Dark Angel’s Real World Too Strong In The Strensall

York's Saturday action kicked off in style, with the apple of Saeed bin Suroor's eye Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) again demonstrating his raw quality as his love affair with the impressive Marco Ghiani continued in the G3 Sky Bet and Symphony Group Strensall S. Dynamic in the June 16 Royal Hunt Cup at a mile and the 10-furlong Listed Steventon S. at Newbury July 17, Godolphin's progressive and as-yet untested 4-year-old was exposed on the wing early racing two lengths off the pace. Carting his rookie jockey to the front two out, the even-money favourite looked vulnerable for a few strides but stayed on again when asked a serious question to power to a 1 1/2-length success from the rock-solid 2018 winner Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper). “He might go France or Newmarket next, but his final race is going to be the [Oct. 16 G1] Queen Elizabeth II [at Ascot],” his trainer declared. “We took him to Dubai this year, but he was still weak. He's a nice horse who needs to improve, but every time he has run he has done and will be better next year.”

Real World is now unbeaten in three starts on turf and on Polytrack, with his sole start on that artificial surface coming on debut at Chelmsford in late October. Conversely unable to score on four outings on Meydan's dirt this winter, the imposing bay had managed a third placing in the Feb. 18 Listed Curlin S. but it was not until he stepped onto Royal Ascot's hallowed grass that he showed his true wares with a scarcely-believable 4 3/4-length romp in the always-competitive Royal Hunt Cup. The dam Nafura (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is also responsible for this year's Listed Cheshire Oaks winner Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who was also runner-up in the G2 May Hill S. at two. She is a half-sister to three group winners headed by the stable's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp-winning sire Librettist (Danzig) and the brilliant G1 Queen Anne S. hero and sire Dubai Destination (Kingmambo).

The third dam Mysteries (Seattle Slew), who was third in the G3 Musidora S., produced three black-type winners including the G1 July Cup and G1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp hero and proven sire Agnes World (Danzig) and the Japanese champion sprinter Hishi Akebono (Woodman). She is also the ancestress of the GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Tourist (Tiznow). Also connected to another of this stable's luminaries in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Royal Marine (Ire) (Raven's Pass), Nafura has the 2-year-old colt Home City (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) who was off the mark last week.

Pioneerof the Nile Filly Impressive at Ellis

6th-Ellis, $51,000, Msw, 8-20, 2yo, f, 6 1/2f, 1:15.87, ft, 4 1/2 lengths.
MATAREYA (f, 2, Pioneerof the Nile–Innovative Idea {GSW, $229,343}, by Bernardini), whose dam's signature win came in the 2016 GIII Groupie Doll S. here, was coupled in the wagering at 9-5 with Brendan Walsh-trained fellow Godolphin homebred Dreamalot (Ghostzapper). Straight to the front, the bay doled out splits of :22.09 and :45.07 and turned for home in command. Dreamalot came with a fence run and briefly looked like she'd give Matareya a challenge, but the front-runner shut the door and galloped home under wraps to win with promise. Dreamalot held second to complete the one-two finish not only for her owner/breeder but for late broodmare sire Bernardini. The winner's second dam is MGSW/GISP Golden Velvet (Seeking the Gold) and her third dam is MGSW Caress (Storm Cat). This is the family of Bernstein and Sky Mesa as well as a current Godolphin standout in the Walsh pupil Maxfield (Street Sense), who is also out of a Bernardini mare. Champion Sakhee Dies

G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and G1 Juddmonte International winner Sakhee (Bahri-Thawakib {Ire}, by Sadler's Wells) was euthanized on Friday at Shadwell's Nunnery Stud due to the infirmities of old age. He was 24.

Bred by the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, Sakhee was born at Shadwell Farm in Kentucky before being sent to Newmarket to join trainer John Dunlop, who had trained Sakhee's sire and dam to wins in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. and G2 Ribblesdale S., respectively, in the Shadwell blue and white. Sakhee won two of his three starts at two and opened his 3-year-old account with victories in the G3 Classic Trial and G2 Dante S. before finishing second to Sinndar (Ire) in the Derby after being collared in the final 150 yards. Sakhee ran just once more at three, finishing fourth behind Giant's Causeway in the G1 Eclipse S.

Resurfacing at four under the care of Saeed bin Suroor and carrying the Godolphin blue of Sheikh Hamdan's younger brother Sheikh Mohammed, Sakhee won the Listed Steventon S. before his prolific Group 1 double under Frankie Dettori, where he took the Juddmonte International by seven lengths over Grandera (Ire) and Medicean (GB) and the Arc by six over that year's G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix Vermeille scorer Aquarelliste (Fr) (Danehill). Sakhee rounded out his season with a second-place finish by a nose to Tiznow in the Breeders' Cup Classic on the dirt in one of the most famous finishes that meeting has ever seen. Sakhee's exploits at four earned him champion older horse honours.

