Royal Scotsman Scoots To Richmond Triumph

Fitri Hay's Royal Scotsman (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}–Enrol {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) finished a close up third in Royal Ascot's G2 Coventry S. and justified odds-on favouritism with a snug victory over the same six-furlong trip in Thursday's G2 Richmond S. at Goodwood. Fourth behind the 'TDN Rising Star' display of Noble Style (GB) (Kingman {GB}) contesting a hot novice heat over five furlongs at Ascot in his May 7 debut, he graduated by five lengths over this course and distance 13 days later before his black-type debut in the Coventry last time. The 5-6 pick was well away to stalk the leaders in a handy fourth and raced under a firm grip through halfway. Shaken up passing the quarter-mile marker, he quickened for control approaching the final furlong and was ridden out in the closing stages to easily hold the Windsor maiden winner Al Karrar (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths in a new track-record time. Isa Salman Al Khalifa's Listed Rose Bowl S. winner Chateau (Ire) (Havana Gold {Ire}) ran on well to finish 1 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

“Royal Scotsman likes a bit of cover and switches off well,” commented trainer Paul Cole. “Our main worry was just getting some cover, but nothing could have gone better today and it all went exactly as we'd hoped it would go. Nothing worries him and he is a fantastic horse. There is the possibility of stepping up in trip, but he has a lot of speed and is out of a fast mare. I can't see anything around that has as much speed as him. There are very good races on the horizon such as the [G1 Prix] Morny and potentially York. I'm not good at making quick decisions. I've had two or three other great horses, but leading up to this race he gave me a better vibe. You're never certain, as anything can happen, but everything went well and I couldn't comprehend being beaten. If you're looking at the [G1] 2000 Guineas, good horses can win over a lot of trips and the way he behaves is very good. Whether he gets a mile or not I don't know, but he is bred for it.”

Winning rider Jim Crowley, remaining on a high plateau after the G1 Sussex S. success of Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), added, “Royal Scotsman had the best form in the book, his Coventry form has worked out well and he was unlucky that day as I was drawn one and got a bump. He still travelled very strongly today, he would be even better with a bit of cut in the ground, and it was a nice performance. If the gap had shut, I would have kicked myself for not going. He was always going nicely and, once we got inside the final two furlongs, it was all over really. He has a lot of speed and could be a horse for the [G1] Prix Morny. He is physically strong and has lots of speed. The more he learns to relax, he will be able to go further.”

Jim Hay, husband of owner Fitri Hay, continued, “That was thrilling and it's why we do it. Paul and Oliver [Cole] were as confident as you can be coming into Goodwood. This is a very tricky track and there are no shoo-ins. We love coming to Goodwood and had a lot of success here. Win, lose or draw here, you have a fantastic day. Royal Scotsman is a serious horse.”

“I am thrilled with his run on only his second start,” Tom Clover said of Al Karrar's second-place finish. “Experience has just caught him out there, as he was on and off the bridle the whole way. He hit the line really strong and galloped out. He has done everything bar win. He is a lovely horse with a lovely future. I think we have done the right thing coming here and to be second in a Richmond is pretty good. What is lovely for us is that he should improve for the experience. We have him in the [G2] Champagne S. [at Doncaster] and, whether we will go six furlongs or seven furlongs next time, I don't know. If we get a smooth run through the autumn, he is a lovely horse for next year.”

Jake Warren, advisor to Chateau's owner Isa Salman Al Khalifa, said, “He has run very well considering the tight turnaround from Newbury. He was a bit unlucky in running, he got caught on the rail and nearly had to start his race again at the halfway point. He has finished off really well. He is a lovely horse and we will try and find a nice race for him. We will look at the [G2] Gimcrack [at York] and the 2-year-old Pattern as it unfolds. Havana Golds tend to be sharp horses, he is a nice big-framed animal and one would have to think that it could be possible [to go up in trip] in time. We will see.”

Royal Scotsman is the latest of five live foals out of the dual stakes-placed Enrol (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), herself kin to Listed Golden Rose S. and Listed Boadicea Fillies' S. placegetter Enact (GB) (Kyllachy {GB). The April-foaled bay's Graded stakes-placed third dam Appointed One (Danzig) is kin to seven black-type performers headed by her multiple Group-winning full-brother Emperor Jones and G1 William Hill Futurity victor and dual Classic-placed British champion Bakharoff (The Minstrel).

Gleneagles’s Velocidad Powers To Curragh Triumph

Joseph O'Brien trainee Velocidad (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) took the eye when making an impressive winning debut tackling six furlongs at Fairyhouse last month and doubled up in style to claim a first black-type score over the same trip in Sunday's G2 Airlie Stud S. at The Curragh. Racing a shade keenly in second after breaking third of the four runners, the 85-40 second choice loomed large on the bridle at the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly once seizing control soon after to comfortably account for Coolmore and Westerberg's Yet (War Front) by 2 1/2 lengths. Even-money favourite and G2 Queen Mary S. placegetter Cheerupsleepyjean (Fr) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) was unable to land a telling blow and finished 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

“Declan [McDonogh] gave her a lovely ride, she's a good filly and won nicely,” said winning trainer Joseph O'Brien. “She's always shown a lot of speed at home, but she's from a staying family. Today she looked quick and she's a Group 2 winner now so whatever happens from here on in is a bonus. I suppose the [G1] Cheveley Park [S. at Newmarket] would be the longer term target. Gleneagles probably wasn't very fashionable last year, but he's a good stallion and trade is very fashion orientated.”

