Viadera’s Sister Gets Black Type At Tipperary

Sent to Wednesday's Listed Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Tipperary S. just a week after scoring on debut at Naas, Juddmonte's Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) was able to continue the momentum and gain a first black-type success in a race marred by the fatal breakdown suffered by Ballydoyle's Amalfi Coast (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}). Sent off the even-money favourite dropping back from six furlongs to five, the Ger Lyons-trained full sister to last year's GI Matriarch S. heroine Viadera (GB) pursued the early pace and after gaining the advantage passing the furlong pole asserted to score by 1 1/4 lengths from Misty Ayr (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}). Amalfi Coast was well beaten when sustaining the catastrophic injury near the line.

“We have obviously done very little with her and she actually put weight on since and was giving us all the signs she wanted to go back,” Shane Lyons said. “She did that very genuinely and Colin [Keane] loves her temperament. She'll mix and match it between five and six. She has an exciting future. This filly is smaller than Viadera, but has the same temperament and oozes class.”

The aforementioned Viadera captured the Listed Cairn Rouge S. and was runner-up in the G3 Anglesey S. for this stable prior to shipping Stateside to win the Matriarch and the GIII Noble Damsel S. The dam also produced Crossed Baton (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who took the Listed Blue Riband Trial and Listed Churchill S. and was runner-up in the G2 Grand Prix de Maisons-Laffitte, G2 Prix Eugene Adam and G3 Hampton Court S. The listed-winning second dam Quandary (Blushing Groom {Fr}) was also responsible for the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial winner Double Crossed (GB) (Caerleon) who is best known as the dam of the four-times group 1-winning European champion Twice Over (GB) (Observatory). Quandary is also the second dam of the group 1 heroines Passage of Time (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and Timepiece (GB) (Zamindar) related to the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp winner All At Sea (Riverman). Sacred Shield's yearling colt is by Camacho (GB), while she also has a foal full-sister to the winner and Viadera.

TDN Rising Star Tag For Dark Angel Colt

Thirty minutes after Ballydoyle's Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) earned TDN Rising Star status at The Curragh, there was another who filled the eye at that venue to also gain that tag in Peter Brant's newcomer Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Sent off the 5-2 second favourite for the six-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Race, the Ger Lyons-trained grey who cost 420,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 travelled with distinct ease in rear under Colin Keane with the pace hot throughout the early stages. Cruising between rivals to join the 7-4 favourite Elliptic (Ire) (Caravaggio) a furlong out, the son of the G3 Prix Eclipse winner Souvenir Delondres (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) drew away to inflict an impressive 2 1/4-length defeat on that filly who had been such a taking winner on debut at Tipperary in April. The experienced Joseph O'Brien-trained Hadman (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) was third. The winner is the third TDN Rising Star for his sire.

Colin Keane said, “He looks to be a nice horse and we were hoping he'd do something like that. He was very professional and very relaxed and I was struggling to pull him up after the line, which is usually a good sign. They went good and hard and it was all hands and heels from a furlong from home–I just like the performance in general. He had shown plenty at home, to be fair, and the boss has been patient with him, stopping and starting, but the horse was getting bored and so we decided to run him. He is very relaxed and I'd say that will sharpen him up a good bit as he's so quiet.”

Shane Lyons, assistant to Ger, added, “He's a lovely horse and is after doing that very well. He took it in very well beforehand and during the race he was very professional. We'll take him home and see how he comes out of the race. He will improve, as today was his first day seeing grass. Most likely the next race will be the [June 26 G2] Railway Stakes–the Siskin route.”

Dr Zempf is the third foal out of the aforementioned Souvenir Delondres, who was also successful in the Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge and third in the G3 Prix d'Arenberg as a 2-year-old. Her first was Dancin Inthestreet (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) who was third in last year's Palace of Holyroodhouse H. at Royal Ascot, while she also has a yearling filly by Kingman (GB). A half to the Listed Land O'Burns Fillies' S. third I'm So Glad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}), she is connected to the dual listed scorer and G3 Prix de Seine-et-Oise runner-up Terroir (Ire) (Fairy King) and the GII Schuylerville S. and GIII Astoria Breeders' Cup S. winner Distinct Habit (Distinctive Pro).

Irish EBF Ballyhane S. Boasts 278 Entries

The €200,000 Irish EBF Ballyhane S., run at Naas on Aug. 2, has 278 juveniles entered after the latest forfeit stage, Naas Racecourse announced on Friday. Restricted to juveniles that are EBF eligible and whose sire established a median price of not more than €75,000 at the 2020 yearling sales, the race's winning breeder will receive a free nomination to one of the Ballyhane sires courtesy of Ballyhane Stud. In addition, if the winner is by a Ballyhane Stud stallion, there is a €50,000 bonus on top of the €200,000 purse. The next forfeit stage is on June 23.

Trainer Ger Lyons has several juveniles still entered in the Ballyhane S., including two by Ballyhane resident Elzaam (Aus).

“The Irish EBF are brilliant as the primary sponsor of Irish racing,” said Lyons. “Everyone in Irish racing should be very thankful to them for that.

“I will always want to have entries in a race like the Irish EBF Ballyhane Stakes with such a substantial pot. I'm only too happy to back it because it is beneficial to our owners in the long term.”
