene Adam-winning sire Kirkwall (GB) (Selkirk) and to the GI American Oaks heroine Funny Moon (Malibu Moon). From the family of the GI Belmont S. hero and sire Temperence Hill, Needleleaf's yearling filly is by Kingman (GB) while she also has a filly foal by Siyouni (Fr).

Hurricane Lane To Run In Grand Prix De Paris

After it was suggested earlier this week that he could head straight for the G1 St Leger in September, Godolphin's G1 Irish Derby winner Hurricane Lane (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was on Saturday supplemented to the July 14 G1 Grand Prix de Paris.

“It obviously looked like the Irish Derby was a tough race and we half expected him to lie down for three or four days afterwards, to be honest with you,” trainer Charlie Appleby said. “However, he came out of the race really well, he's not missed an oat since and has really shown his wellness since Monday of this week.

“We had a discussion collectively during the week and it was a case of either keeping him fresh for the Leger or heading to France, and we just felt waiting for Doncaster was going to be quite a long time to keep the lid on him. He worked [Saturday] morning and William [Buick] was very happy with him. The Grand Prix de Paris is his last chance to run in a Group 1 over a mile and a half against 3-year-olds so we thought we'd take the opportunity.”

Also traveling from Newmarket will be the William Haggas-trained Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}), who was also supplemented on Saturday. Alenquer is two for two this year, having beaten the Derby winner Adayar (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the G3 Classic Trial before taking Royal Ascot's G2 King Edward VII S. Aidan O'Brien currently has Sir Lamorak (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), Wordsworth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and The Mediterranean (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) engaged.

Appleby Happy With Derby Winners

Godolphin's pair of 2021 Derby winners-G1 Cazoo Derby winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby victor Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) are both progressing well since their Classic scores according to trainer Charlie Appleby. The former, who was second in the G3 bet365 Classic Trial on Apr. 23 and the May 8 Listed Novibet Derby Trial S., turned in a solid piece of work on Saturday. The bay is pointing toward the July 24 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. at Ascot.

Appleby said, “Touch wood, all is well–they're [both] in great form. Adayar worked on Saturday and is building up towards the King George. He's done very well for his break–he put a nice bit of condition on, so it's time to start taking a bit back off again. I couldn't be any happier with him.”

A winner of his first three starts, including the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante S. at York on May 13, Hurricane Lane was third to Adayar in the blue riband on June 5, before securing his own Derby win at The Curragh on June 26. Although he too holds an entry for the King George, the Sept. 11 G1 St Leger at Doncaster is likely instead.

“Hurricane Lane has come out of the Irish Derby very well. It looked a tough, hard race–and I thought he'd sleep for a few days afterwards, but he's come out of the race bouncing. We'll potentially go straight to the St Leger with him.”
