Weekly Rulings: May 3-9

Every week, the TDN publishes a roundup of key official rulings from the primary tracks within the four major racing jurisdictions of California, New York, Florida and Kentucky.

Here's a primer on how each of these jurisdictions adjudicates different offenses, what they make public (or not) and where.

CALIFORNIA
Track: Santa Anita

Violation: Lack of documentation proving pre-race examination
Explainer: Trainer Daniel Dunham is fined $300 for violation of California Horse Racing Board rule #1581.1 (b)(1) (Entries – Documentation not provided that Mr. Dunham's attending veterinarian conducted an examination 72 hours preceding entry to the race).

Penalty: Four-day suspension
Violation: Careless riding (reinstatement of original ruling)
Explainer: Having received notice from the California Horse Racing Board that the appeal of LATS Ruling #90 (April 15, 2022) has been withdrawn, the original ruling is reinstated. Jockey Ryan Curatolo is suspended for 4 racing days (May 13, 14, 15 & 20, 2022). Pursuant to California Horse Racing Board Rule #1766 (Designated Races), the term of suspension shall not prohibit participation in designated races.

Violation: Excessive use of the whip
Explainer: Jockey Emily Ellingwood is fined $500 for violation of California Horse Racing Board rule #1688(b)(8)(d) (Use of Riding Crop–more than six times) during the third race at Santa Anita Park on May 6, 2022.

KENTUCKY
Many of the following rulings were not posted on the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission website in time for inclusion last week.

Penalty: $500
Violation: Excessive use of the whip
Explainer: After a hearing before the Board of Stewards, Gerardo Corrales, who rode Cool Rags in the third race at Keeneland on April 24, 2022 is hereby fined $500 for his improper use of the crop by exceeding the allowable use in the overhand manner (2nd offense).

Date: 04/27/2022
Licensee: Declan Cannon
Penalty: Three-day suspension
Violation: Excessive use of the whip
Explainer: After a hearing before the Board of Stewards, Declan Cannon, who rode Hometown Hero in the first race at Keeneland on Apr. 24, 2022 was found to have violated the crop regulation. This being his first offense, Mr. Cannon was given the option and chose to serve a suspension. Declan Cannon is hereby suspended 3 racing days, April 30, May 3, and May 4, 2022 for his improper use of the crop by exceeding the allowable use in the overhand manner.

Licensee: Tyler Gaffalione
Penalty: $500 fine
Violation: Excessive use of the whip
Explainer: After a hearing before the Board of Stewards, Tyler Gaffalione, who rode Official Business in the first race at Keeneland on Apr. 24, 2022 was found to have violated the crop regulation. This being his first offense, Mr. Gaffalione was given the option and chose to pay a fine. Tyler Gaffalione is hereby fined $500 for his improper use of the riding crop by exceeding the allowable use in the overhand manner.

Gregory Romero is hereby suspended 4 racing days, May 11-14, 2022 (inclusive) for his improper use of the crop by exceeding the allowable use in the overhand manner.

Explainer: After being represented at a hearing before the Board of Stewards, Johan Rosado, who rode Fortune's Fool in the third race at Keeneland on Apr. 27, 2022 was found to have violated the crop regulation. This being his first offense, Mr. Rosado was given the option and chose to pay a fine. Declan Cannon is hereby fined $500 for his improper use of the crop by exceeding the allowable use in the overhand manner.

Licensee: Joseph Rocco Jr.
Penalty: $500 fine
Violation: Excessive use of the whip
Explainer: After being represented at a hearing before the Board of Stewards, Joseph Rocco Jr., who rode Thundering Crowd in the eighth race at Churchill Downs on Apr. 28, 2022 was found to have violated the crop regulation (2nd offense). Joseph Rocco Jr. is hereby fined $500 for his improper use of the crop by exceeding the allowable use in the overhand manner.

Penalty: $500 fine
Violation: Excessive use of the whip
Explainer: After a hearing before the Board of Stewards, Rene Diaz, who rode Formal Order in the first race at Churchill Downs on Apr. 30, 2022 was found to have violated the crop regulation (2nd offense). Rene Diaz is hereby fined $500 for his improper use of the crop by exceeding the allowable use in the overhand manner.

Morey, Anderson, Corrales Earn Turfway Park Titles For 2021 December Meet

Trainers William E. Morey and Susan L. Anderson tied for the title at the recently-concluded December meet at Turfway Park, while jockey Gerardo Corrales earned his third straight riding title at the Florence, Ky. track.

Susan L. Anderson is a stakes-winning trainer who has been training since 1987, according to Equibase. During the December meet, Anderson saddled five winners for a 29 percent strike rate. The training title was the cherry on top of Anderson's career year in 2021, with 34 wins and $541,446 in earnings.

William E. Morey is a multiple graded stakes-winning trainer who has been training since 2001. Morey had five wins in December and a 31 percent win rate. Since moving his stable to Kentucky in 2019, Morey has notched two titles at Turfway, in December of both 2020 and 2021. Morey also finished second to trainer Wesley Ward during the 2021 winter meet which lasted from January through early April. 

Gerardo Corrales began riding in the US in 2015. Corrales finished the December meet with 23 wins, 12 ahead of Rafael Bejarano. The December 2021 meet marks Corrales' third consecutive title at Turfway Park: he received the title for December 2020, the 2021 winter meet, and now December of 2021. The best year of Corrales' career thus far came in 2019, when he earned his first jockey title at Jack Thistledown Racino, won 192 races and earned $3,735,371.

Ballroom Blitz Victorious In Best Of Ohio Distaff At Mahoning Valley

Mahoning Valley Racecourse in Youngstown, Ohio hosted five $100,000 Ohio Thoroughbred Race Fund (OTRF) Best of Ohio stakes on Saturday, Oct. 30, and despite less than ideal weather conditions, these events gave racing fans a delightful afternoon of excitement.

Ballroom Blitz captured the first event, the Best of Ohio Distaff for registered Ohio-bred fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, besting six rivals handily over the one and one-eighth miles in 1:53.71 with jockey Gerardo Corrales in the irons. Bred and trained by Robert Gorham for owner Marion Gorham, this 3-year-old daughter by Alternation-Tangueray Miss, by Cowboy Call picked up her fourth career starts in 13 tries as the 4-1 choice, upping her career earnings to $152,215.

“This filly is relatively young and as with most of the 3-year-olds, she's been improving at this time of year,” said trainer Gorham. “The jockey gave her an excellent ride, so it was just a great day for her.”

Ballroom Blitz finished 7½ lengths ahead of 8-5 rival Sally Strong (Luis Rivera), with 7-1 High Fire (Luis Gonzalez) third.

Illegal Smile Takes Siena Purse At Keeneland

Hat Creek Racing's Illegal Smile (IRE) surged to the lead at the head of the stretch and cruised to a 1¼-length victory over Bullseye Beauty to win the $90,000 Siena Purse allowance for 3-year-old fillies at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky.

Ridden by Gerardo Corrales and trained by Wesley Ward, Illegal Smile covered the 5½ furlongs on a turf course labeled as good in 1:02.94.

Illegal Smile is an Irish-bred daughter of Camacho (GB) out of the Iffraaj (GB) mare Fine If (IRE). Now boasting a record of 10-2-4-1, Illegal Smile has earnings of $186,556.

Illegal Smile returned $7.80, $4.20, and $3.20 as the favorite in the field of nine. Bullseye Beauty, ridden by James Graham, returned $5 and $4.20 with Navratilova paying $3.80 to show under Julien Leparoux.
