Caramel Swirl Rallies Late To Win Raven Run At Keeneland

Seventh in the field of eleven early, Caramel Swirl did not let traffic stop her from making a bid for the lead in the Grade 2 Raven Run. Over a fast track at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., the daughter of Union Rags went five-wide around the far turn to find racing room and outlast Joy's Rocket to win by a head.

Breaking cleanly from post eight, Junior Alvarado positioned Caramel Swirl toward the back of the pack early behind the leader Strong Silent and Cilla in second. Three-wide on the backstretch, traffic forced Alvarado to take his filly even wider on the far turn to find running room in the Keeneland straight. As Cilla took over the lead in the early stretch, Caramel Swirl and Joy's Rocket rallied to her outside. The two were head to head as they passed Cilla in late stretch, Caramel Swirl eking out a short lead as they approached the finish line.

At the wire, Caramel Swirl held the advantage over Joy's Rocket with Cilla in third. The final time for the seven furlongs was 1:23.42.

Caramel Swirl paid $8.60, $5.60, and $4.40. Joy's Rocket paid $19.60 and $10.40. Cilla paid $7.40.

Bred in Kentucky by owner Godolphin, Caramel Swirl is out of the Smart Strike mare Caramel Snap. She is trained by Bill Mott. With her win the G2 Raven Run, the 3-year-old filly has three wins in seven starts in 2021 for a lifetime record of 9-3-3-1 and career earnings of $317,300.

Medaglia d’Oro Filly Airs on Debut at Belmont

7th-Belmont, $90,000, Msw, 10-22, 2yo, f, 1 1/16m, 1:47.36, ft, 7 3/4 lengths.
NOSTALGIC (f, 2, Medaglia d'Oro–Been Here Before {SP}, by Tapit), scratched out of an intended unveiling here about a month ago, showed three easy breezes in the interim and was let go at 9-1 as her second-time-starting stablemate Handbelle (Tapit) took the most tote attention. The Godolphin homebred showed little early foot and sat far back in second last down the backside through splits of :24.02 and :48.50. She sliced through a seam and began to inch closer as longtime leaders Into Happiness (Into Mischief) and Saffron Moon (Malibu Moon) seemed to be separating themselves, and enjoyed an unencumbered fence run into the lane to sit third. Tipped out to take on the frontrunners, she powered to the front in midstretch and cruised away from there all by her lonesome. Into Happiness got the better of Saffron Moon for second. Handbelle never factored and checked in fourth. The winner, whose dam was second in the 2015 Caesar's Wish S. going a mile in the Laurel slop and hails from the extended female family of GISW Bob and John, was bred to Violence for 2022. Micheline And Her Special Stall Return To Keeneland For Dowager

Godolphin's Micheline, runner-up in the 2020 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1) Presented by Dixiana, is coming to Keeneland for another try over the turf course. The 4-year-old daughter of Bernardini out of 2007 Juddmonte Spinster (G1) winner Panty Raid is among the 10 fillies and mares entered for Sunday's $150,000 Rood & Riddle Dowager (G3).

Once again Micheline will have her special accommodations – a traveling stall of wood-lined farm gates with a fitted tarp for a ceiling – that is set up outside trainer Mike Stidham's barn. During her early training in Florida, Micheline was so claustrophobic that she was turned out in a paddock instead of residing in the barn. Before she relocated to Stidham's base at Fair Hill training center in Maryland, an outdoor stall was built.

“Whenever she leaves Fair Hill, her portable stall goes with her,” Stidham said. “She is happy and comfortable in that.”

The unique stabling is undeniably a success as Micheline has won five of 17 starts and earned $680,103. Except for her unplaced effort in Keeneland's Darley Alcibiades (G1) in 2019, Micheline has raced exclusively on turf.

In addition to being picky about her stabling, Micheline prefers a specific grass footing that is not too soft. In her most recent effort, she was a close sixth in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon (L) last month but encountered slight interference in the race that compromised her chances.

“It all has to do with the race track,” Stidham said. “As long as the grass is firm, she will run her 'A' race. She tried to do that at Kentucky Downs but everywhere she went through the stretch, she got stopped and had nowhere to go. And she only got beat a couple of lengths.”

Florent Geroux, who rode her in the Queen Elizabeth II Presented by Dixiana, is back on board from post position six in the Rood & Riddle Dowager.

Widely regarded as the world's most international bloodstock sale, the Tattersalls December Mares Sale has consistently featured major consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estates, and the three drafts catalogued for the 2021 renewal total 224 lots comprising 101 from Godolphin, 30 from Juddmonte Farms and 93 from the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's Shadwell Estates.
