Mr. Big Relocated to Legacy Ranch

Successful California-bred sire Mr. Big (Dynaformer–Fashion Delight, by Fappiano) has been relocated to Pete and Evelyn Parrella's Legacy Ranch in Clements, Ca. He most recently stood at Rancho Temescal in Piru, Ca. for a $4,500 fee. His 2022 stud fee will be announced at a later date.

“We thoroughly enjoyed standing Mr. Big at Rancho Temescal and watching his foals find great success in 2021,” stated Tim Cohen President of Rancho Temescal. “We have decided to stop breeding and foaling going forward, Rancho Temescal will continue to provide care for all our clients, while leaving the niche of breeding and foaling to larger farms in California. We will continue to support Mr. Big at Legacy Ranch.”

“Myself and my staff led by farm manager Terry Knight look forward to the 2022 breeding season with Mr. Big added to our stallion roster that also includes leading sire Clubhouse Ride and the hot freshman sire Straight Fire,” added Pete Parrella.

Stretch Punch Gives War Like Goddess Victory In Keeneland’s Closing Day Bewitch

George Krikorian's favored War Like Goddess rallied from off the pace in impressive fashion to capture the 59th running of the $150,000 Bewitch (G3) on closing day of Keeneland's Spring Meet in Lexington, Ky. Ridden by Julien Leparoux for trainer Bill Mott, she finished 3¾ lengths ahead of stablemate Delta's Kingdom and won the 1½-mile race in 2:29.21.

War Like Goddess gave Mott, a member of the Racing Hall of Fame, his fourth victory in the Bewitch following Heatherten (1984), Gaily (1989) and Miss Lenora (1993).

In the Bewitch, Three Flamingos led the field through fractions of :24.46, :49.73, 1:15.96 and a mile in 1:41.73 while War Like Goddess raced far back in the field of 11 older fillies and mares.

Leparoux swung War Like Goddess five-wide in upper stretch, and the filly charged past the leaders to take command of the race.

The victory was worth $90,000 to War Like Goddess, a 4-year-old daughter of English Channel out of Misty North, by North Light (IRE). The Keeneland sales graduate, who was bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm, has won four of five career races and earned $246,184. On March 27, War Like Goddess won the 1 3/8-mile Orchid (G3) at Gulfstream Park in her last start.

War Like Goddess paid $4.60, $3.40 and $2.80. Delta's Kingdom, who was ridden by Luis Saez, paid $5.60 and $3.40. Pass the Plate, who finished a neck behind in third with Rafael Bejarano aboard, returned $4.80.

Kalifornia Queen (GER) finished a neck behind in fourth and was followed in order by Dalika (GER), Domiga, Three Flamingos, Margaret's Joy, English Affair, Court Return and Cambeliza.

Bill Mott (winning trainer of War Like Goddess): “That is her natural way of running (from off the pace.) She has developed very nicely. As a 2-year-old, she was kind of a spindly little girl but she has filled out, gotten stronger and is very professional. She loves (this) distance and she loves the course. Today was her day.”

Julien Leparoux (winning rider): “I wanted to make sure I kept my position (early in the race). She was traveling very good for me. I felt like I was a winner the whole way around. When I asked her, she kicked on very nicely.”

Mucho Unusual Named Cal-Bred Horse of the Year

George Krikorian's homebred Mucho Unusual (Mucho Macho Man), winner of last year's GI Rodeo Drive S., was named California-bred Horse of the Year for 2020 during Monday's annual awards presentation by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. The mare was also named the state's champion older female and turf horse.

Other Cal-bred champions announced during Monday's teleconference were: Big Fish (Mr. Big) and Good With People (Curlin to Mischief) (tied for 2yo male); Governor Goteven (Govenor Charlie) (2yo female); El Tigre Terrible (Smiling Tiger) (3yo male); Warren's Showtime (Clubhouse Ride) (3yo female); Galilean (Uncle Mo) (older male); Fashionably Fast (Lucky Pulpit) and Sneaking Out (Indian Evening) (tied for sprinter).

Reddam Racing's now-pensioned Square Eddie was California champion sire by earnings, winners, turf earnings and 2-year-old earnings and Reddam Racing was champion breeder by earnings.

Warren's Veneda (Affirmative), dam of Warren's Showtime, was named broodmare of the year. Steve Miyadi was named trainer of the year.

Mucho Unusual Named California’s 2020 Horse Of The Year

Grade 1 winner Mucho Unusual was named California-bred Horse of the Year for 2020 during Monday's annual awards presentation by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

Mucho Unusual is a 5-year-old mare by Mucho Macho Man, out of the Unusual Heat mare Not Unusual, was bred by owner George Krikorian and is trained by Tim Yakteen.

She has career earnings of $862,715, of which $317,333 were earned in 2020 when she scored her greatest career triumph in the Sept. 26 Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita. She also won the G3 Robert J. Frankel Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 27. The former California Cup Oaks winner has placed in nine graded stakes.

The other finalists for Horse of the Year, in alphabetical order, were Bulletproof One and Warren's Showtime.
