Oscula Does It Again At Deauville

Few horses can defy a penalty in a pattern race at somewhere like Deauville, but few are built like Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) and the stalwart of the Nick Bradley Racing syndicate was at it again on Monday when beating off smart rivals in the G3 Prix de Lieurey. Now the proud bearer of four black-type titles, the George Boughey-trained 3-year-old was under an extra three-pound burden having conquered Goodwood's G3 Oak Tree S. over seven furlongs July 27 which had been her fourth outing during the month.

Out for the second time subsequently, the bay who had taken the G3 Prix Six Perfections at last year's Deauville August meeting was settled in the cat-bird seat early by Ryan Moore and looked in trouble passing two out as the question was asked once again. Finding plenty in customary game fashion, the 11-2 shot battled ahead of By All Means (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) inside the last 100 metres to score by a neck, with Samahram (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) who had been an unlucky third behind the winner in the Oak Tree holding every chance this time but finishing in the same spot, another half a length away with no excuses.

“She's a remarkable filly–she's only had the saddle on her back four times inbetween runs, but she's so tenacious and I don't think I'll ever train another horse as gutsy as her,” Boughey said. “She had to travel 12 hours in this heat and she's an advert for Nick Bradley–he wanted to run where I possibly might not have–and for everyone at home, but she was so fresh the other morning I had to put her on the box and bring her. She's very good around a bend, so I'd like to go for the Foret–they would go a good gallop and it can come up soft for that.”

Since debuting last May, Oscula has also won the Listed Eternal S. at Carlisle and Epsom's Woodcote S. and been placed in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac at ParisLongchamp, Newmarket's G2 Rockfel S., this venue's G2 Prix du Calvados and Ascot's G3 Valiant S. and G3 Albany S. as well as three listed races. The dam Bisous Y Besos (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) is a half to the dual listed-placed Coeur d'Amour (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) related to the G2 Mill Reef S. scorer and G1 Golden Jubilee S. runner-up Galeota (Ire) (Mujadil), the G3 Sirenia S.-winning half-siblings Brown Sugar (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and Burnt Sugar (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), last year's G2 Mill Reef S. winner Wings Of War (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who was third in Saturday's G2 Hungerford S., and the classy sprinting half-siblings Darkanna (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Logo Hunter (Ire) (Brazen Beau {Aus}). Boughey also has charge of her unraced 2-year-old colt Apex (Ire) (Kessaar {Ire}), who was bought by Highclere for €100,000 at the Goffs Orby, while her yearling colt by Prince Of Lir (Ire) was purchased for €60,000 by Robson Aguiar at the Goffs November Foal Sale and is catalogued in next month's Orby.

Galileo Gold’s Oscula Pounces Late For Oak Tree Triumph

Making her fourth start of the month, Nick Bradley Racing's battle-hardened bargain buy Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}–Bisous Y Besos {Ire}, by Big Bad Bob {Ire}) went postward for Wednesday's G3 Whispering Angel Oak Tree S. at Goodwood coming back off a narrow defeat in Ascot's July 23 G3 Valiant S. and pounced late to secure a second pattern-race success in the seven-furlong distaffers' test. Last year's G3 Prix Six Perfections victrix and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac third snagged June's Listed Eternal S. at Carlisle before hitting the board in the July 2 Listed Coral Distaff at Sandown and the July 9 Listed City Plate S. at Chester in her penultimate start. The 10-3 favourite was swiftly into stride and raced a shade keenly early before settling into a rhythm along the rail in third. Shuffled down to fifth in the home straight, she regained ground under pressure to go second entering the final furlong and kept on relentlessly in the dying embers to nail 66-1 outsider Internationalangel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by a head on the line.

