The Gerry Dilger Scholarship Foundation has granted one more scholarship for the upcoming 2022 breeding season, allowing University of Limerick student and Cashel, County Tipperary native Luke Kevin to travel from Ireland and work at Lane's End Farm.

“I would like to give a huge thanks to the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation for giving me this great opportunity to work and learn in the U.S.,” said Kevin, a third-year student in the Equine Science program who has gained prior experience at Ballysheehan, Martinstown and Ballinalard Studs.

“On behalf of the board I would like to thank Lane's End Farm for their generosity in accommodating Luke for the 2022 season,” said Erin Dilger. “We feel that he is a very deserving young person who will enjoy his Kentucky experience.”

Gerry Dilger Equine Foundation Awards Second Scholarship

The board of the Gerry Dilger Equine Foundation has announced that its second one-time only scholarship has been awarded to Roisin Whelan. She will receive a scholarship to the Irish National Stud for 2022.

Earlier this year, the foundation granted its first one-time only scholarship for a student enrolled in the University of Kentucky Equine Program.

The foundation has been so well supported by a multitude of donors worldwide, that it was in a position to grant extra scholarships. This particular grant was created to give an Irish citizen the opportunity to attend the world-renowned course in Kildare. The late Gerry Dilger graduated from the Irish National Stud program in 1977.

Originally from Milltown, County Kerry, Whelan came highly recommended to the board and were impressed by her early experience and enthusiasm having already worked on farms in Ireland and Australia since leaving school a few years ago. She has worked three breeding seasons at Coolmore Stud in Ireland and one season in Coolmore Australia. In addition, she did two seasons of yearling prep at Ashtown Stud in Ireland and has spent time with Ballydoyle Racing.

“I would like to sincerely thank you for providing me with this opportunity, it really means a lot and will help immensely over the cost of the program,” Whelan said.

“Roisin is such a deserving candidate and we are so happy to be able to provide this scholarship,” Erin Dilger said. “We wish her much success at the Irish National Stud this coming January.”

Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation Grants One-Time Award To Shelby DeVita

The board of the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce some exciting new developments to further expand opportunities for young people in the thoroughbred industry. Due to ongoing Covid travel restrictions, the 2021 Springhouse Farm recipients, Rachel Doran and Ciara Russell, were unfortunately unable to travel from Ireland to Kentucky. However, they will proceed with their placements at Springhouse next year, when hopefully world travel restrictions will have eased.

The board decided to grant an extra scholarship this year for a fourth-year student in the University of Kentucky Equine program. This one time only grant is for a semester's tuition for a student selected by the Foundation in the Equine Science program. The recipient of this grant will be California native Shelby DeVita, a senior majoring in Equine Science and Management at the University of Kentucky. Shelby has worked for Calumet Farm and is currently working as a tech at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. She is Vice President of the UK rodeo team and participates in roping and barrel racing competitions.

In addition, the board will grant another one time only scholarship for the Irish National Stud. Full tuition will be paid for an Irish citizen to attend the world renowned Irish National Stud program in 2022. Gerry Dilger graduated from this program in 1977 and it continues to provide a great educational opportunity for young people. The board will announce the recipient of this scholarship over the coming weeks.

Erin Dilger commented: “We are delighted to offer additional scholarships in memory of Gerry who supported and promoted so many equine industry participants over the years. Thank you to all our donors who make this possible.” The foundation also awards an annual Irish National Stud scholarship in partnership with KEMI.
