Half to Jean Gros Tops Fasig April Digital Sale

Broodmare Wrong Color (Gemologist) topped the Fasig-Tipton April Digital Select Sale, which closed Tuesday. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent II as hip 4, the stakes-placed earner of $122,838 was picked up by Anglo Saxon Bloodstock for $400,000. Having produced a War Front colt this term who was not part of the offering, the 6-year-old was sold on a Mar. 22 Caravaggio cover.

The mare's stock has risen of late as her 3-year-old half-brother Jean Gros (More Than Ready) capped a three-race win streak in the Apr. 9 G2 New Zealand Trophy in Japan. He is expected to next contest the G1 NHK Mile Cup. Bred and campaigned by Blackstone Farm, Wrong Color is also a half to MGSW millionaire Tom's Ready (More Than Ready).

The second-priciest lot of the digital auction was 3-year-old racing/broodmare prospect Power Surge (Straight Fire), who was last seen belying 76-1 odds to take the Evening Jewel S. for Cal-breds Apr. 9 at Santa Anita. Consigned by her trainer Blaine Wright as hip 22, Power Surge fetched $370,000 from Samantha Siegel's Jay Em Ess Stable.

“Timing is everything. We had the right horse to sell–a filly by a hot sire, just won a stake, good looking and with clean vetting. All too often this update is lost waiting for a sale,” said Jason Litt, who was one of the partners in Power Surge. “The Fasig-Tipton Digital auction platform gave us exposure to the top buyers from around the world and our filly didn't miss any training and got to sleep in her own stall. I would encourage anyone with the right horse to sell on the platform.”

Siegel said, “The digital format was seamless and easy to use, and the bidding process was exciting!”

“We were very pleased with the April Digital Sale,” said Leif Aaron, Fasig-Tipton Director of Digital Sales. “We are continuing to grow and seeing new clientele. It was great to see the spirited bidding in California and we are happy for both Samantha Siegel and the partners in Power Surge.”

Would-be topper Philanthropic (Malibu Moon) was a $590,000 RNA. Offered with her Not This Time filly foal at her side, the stakes-placed 6-year-old from the immediate family of Curlin was offered back in foal to another in-demand young stallion in Constitution. Philanthropic was consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock as hip 12.

In total, 15 horses changed hands for gross receipts of $1,664,000 at an average of $110,933.

The next Fasig-Tipton digital sale, a dispersal of the late Glen Todd's Thoroughbred holdings, will open Wednesday, Apr. 27 and conclude May 3.

Timing Right for Horologist in Allaire Du Pont

Horologist (Gemologist) aims to collect her sixth career stakes victory in Friday's GIII Allaire du Pont S. at Pimlico. The du Pont returns to its traditional spot on Preakness weekend after being moved to late December because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Transferred to trainer Bill Mott last summer, the New Jersey bred kicked off her tenure with the Hall of Famer with a score in Monmouth's GIII Molly Pitcher S. in July before finishing third in Churchill's GI La Troienne S. in September. Victorious in the Oct. 4 GII Beldame Invitational S., the bay tired to ninth in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland Nov. 7, but rebounded to take Aqueduct's Top Flight Invitational S. Apr. 10.

Horologist can give Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his second du Pont victory, following Ajinia–1997's champion 3-year-old filly– in 1998.

Brad Cox enters Friday's nine-furlong contest with the pair of Dreamalildreamofu (Commissioner) and Getridofwhatailesu (Ghostzapper). The Elkstone Group's Getridofwhatailesu won the Jan. 23 Pippin S. at Oaklawn before finishing third in the GII Azeri S. won by 2020 GI Kentucky Oaks-winning stablemate Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil). In her latest start, she finished fourth behind the front-running Letruska (Super Saver) with Cox-trained two-time champion Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) second in the Apr. 17 GI Apple Blossom S.

“She's a stakes-winner and hopefully we can make her a graded-stakes winner,” Cox said. “She's doing great, and probably is going to get a little class relief. No Letruskas or Monomoy Girls in this group.”

Full of Run Racing's Dreamalildreamofu exits a narrow triumph in the eight-furlong Latonia S. over Turfway Park's all-weather surface in March. A winner on all three surfaces, she is making her graded-stakes debut Fridy.

“Dreamalildreamofu is coming off a synthetic race,” Cox said. “She's performed well on three different surfaces–turf, dirt and synthetic. So, we have options with her.”

Robert and Lawana Low's Spice Is Nice (Curlin) is seeking her first career stakes win in the du Pont, a race her trainer Todd Pletcher won with Pool Land (2006), Super Espresso (2011) and Stopchargingmaria (2015).

Second in Gulfstream's GII Davona Dale S. following a 12-length debut triumph early in 2020, the chetsnut won an optional claiming allowance at Belmont later in July before running sixth the following month in the 10-furlong GI Alabama S., in what turned out to be her seasonal finale. She returned to win a 8 1/2-furlong optional claiming allowance at Keeneland Apr. 9, her first start in nearly eight months.