“Oscula is a real flagbearer for Nick Bradley, who is a big supporter of the yard, and she was a huge part of our team last year,” said trainer George Boughey after claiming a first Glorious Goodwood winner. “I did have my doubts about whether she would come back this year and I'm not sure how many times she's run already this year, but she's a real star and just keeps trying. My girlfriend Laura rides her out, so it is a special success. She has run four times in July and I think she is peaking here. She is by Galileo Gold, who is dear to our hearts, and it means a lot. She is remarkable and puts her weight back on within 24 hours [of racing] and she is a real star. I have her entered in a Group 3 in France in a couple of weeks, but she would have a penalty now. The long-term aim is the [G1] Prix de la Foret, as she loves soft ground.”

Runner-up Internationalangel's rider Adam Kirby commented, “I thought I had put it to bed, but I just bumped into one on the day. She is a very special filly for the owner [Laurence Holder] and for the yard. She has run with full credit. She had a long winter on the All-Weather, but she has had a break and is in very capable hands, so hopefully she keeps on improving.”

Reflecting on the performance of Samahram, trainer Francis-Henri Graffard said, “I thought Samahram would have enough pace to use her good draw [in five], but she could not keep her position. When I saw where she was, I thought she needed a lot of luck in running. I knew she had the quality to quicken, but Frankie [Dettori] said he got stopped twice. You come here and want to win, she is a nice filly and that is the most important thing. I really like this place and really want to win a race here. We need luck and she will have her day.”

Oscula, kin to the unraced 2-year-old colt Apex (Ire) (Kessaar {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Prince Of Lir (Ire), is the second of four foals and lone performer out of a half-sister to Listed Silken Glider S. and Listed Rothesay S. placegetter Coeur d'Amour (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Descendants of her multiple-winning third dam Refined (Ire) (Statoblest {Ire}) include G2 Mill Reef S. scorer and G1 Golden Jubilee S. second Galeota (Ire) (Mujadil), last term's G2 Mill Reef S. winner Wings Of War (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), dual Group 3 scorer Brown Sugar (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), G3 Sirenia S. victor Burnt Sugar (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and stakes-winning G3 Prix de Cabourg second Darkanna (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Boughey Boost as Hoo Ya Mal Handed Leger Mission Before Shipping to Australia

An exciting career awaits in Australia but, before Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) joins Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott down under, he will be prepared by George Boughey for an ambitious tilt at the St Leger at Doncaster.

Trained by Andrew Balding to split Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) at Epsom, Hoo Ya Mal was subsequently snapped up by his new connections for a whopping £1.2million at the Goffs London Sale.

While races like the Melbourne Cup are what Hoo Ya Mal was bought to run in, his new owners feel there could be unfinished business in Britain, and have entrusted Boughey with training the colt for the final Classic of the year at Doncaster.

Boughey told SBK, “It's very exciting to have a horse like Hoo Ya Mal in the yard. His work has been good and we are looking at the Gordon S. next before a possible tilt at the St Leger, before he heads to Australia with Gai Waterhouse for the Carnival out there.”

Henry Cecil Open Weekend Returns in September

Following a record 2021 season, the Henry Cecil Open Weekend will be held Sept. 17-18 at Newmarket. Each September, racing and equine enthusiasts descend on British racing's headquarters for a behind-the-scenes look at Britain's best-known racing yards. Last year featured several training yards, including George Boughey and Harry Eustace, Charlie Fellowes, James Ferguson, Roger Varian and Simon & Ed Crisford. The highest number of yards opened to the public in 2021, and record crowds raised £60,000 for the event's chosen charity partners. The 2022 Henry Cecil Open Weekend will continue to support the racing industry and its workforce whilst also supporting the local community.

Money raised this year will be donated to the long-term charity partner and main beneficiary Racing Welfare, as well as the National Horseracing Museum, Newmarket Day Centre and the Newmarket Heath Ambulance, a fundraising initiative to purchase a quick response unit for work riders on Newmarket Heath.

“Last year we saw huge numbers of visitors to Newmarket during the Henry Cecil Open Weekend. It was fantastic to see and for everyone to experience all that our town has to offer,” said Charlie Fellowes, Chairman of The Henry Cecil Open Weekend. “A huge thank you must go to all those who continually support the event and enable the Open Weekend to happen. A particular thanks to all the trainers, racing staff, volunteers and participants, without whom the event would not be possible.”