Velocidad, half-sister to a yearling filly by Adaay (Ire), becomes the sixth pattern-race winner for her sire and the first at group level for her dam. She is the fifth of six foals and one of two scorers produced by Astrantia (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who is a full-sister to MGSW sire Strategic Prince (GB) (Dansili {GB}). The February-foaled chestnut's granddam, MGSP Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial victrix Ausherra (Diesis {GB}), is a full-sister to MG1SW European champion Ramruma. Ausherra's descendants also include G1 Spring Champion S. heroine and G1 VRC Oaks placegetter Montefilia (Aus) (Kermadec {NZ}). Ausherra is a daughter of Princess of Man (Ire) (Green God {Ire}), who won the G3 Musidora S. and threw Listed Chester H. victor Royal Scimitar (Diesis {GB}). Princess of Man is also the second dam of G1 Caulfield Cup hero All The Good (Ire) (Diesis {GB}).

Gleneagles’s Loving Dream Wins The Ribblesdale

Passed over by Frankie Dettori and one of the outsiders for Thursday's G2 Ribblesdale S., Loving Dream (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) who carries the colours of Trevor Harris's Lordship Stud nevertheless held the John and Thady Gosden stable's bragging rights as she showed admirable toughness to upgrade her profile. Sent forward from her wide draw by Robert Havlin and avoiding the scrimmaging between keen-going fillies toward the rail as a result, the 18-1 shot stayed out of trouble tracking the leader Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) throughout the early stages. Committed at the top of the straight, the homebred who had been fifth in the May 8 Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial kept finding to score by 3/4 of a length from Shadwell's Eshaada (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), with Nicest (Ire) (American Pharoah) 1 3/4 lengths away in third. “She's a filly who likes to use her stride and so I committed to going forward,” explained Havlin, whose only prior Royal Ascot winner had come on the sire-of-the-moment Ardad (Ire) in the Listed Windsor Castle S. in 2016. We got a nice breather at the bottom of the hill and quickened from the four to the three and she kept finding and finding. It was a very gutsy performance.”

Off the mark on her second start over an extended mile on Wolverhampton's Tapeta in December, Loving Dream was sent to the same 10-furlong Wetherby novice Apr. 25 that the stable's eventual G2 Hardwicke S. winner Fanny Logan (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) had won two years earlier. No match for TDN Rising Star Noon Star (Galileo {Ire}) when second to that Juddmonte blueblood there, the bay had Sherbet Lemon (Lemon Drop Kid) back in fourth but was unable to land a blow on the latter when fifth in the May 8 Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial on soft ground. Bypassing the Oaks, she avoided the drubbing suffered by the likes of Divinely (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and may have benefitted as a result as she first saw off the latter on the front end before Eshaada closed in.

“It's great to ride another one, especially for the boss, and the filly has done well,” Havlin added. “I thought she was overpriced on the day and that has been proven to be so. It was soft ground the last day and I felt I was done for a bit of toe at Wetherby and was then keeping on again, so she was flying under the radar a little bit. Luckily we got a nice break and saved plenty for the straight.” John Gosden senior said, “Robert committed early and made best use of her stamina. Eshaada came late, everyone had a go but she's very game and very honest and it was a wonderful positive ride by Robert, it really was. Trevor and Libby [Harris] have been fantastic for the game and they've never given up and to go and win this race is pretty special.”

Loving Dream is a half-sister to the stakes winner and GI American Oaks third Amandine (GB) (Shamardal) out of the smart Kissable (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) who also scored at that level in the States having been third in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. Bought for 180,000gns at the 2013 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, she is a daughter of the unbeaten Kitty O'Shea (GB) (Sadler's Wells) who was not seen again after her impressive win in the Listed Park Express S. Also responsible for Danehill Dancer's listed-placed Kingdom of Munster (Ire), she is in turn a full-sister to the St Leger hero Brian Boru (GB) and a half to the multiple group winner Sea Moon (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}). The G3 Park Hill S.-winning third dam Eva Luna (Alleged) is also the ancestress of the G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning European champion Workforce (GB) (King's Best), the G1 Caulfield Cup, G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin-winning champion stayer Best Solution (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and the promising 3-year-old filly Petricor (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who was successful in the Listed Prix Finlande and runner-up in the G3 Prix Vanteaux this term. Kissable's unraced 2-year-old filly Five Stars (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was a 48,000gns purchase by Johnston Racing at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2, while she also has a yearling colt by Camelot (GB) and a colt foal also by Sea the Stars.
