Big Field Set for Bashford Manor

A wide-open field of 11 juveniles, including one filly, will line up for Saturday's GIII Bashford Manor S. at Churchill Downs.

The 3-1 morning-line favorite Glacial (Frosted) dueled free after a slow start to post a 2 1/2-length debut victory over the stakes-placed maiden Vodka N Water (Fed Biz) beneath the Twin Spires May 29. The $140,000 OBSMAR graduate, produced by an unraced half-sister to GISW Cupid (Tapit), is trained by Norm Casse.

Lansdowne (Super Saver), a half-brother to MGISW Midnight Lucky (Midnight Lute), led by five lengths at the stretch call en route to a front-running, 1 1/2-length debut victory for Dallas Stewart at Churchill May 22.

Winchell homebred Red Run (Gun Runner) became the first winner for his highly regarded freshman sire with a three-wide rally on debut in the Churchill slop May 9. Red Run is the first foal out of an unraced full-sister to champion 3-year-old filly and GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Untapable (Tapit).

Double Thunder (Super Saver) posted a field-best 60 Beyer Speed Figure for Todd Pletcher in a debut victory at Monmouth June 5.

Keeneland debut winner Shesgotattitude (Tiznow), drawn widest of all in post 11, takes on the boys for a second straight time for John Ennis following a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Juvenile S. in the slop Apr. 28.

Norm Casse Has Pair Of Talented 2-Year-Olds In Saturday Stakes

Trainer Norm Casse's talented 2-year-old duo of maiden winners Glacial and Ontheonesandtwos will compete against stakes company for the first time in Saturday afternoon's $150,000 Bashford Manor (Grade 3) and $150,000 Debutante (Listed), respectively, at Churchill Downs.

“We have some really nice 2-year-olds in our barn and these are two of them,” Casse said.

Glacial won his first-career start under jockey Joe Talamo. The son of Frosted completed 5 ½ furlongs in 1:04.99 and earned an 80 Brisnet Speed Rating. The gray colt will break from post No. 4 under Talamo as the 3-1 morning line favorite.

“Glacial's gate works really excited us,” Casse said. “He's quick from the gate and professional. I really like this horse. Compared to Ontheonesandtwos and (first-out maiden winner) Pretty Birdie, his numbers won't come back as strong. I think he probably ran the better race in his debut of the three. He got away from the gate poorly, rushed up on the rail and put away a horse that has run twice. And he did all of that comfortably and came back to the barn as if he's never raced. The main thing is I'm excited to see how he runs back. I didn't train them as hard going into their first race so I'd have to think they move forward going into their second race.”

In the Debutante, Ontheonesandtwos enters the race as the 5-2 morning line favorite with jockey Florent Geroux in the saddle. The Jimmy Creed filly cruised to a 1 ¾-length debut victory on May 13 at Churchill Downs at odds of 6-1.

“Ontheonesandtwos has worked three times since she's won,” Casse said. “She's a little bit different than Glacial. She's really forward and aggressive in her gallops. She's a sweetheart in the barn but on the racetrack she's down to business.”

The Debutante, run at six furlongs for 2-year-old fillies, will go as Race 8 at 4:22 p.m. while its counterpart, the Bashford Manor, will go as Race 9 at 4:55 p.m.

Norm Casse Has Pair Of Promising Juveniles For Tepin Connections

Trainer Norm Casse's promising 2-year-old maiden winners Glacial and Ontheonesandtwos are both targeting the Grade 3, $150,000 Bashford Manor and $150,000 Debutante, respectively, following their impressive debut victories at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

“Both horses have really touted themselves in the morning so we were expecting them to run well in their debuts,” Casse said. “After winning the way they did, I think it's reasonable to point them to the stakes races at the end of the meet.”

Glacial, a 2-year-old colt by Frosted who is owned by Robert Masterson, cruised to a rail-skimming 2 ½-length win Saturday in a $100,000 maiden special weight contest. Casse and Masterson have a long relationship outside of Glacial. Masterson campaigned two-time champion grass mare Tepin while Casse was the assistant to his father, Mark.

Tepin was purchased as a yearling by Masterson for $140,000 at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton August Sale with the help of bloodstock agent Deuce Greathouse.

Fast forward nine years, Greathouse was the agent who purchased Masterson's colt Glacial for $140,000 at the 2021 OBS March Sale and is the co-owner, along with Cindy Hutson, of 1 ¾-length debut winner Ontheonesandtwos.

Ontheonesandtwos, a chestnut filly by Jimmy Creed, bested five rivals in a $100,000 maiden special weight event on May 13.

“(Masterson and Greathouse) have supported me from the beginning,” Casse said. “We had a great relationship when I was the assistant to my dad. It's very special to now have two very quality 2-year-olds for them.”

The Bashford Manor and Debutante are two of seven stakes events on the undercard of the $600,000 Stephen Foster (GII). Nominations for all seven races close Saturday, June 12.