“She had a nice allowance win at Keeneland. The timing is good for this,” Pletcher said. “She's a nice filly that had a good break and came back well from it. So, we're making the step back into the graded stakes ranks and feel good about the way she is doing.”

Horologist Makes Successful Return From Layoff In Top Flight Invitational

Three-time graded stakes winner Horologist recaptured her 2020 form in notching a comeback triumph in Saturday's 80th running of the $100,000 Top Flight Invitational, a nine-furlong test for older fillies and mares at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the New Jersey-bred daughter of Gemologist is owned by There's A Chance Stable, Medallion Racing, Abbondanza Racing, Parkland Thoroughbreds, Paradise Farms Corporation and David Staudacher.

Last season, Horologist put together a successful 4-year-old campaign which earned her New Jersey Horse of the Year honors. Her accomplishments included triumphs in the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher at Monmouth Park and the Grade 2 Beldame Invitational at Belmont Park, where she finished ahead of graded stakes winners Point of Honor and Dunbar Road. Horologist capped off her prosperous season in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland when ninth to Monomoy Girl.

Off the five-month respite, Horologist broke sharply from post 5 but allowed Grade 3 Comely victress Mrs. Danvers to dictate terms into the first turn. Jockey Junior Alvarado kept Horologist one path to the pacesetter's outside in second through easy opening fractions of 24.72 for the quarter-mile and 49.55 for the half-mile over the fast main track.

Around the far turn, Horologist inched her way up to even terms with Mrs. Danvers and put up a furious bid when asked. Jockey Kendrick Carmouche started getting busy aboard Mrs. Danvers, who was a persistent customer toward the inside. Just outside the eighth pole, Horologist put a nose in front and never relinquished, taking her 5-year-old debut by one length in a time of 1:52.14.

It was another neck to Sonata Stable's Lucky Stride, last-out winner of the Nellie Morse at Laurel Park, who was compromised at the start but produced a late-closing effort to complete the trifecta.

Queen Nekia, Thankful and Flashndynamite completed the order of finish.

The victory was a fifth overall stakes win for Horologist, who defeated her Garden State-bred counterparts in the 2019 Smart N Classy and Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks for former trainer John Mazza.

Returning $4.00 as the even-money favorite, Horologist upped her lifetime earnings past the three-quarter million mark to $770,439 and a record of 21-8-2-4.

The win was a third stakes triumph of the 11-day Aqueduct spring meet for Mott and Alvarado, who previously teamed up with Modernist in the Grade 3 Excelsior as well as Grade 3 Distaff Handicap winner Paris Lights who, like Horologist, also was making her first start of 2021.

“Coming off the layoff, this track is very tiring and I didn't want to be on the lead and have someone putting pressure on me the whole way,” said Alvarado, who was aboard Horologist for her Beldame Invitational triumph. “It took me a little bit to get her settled, but when she settled on the backside, I knew it was good. When she [Mrs. Danvers] came back to me, I knew we were good after that. Turning for home, I had to ask her a little bit, but it's not easy coming from a layoff on this track going a mile and an eighth. She really tried. I was pretty happy with the way she did it. She was the class of the race.”

Carmouche said Hall of Fame trainer Shug McCaughey left the ball in his court in terms of setting the pace.

“Shug said I could do either way; if I wanted the lead or if I wanted to sit off it,” Carmouche said. “I figured coming out of there, I'd see what happens. If I let Junior have the lead, it was going to be too easy, and I'd rather do it than have him do it. The filly ran well. She fought back gamely it was just a better horse beat us today.”

Bred by Holly Crest Farm, Horologist is out of the Stephen Got Even mare Cinderella Time.

Live racing resumes Sunday at Aqueduct with a nine-race card featuring the $100,000 Plenty of Grace for fillies and mares going one mile over the inner turf. First post is 1:20 p.m. Eastern.

Reduced Fees for Acadiana Equine @ Copper Crowne’s Stallion Trio

Louisiana’s Acadiana Equine @ Copper Crowne announced Friday reduced 2021 stud fees for Gemologist (Tiznow), Court Vision (Gulch) and Astrology (A.P. Indy). The trio represents three of the top six sires in Louisiana.

“For obvious reasons we want to provide Louisiana breeders some relief and give them a better opportunity for profitability in the future,” said stallion manager David Tillson.

Gemologist, who has led the Louisiana sire list for the last two years, will stand for $4,000, down from $4,500 for 2020. Court Vision, sire of 2019’s Eclipse-winning 2-year-old colt Storm the Court, will stand for $2,500 after standing for $3,500 last year. And finally, Astrology, who stood for $4,000 in 2020, will be available for $2,500 in 2021.
