Breeders’ Cup Mile Champ War Chant Passes Away In Australia

War Chant (Danzig), the winner of the 2000 GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs, passed away on Thursday, Apr. 11. Housed at Yarradale Stud in Western Australia, the 27-year-old stallion succumbed to old age at the Gidgegannup nursery that he had called home for over a decade, the breeder said in a Thursday release.

War Chant was bred and raced by Marge and Irving Cowan, and trained by Neil Drysdale. Out of MGISW Hollywood Wildcat (Kris S.), the homebred finished ninth in the GI Kentucky Derby and ended his racing career with a win later that year in the Breeders' Cup Mile. In seven starts he amassed earnings of $1,130,600.

Beginning his stud duties at Robert Clay's Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky in 2001, War Chant performed shuttle duty on occasion to Chile and Western Australia. In 2011, after prolonged negotiations, the late Ron Sayers managed to secure the Southern-hemisphere breeding rights for War Chant for the next three years.

Three years later, the sire relocated permanently to Western Australia following the breeding season. He was responsible for 46 stakes winners world-wide with 12 of those based down under.

The stallion was regularly used to educate young staff in the breeding barn. His professional manner while covering mares meant that he was the perfect teacher for the younger staff who were keen to perfect their handling skills.

“He had the three Ps–Performance, Pedigree and Physique,” said Davy Hanratty, Yarradale's Stud Manager. “His movie star good looks hit you first. He was a quirky devil at times but taught me to be a better horseman. We are very lucky he has built a terrific reputation as a broodmare sire, and rest assured, we haven't seen the last of his name in the record books.”

Karakontie’s Gainesway Stud Fee At $15,000

Gainesway stallion and GI Breeders' Cup Mile hero Karakontie (Jpn) (Bernstein) will stand for $15,000 LFSN, the farm said in a release Friday morning.

Bred and raced by the Niarchos Family, Karakontie campaigned in France, where he won a pair of group races at 2-year-old, including the G1 Qatar Prix Jean Luc Lagardere Grand Criterium. The future sire trained on as a 3-year-old to capture the classic G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains-French 2000 Guineas before traveling to Santa Anita for that Breeders' Cup win.

Karakontie continues to serve as one of the best value sires in Kentucky with runners like She Feels Pretty, who won the GI Natalma S. and placed in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf; Foreign Relations, winner of the GIII Louisville S. at Churchill; and Princess Grace, a multiple Grade II winner and multiple Grade I performer of over $1.8 million.

Also of note, Spendarella, winner of last year's GI Del Mar Oaks, GII Appalachian S., GIII Herecomesthebride S., and runner-up in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot, was runner-up in this year's GI Just A Game S. and GII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile S.

In the sales ring this year, yearlings by Karakontie hammered down for upwards of $525,000.

Respiratory Infection Knocks Paddington Out Of Breeders’ Cup Mile; Retired To Coolmore For 2024

The high-class miler Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Modern Eagle {Ger}, by Montjeu {Ire}), bound for Santa Anita's GI Breeders' Cup Mile, has instead been retired directly to Coolmore Stud for the 2024 breeding season due to an elevated temperature and a respiratory infection, the stud announced on Friday. A fee for the Aidan O'Brien trainee will be revealed later.

Bred by Dayton Investments, Ltd., the four-time Group 1 winner won his second start as a juvenile, and then proceeded to take his first six races at three, including the top-level Irish 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace S., Eclipse S. and the Sussex S. He was also third in York's G1 International S. A €420,000 Arqana October yearling, Paddington's record stands at 10-7-0-1 and $2,219,337 in earnings.

“To do what he did takes a very special horse,” said his trainer Aidan O'Brien. “In terms of his attitude and determination he was very similar to Giant's Causeway but Paddington was a much quicker horse. He had great tactical speed but could quicken off it. He's an unbelievable specimen who stands over an incredible amount of ground. He got physically stronger and heavier from race to race which is a very unusual thing in a thoroughbred.”

A half-brother to the multiple stakes-placed Masterpiece (Fr) (Mastercraftman {Ire}), Paddington is the fourth and last reported foal of his dam, the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit heroine Modern Eagle. Herself a half-sister to Listed Vintage Tipple S. heroine and G3 Loughbrown S. third Mighty Blue (Fr) (Authorized {Ire}), Modern Eagle is out of the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Millionaia (Ire) (Peintre Celebre). Millionaia, in turn, is a half-sister to two black-type horses, anchored by G1 Dewhurst S. second Fencing Master (GB) (Oratorio {Ire}), while their dam is G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Moonlight Dance (Alysheba). This is also the family of G1 Melbourne Cup bridesmaid Heartbreak City (Fr) (Lando {Ger}). French champion and dual Classic winner Madelia (Fr) (Caro {Ire}) is Paddington's great great granddam.

Mawj to Target Breeders’ Cup Mile

Godolphin's Classic winner Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) is expected to make her next start in the Nov. 4 GI Breeders' Cup Mile, according to trainer Saeed bin Suroor on Tuesday.

Unbeaten in four starts this season, the sophomore filly most recently came home a half-length winner over Lindy (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) in Keeneland's Oct. 14 GI QEII Challenge S.

“She's a tough filly with a big heart, to do that on her first run for five months and win a Grade I,” said Bin Suroor. “She had been doing well before the race and Oisin [Murphy] had been in to ride her and we knew she was well–she's come back well from the race too.”

In that nine-furlong test, she was making her first start since scoring in the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in May.

“When she beat Tahiyra (Ire) [Siyouni (Fr)] in the Guineas, they were a long way clear of the others–they are the best by a long way.”

He continued, “She will head to Santa Anita now for the Breeders' Cup Mile. If she stayed against the fillies, it would be a mile and a quarter and a mile is the best trip for her, she's proved that.

“Because she's a tough filly she stayed nine furlongs at [Keeneland] but the Mile is for her, she's a top-class filly. She's not very big so the two turns over a mile will suit her.”
