Ghaiyyath Tops Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings; Tiz The Law Co-Third Position

After another powerful performance, Ghaiyyath (IRE) [130] remains undefeated this year and retains his top position in the second edition of the LONGINES World's Best Racehorse Rankings for 2020.

Ghaiyyath is a perfect four-for-four in 2020, and he improved his rating to 130 in his last start, where he posted a three-length victory over Magical (IRE) [121] in the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1). One race prior, he defeated Enable (GB) [124] by 2 ¼ lengths in the Coral-Eclipse (G1), and he also beat Anthony Van Dyck (IRE) [121] by 2 ½ lengths in the Hurworth Bloodstock Coronation Cup Stakes (G1). Ghaiyyath started his season with an eye-catching performance in the Dubai Millennium Stakes Sponsored by Jaguar (G3), which he won by 8 ½ lengths at Meydan. The 5-year-old completed the 2000-meter contest in 2:00.33, setting a new track record in the process, before returning to Europe.

Meanwhile, Enable, who was the 2019 co-LONGINES World's Best Racehorse, returned to her winning ways in her next start and took the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes (G1) by 5 ½ lengths to earn her 124 rating. Most recently, she romped in the Unibet September Stakes (G3), which she won by seven lengths.

Sitting in second position is Palace Pier (GB) [126], who is undefeated in three starts this season. The 3-year-old has two Group 1 wins to his credit, after winning the St James's Palace Stakes (G1) by a length over Pinatubo (IRE) [122] and the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois (G1) by three-quarters of a length over Alpine Star (IRE) [120].

Persian King (IRE) [125] and Tiz the Law (USA) [125] have matched the rating of Stradivarius (IRE) [125], and the trio sits in co-third. Persian King has won the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (G1), Prix d'Ispahan (G1), and Prix du Muguet (G2) this season, while Tiz The Law improved his rating to 125 after taking the Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1). His previous top-level victories of the year came in the Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets (G1) and Curlin Florida Derby (G1).

Ghaiyyath Confirmed For Irish Champion

Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will line up for Saturday’s G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown after coming through a Thursday morning gallop in good order, according to trainer Charlie Appleby. This season’s G1 Coronation Cup, G1 Coral-Eclipse S. and G1 Juddmonte International winner is the favourite for the 10-furlong contest and will face five rivals including Ballydoyle’s Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) as well as this season’s G1 Prix Ganay victor Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}).

“It was a routine piece of work to check his well-being, and he has come through it without a worry,” Appleby said of Thursday’s move. “It was not a strong work, more a breeze, which is normal procedure three days before a race. He’s telling us that he’s ready now for another big race.

A recent relaxation in Irish quarantine rules for elite athletes means William Buick will be allowed to partner Ghaiyyath.

“We are really looking forward to the weekend,” Appleby added. “He travels to Ireland at the peak of his career, unbeaten in four starts this year, three of them Group 1s, two of which were officially rated the best performances globally in 2020. He’s now a 5-year-old and by any standards he is lightly-raced. He has run only 12 times, winning nine and placing twice. This is his fourth season in training, and I believe what we are now seeing is an outstanding racehorse at the top of his game.

“He’s going to Leopardstown in as good a condition as we have ever had him. I’m as pleased with him as I was before the Juddmonte International at York, where I thought he was very professional in the manner he went about everything.”

Doyle Picks Up Pinatubo Mount

James Doyle will renew his partnership with Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) in Sunday’s G1 Prix du Moulin at ParisLongchamp, which frees up William Buick to ride Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in next Saturday’s G1 Irish Champion S. should the 5-year-old take up that assignment.

As an elite sportsman, Doyle will need to quarantine for eight days upon returning to the UK from France and provide two negative COVID-19 tests. Ireland’s quarantine rules were adjusted on Thursday to allow jockeys to travel to the country to ride at Group 1 meetings, paving the way for Buick to ride Ghaiyyath.

“We are in a very privileged position to have two retained world-class jockeys in James and William,” said trainer Charlie Appleby. “We have looked at the logistics of it all and hopefully how it’s going to work out. James is going to France on Sunday to ride Pinatubo, who he knows equally as well as William. James rode him during the week and was very pleased with him. James also rides the 2-year-old on Sunday [Naval Crown in the G3 Prix la Rochette], so he’ll have two mounts. We have runners in France later in the week, but we’ll make a decision over the weekend on whether he’ll stay or come back and start his quarantine.”

Doyle rode Pinatubo in his first four starts last year, all wins, including the Listed Chesham S. and G2 Vintage S.

“I haven’t ridden him since Goodwood last year, so it will be great to get back on board,” Doyle said. “I sat on him on Wednesday morning and he seems in good shape. There’s only the six runners on Sunday, but I think they’ve won 14 Group 1s between them, so it’s a pretty strong renewal to say the least. It would be great to get that Group 1 win over a mile with him. I’ll be having a week off when I come back from France, but if any horse is worth it, you’d think it would be Pinatubo.”

Enable Has Come Forward Since Eclipse, Will Face Three Ballydoyle Rivals In Saturday’s King George

Superstar Enable will face three rivals in her bid to win an historic third King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. The champion racemare began her 2020 campaign with a second-place finish to Ghaiyyath in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse.

“I was very clear with everyone before Sandown that she had found it difficult to get to racing fitness since she is now a 6-year-old mare,” trainer John Gosden told racingpost.com. “She is a big powerful lady and certainly not of the neater, lighter-framed, type. She ran very well in the Eclipse and the race has had the desired effect of bringing her on.”

After declarations, only four runners stood their ground wit
h Enable taking on an Aidan O'Brien trio of Japan, Sovereign and 2019 Investec Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck.

Ryan Moore will ride Japan, while Oisin Murphy picks up the mount on Anthony Van Dyck and William Buick will ride Sovereign.

Enable would become the only horse to win three King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes with herself (2017,2019), Swain (1997,1998) and Dahlia (1973,1974) all on two wins currently.

More history could be made as Enable's evergreen jockey Frankie Dettori bids to equal Lester Piggott's record of seven victories in the prestigious Group 1.
