Irish Student Luke Kevin Named Dilger Equine Scholarship Recipient

The Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation with great donor support has granted several scholarships throughout 2021 for young people to further their experience and education in the bloodstock industry in the spirit of the horseman for which it is named.

The foundation board has announced that its final scholarship for the upcoming 2022 breeding season is being awarded to University of Limerick student and Cashel, County Tipperary, native Luke Kevin.

This particular scholarship affords Kevin the opportunity to travel from Ireland to work and learn at the renowned Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Ky.

Kevin is a third-year student in the Equine Science program t the University of Limerick and impressed the board with his ambition and the objectives he has already formulated at such a young age for his future intentions and development in the horse industry.

The scholarship recipient has gained experience in Ireland with Ballysheehan, Martinstown and Ballinalard Studs and is looking forward to embracing the Kentucky experience as he expands his worldwide knowledge of the horse business.

“I would like to give a huge thanks to the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation for giving me this great opportunity to work and learn in the U.S.,” Kevin said.

Erin Dilger commented, “On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Lane's End Farm for their generosity in accommodating Luke for the 2022 season. We feel that he is a very deserving young person who will enjoy his Kentucky experience.”

Gerry Dilger, a native of County Clare, Ireland, who operated Dromoland Farm near Ireland, died March 4, 2020, at the age of 61. A horseman who both pinhooked a Kentucky Derby winner (Nyquist) and bred one (Always Dreaming), Dilger also served as a mentor to numerous young men and women interested in establishing a career in the horse business.

Dilger Scholarship Foundation Places Another Student for ’22 Breeding Season

The Gerry Dilger Scholarship Foundation has granted one more scholarship for the upcoming 2022 breeding season, allowing University of Limerick student and Cashel, County Tipperary native Luke Kevin to travel from Ireland and work at Lane's End Farm.

“I would like to give a huge thanks to the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation for giving me this great opportunity to work and learn in the U.S.,” said Kevin, a third-year student in the Equine Science program who has gained prior experience at Ballysheehan, Martinstown and Ballinalard Studs.

Gemma Blumenshine Recipient of INS Scholarship From Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation

Gemma Blumenshine is the recipient of the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation's annual scholarship to the Irish National Stud in conjunction with the Kentucky Equine Management Internship (KEMI), the board announced on Wednesday. Blumenshine's profile and strong work ethic impressed the board as the candidate who was most deserving of the unique experience and opportunity to be a part of the Irish National Stud program in 2022.

Blumenshine, who grew up in Clovis, California, majored in Animal Science and minored in Diary Industries at California Polytechnic State University. She started riding and competing in hunters and equitation from the age of 11 and had already gained experience in training, schooling and lessons. In addition, Blumenshine trains off-track thoroughbreds to jump. She most recently gained more work experience in the thoroughbred industry through her KEMI placement at Castleton Lyons.

Claire Dilger said, “We are so proud of Gemma and excited to see all she will accomplish! Thank you to all our donors, and those who help keep my dad's memory alive.”

Blumenshine said, “I am so lucky to be a part of KEMI and to be recognized with the Gerry Dilger Irish National Stud Scholarship and am so grateful to his family.”

Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation Announces Two Further Scholarships

The Board of the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation has awarded two further scholarships for 2021 to a pair of Irish students studying Animal Science Equine at University College Dublin. Rachel Doran and Ciara Russell have each been awarded with placements at Gabriel and Aisling Duignan's Springhouse Farm in Lexington.

“I am honored to have been chosen alongside Ciara for this scholarship and it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get something like this,” said Doran, who works in a racing yard while studying towards her degree. “I hope to pursue a career in bloodstock and breeding and Springhouse Farm will definitely provide me with experience in that area and it will be amazing to learn from industry experts.”

Added Russell: “I feel so privileged to have been chosen for the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Award. I am very excited and look forward to gaining invaluable experience at Springhouse Farm in Kentucky.”

The Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship, named in honor of the late, beloved Central Kentucky horseman, seeks to “aid, promote and nurture the younger generation in the bloodstock business.”

“I am extremely grateful to all the donors that have generously contributed to establish this foundation,” said Erin Dilger. “It celebrates Gerry's memory and beliefs in such a positive way by helping young people progress and learn in the bloodstock business.”
