Walton Street, Desert Encounter Square Off in International

Walton Street (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), still lightly raced as a 7-year-old, is pegged as the 8-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday's GI Pattison Canadian International S. going a full circuit of the E. P. Taylor turf course at Woodbine. And if his current form is anything to go by, they might all be running for second prize money.

The bay gelding, Group 3-placed in France in 2019, closed an abbreviated 6-year-old campaign with a victory in the Listed Godolphin S. at Newmarket and resumed witha five-length tally in the Listed Dubai Racing Club Classic at this year's Dubai World Cup Carnival Jan. 21. He completed a three-bagger with a facile success in the G3 Dubai City of Gold S. on Super Saturday Mar. 6 and led into the final furlong of the G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic before yielding to finish fourth behind the world-class trio of Misriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) and Loves Only You (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who have since bagged Group 1s in England, Japan and Hong Kong, respectively. His latest third in the G1 Longines Grosser Preis von Berlin Aug. 8 looks strong as well, as the second home that afternoon, Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), took out the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden in his next start, defeating Godolphin's Passion and Glory (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), among others.

Desert Encounter (Ire) (Halling) looks to join Joshua Tree (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) as three-time winners of the International. Victorious here in 2018 and 2019 (the race did not take place last year), the 9-year-old has not seen the winner's circle in 15 starts since, but retains his zest for racing as evidenced by a trio of stakes placings this term, including a runner-up effort in the G3 Gordon Richards S. on seasonal debut in April. The bay was most recently second in the Listed August S. at Windsor Aug. 28 behind 3-year-old filly Teona (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who caused a 17-1 upset in the G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille Sept. 12. With Danny Tudhope unable to make the trip, Emma-Jayne Wilson has the call from trainer David Simcock.

Half of the eight-strong field prepped in the 10-furlong GIII Singspiel S. Aug. 21, in which Corelli (Point of Entry) came home 1 3/4 lengths to the good of English Conqueror (English Channel). A further length back in third was Belichick (Lemon Drop Kid), the 2020 Queen's Plate runner-up who counts the age-restricted Breeders' S. over this course and distance as his biggest career success.

Dubawi Colt A New Rising Star At Sandown

Godolphin's annus mirabilis shows no sign of halting, with Wednesday's “Breeders' Day” card at Sandown playing host to one of the operation's more promising juveniles seen out so far. Debuting over a mile on soft ground in the Time Test EBF Novice S., the Charlie Appleby-trained colt Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) streaked to a 6 1/2-length success to become the 16th TDN Rising Star by his sire sensation. Out of the G2 Lancashire Oaks and G3 Prix Minerve winner Pomology (Arch), the bay raced in second throughout the early stages under James Doyle behind another newcomer in the Andrew Balding-trained Wolsey (Kitten's Joy). Sent past that rival with under two furlongs remaining, the 2-1 favourite surged clear for an emphatic success, with Tying the Knot (Noble Mission {GB}) two lengths further behind in third. “We were on a fact-finding mission, rather than knowing exactly what he could do,” Doyle admitted. “He didn't begin all that well, but he was quickly into stride. He was very straightforward and he seemed to be a quick learner. We didn't go very quick, as we were mindful of these testing conditions, but I got him on the move around the two there and he stretched really nicely on that ground. His dam stayed very well and was a high-quality mare, so it gave us confidence that he would hit the line today.”

Appleby was thinking about the 10-furlong G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S. at Newmarket Oct. 9 for Goldspur. “I was pleased with that run. He is a horse that has got plenty of stamina in his pedigree there, so he will be a mile-and-a-half horse for next year,” he said. “Going forward, we look at stepping him up to a mile and a quarter and point him at something like the Zetland Stakes, as that will suit him. I'm very pleased that he is a big-margin winner, but soft ground has come into play for him there.”

Goldspur is the fourth foal out of Pomology, who raced for John Gosden and won her first four starts, including the aforementioned Minerve and Lancashire Oaks, before running second on what would be her career finale in the G1 Prix Vermeille of 2014. The stakes-winning second dam Sharp Apple (Diesis {GB}) also produced the listed-winning sprinter Tommy Taylor (Mizzen Mast) and Sassy Little Lila (Artie Schiller) who was runner-up in the GI Just a Game S. and GI American Oaks. From the family of the GI Turf Classic Invitational-winning sire Apple Tree (Fr) and the G3 Prix de Royaumont runner-up American Apples (Fr) (American Post {GB}), Pomology's 2021 filly is by Night of Thunder (Ire).

Family Way Finds Winner’s Circle In Ladies Marathon At Kentucky Downs

Family Way and Tyler Gaffalione stalked the pace throughout the 1 5/16-mile Ladies Marathon at Kentucky Downs, went wide on the final turn, and then split horses in the stretch to take the last stakes race at the Franklin, Ky., track's 2021 meet. La Lune was second and Big Blue Nation third.

Breaking from post seven, Family Way was away fastest, giving way to Stand Tall early and settling in behind horses. Stand Tall held the lead on the backside, with Blame Debbie in second and Big Blue Nation third. Going down the hill, Blame Debbie took over, with Stand Tall shuffling back to third, just ahead of Family Way.

Blame Debbie held her lead around the race's final turn into the stretch, but soon gave way to Big Blue Nation as Family Way split horses at the top of the stretch to find running room on the outside of Blame Debbie. Big Blue Nation tried to hold off a surging Family Way, but the filly caught her at race's end, hitting the wire a neck in front with La Lune surging past Big Blue Nation to take second. Favorite Luck Money was fourth.

Family Way paid $13.20, $6.80, and $4.80. La Lune paid $8.60 and $5.40. Big Blue Nation paid $3.60.

Bred in Kentucky by Diamond Creek Farm, Family Way is a 4-year-old filly by Uncle Mo out of the Giant's Causeway mare Susie's Baby. She is owned by Hunter Valley Farm, Debra O'Connor, and Marc Detampel, and trained by Brendan Walsh. Consigned by Godolphin, she was sold to Fergus Galvin, agent, for $181,818 at the 2020 Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale. With her win in the Ladies Marathon, Family Way has two wins in five starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of four wins in 11 starts for career earnings of $441,543.