Sakhee ran three times at five, winning a Nad Al Sheba conditions race before finishing third to Street Cry (Ire) in the G1 Dubai World Cup. He retired after a third in the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron with eight wins from 14 starts and a shade over £1-million in the bank.

Standing at Shadwell all bar one season from 2003 to when he was pensioned in 2016, Sakhee didn't light up the world as a sire but he provided a few notable Group 1 winners in the G1 Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup and G1 Dubai Duty Free winner Presvis (GB), the earner of more than £4-million; G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains victor Tin Horse (GB) and the G1 July Cup scorer Sakhee's Secret (GB). Sakhee had been living out his retirement at Nunnery Stud.

Dubawi’s Yibir Takes The Voltigeur

Further evidence that Charlie Appleby holds all the aces in the 3-year-old middle-distance colt department was in plain view on Wednesday as Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) had his turn on the Moulton Paddocks carrousel of success in York's G2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur S. Backed into 6-1 before the off, the July 8 G3 Bahrain Trophy winner who was last seen finishing sixth in the G3 Gordon S. over this 12-furlong trip at Goodwood July 29 was dropped out in rear early by James Doyle as Ballydoyle's outsider The Mediterranean (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) set a searching pace. Making up the margin with ease to take command approaching the furlong pole, the chestnut stayed on to secure a 1 1/4-length success from the long-time leader, with Youth Spirit (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) half a length behind in third. “When Yibir is like he was today and in the Bahrain Trophy, he is pretty straightforward,” Doyle said. “He drops his head and relaxes really well. We wanted to get the first part of the race right and then build away from there. It couldn't have worked out much better, really. He has won the Bahrain Trophy and stays very well, but he has got quite a potent kick.”

Yibir came back from a juvenile campaign which culminated in success in Newbury's prestigious Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions S. to run third behind Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in one of the strongest renewals of the G3 Sandown Classic Trial of recent times Apr. 23. Dropping his level when fourth in Chester's Listed Dee S. May 6 and when four-lengths second to the subsequent G1 Irish Derby runner-up Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in Goodwood's Listed Cocked Hat S. May 21, the imposing homebred was gelded and showed instant benefit by dominating the 13-furlong Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket's July festival before flopping again in the Gordon.

With William Buick on the G2 Queen's Vase winner Kemari (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), James Doyle was able to extend his tally to three-for-three on Yibir as that stablemate and another notable contender in High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) failed to fire. With the G1 Grand Prix de Paris fourth The Mediterranean and the Juddmonte International runner-up Alenquer upholding the form of the current hot favourite for that Doncaster Classic in Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), it may be this edition diverts from its usual guise as a font of St Leger candidates. Yibir, who is unable to line up in the final Classic, came from the back in a first-time hood here along with the Gordon runner-up Sir Lucan (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Youth Spirit and the race was ultimately run perfectly to suit.

Appleby is looking at a tilt at Belmont's GI Jockey Club Derby Sept. 18 with Yibir. “We've always held him in high regard, because he is such a powerful galloper in the mornings and I have to give a lot of credit to Shane Fetherstonhaugh, who rides him and all the team at home who have handled him,” he said. “The plan was always to leave the hood on today, bury him and get him racing the right way round. He is gelded, so we plan to have him around hopefully for the next few years and I thought it was important to get him racing back in the right manner. He is in the [Sept. 12] G1 Irish St Leger [at The Curragh], but one of our potential plans was to go to North America with him for the Jockey Club Derby. I think he would take a lot of experience there–he hasn't missed a beat this year and is a horse with some constitution. Hopefully, he can become one of those fun international campaigners. I'm disappointed with Kemari, as the drop in trip was not a concern beforehand and he didn't gallop out. We'll see if anything comes out in the wash.”

Yibir is the third black-type winner for the Listed Lord Weinstock Memorial S. scorer Rumh (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) alongside his G1 Nassau S., G1 Prix de l'Opera and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac-winning full-sister Wild Illusion (GB) and the Listed Montrose Fillies' S. scorer Really Special (GB) (Shamardal). Also a half to the G3 Prix d'Aumale runner-up Ceratonia (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), he is a grandson of the G3 Preis der Winterkonigin winner Royal Dubai (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}) connected to the GI Beverly D. heroine Royal Highness (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). Also from the family of the G1 Dubai World Cup and G1 Juddmonte International hero Electrocutionist (Red Ransom), Rumh's 2-year-old colt Wild Crusade (GB) is a full-brother to the winner and Wild Illusion while her yearling colt is by Golden Horn (GB).
