Galileo’s Joan Of Arc Too Strong In the Guineas Trial

Making all in Sunday's G3 Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial over a mile at Leopardstown, Ballydoyle's Joan of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was in the process becoming a sixth pattern-race winner from seven foals for Coolmore's remarkable You'resothrilling (Storm Cat). Last seen finishing sixth in the seven-furlong G3 Ballylinch Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial at this track Apr. 11, the full-sister to Gleneagles (Ire) set an honest tempo under Ryan Moore and stayed on strongly to deny Flirting Bridge (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) by 1 3/4 lengths on a day when racing prominently seemed to offer an advantage. The 11-4 favourite also maintains her dam's 100% record of producing group performers, with the year-older Vatican City (Ire) the only one not to score in that company although he was second in the 2020 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas.

Sovereign Makes U.S. Bow in Man O’ War

Tabor, Magnier and Smith's Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), winless since a blowout score in the 2019 G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, makes his first start on these shores in Saturday's GI Man O' War S. at Belmont Park.

Second to dual Cartier Horse of the Year Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth for Aidan O'Brien at Ascot last July, the 5-year-old enters off a close third in the Bahrain International Trophy Nov. 20.

The rail-drawn, 8-5 morning-line favorite kicks off his campaign for Chad Brown, who also secured the 2014 GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S. with Minorette (Smart Strike) for the Coolmore partners.

“We received him over the winter at Payson Park and he's settled into a nice work pattern,” Brown said. “He came over very sound, and in great shape from Aidan. He sure trains like a horse with a lot of quality. I've seen him train on firm ground in Florida and he's fine with it. He can handle some cut in the ground.”

Brown continued, “I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel with him, so if he has speed, I wouldn't take that away from him. He's pretty forward in his breezes. He grabs the bit and goes on. If he breaks well and Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] wants to put him on the front, I would be happy with that.”

The field of eight also includes the talented Gufo (Declaration of War). His sophomore campaign was headed by a win in the GI Belmont Derby Invitational S. Oct. 3 and a close third, beaten just a neck, behind the talented Domestic Spending (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute) in the GI Hollywood Derby last out Nov. 28.

Domestic Spending, of course, returned to dead-heat for a win in the GI Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic S. on the GI Kentucky Derby undercard with the latter right there in a close third.

Galileo’s Armory Clear Best In the Huxley

Like Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) on Thursday, Ballydoyle's Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) also got his campaign off to a flyer on Chester's “Roodee” 24 hours later with a smooth success in the G2 Melodi Media Huxley S. Settled last of the four who tackled the extended 10-furlong contest, last year's G3 Royal Whip S. winner, G1 Cox Plate runner-up and G1 Irish Champion S. third swept around the outside to take over a furlong out en route to a three-length defeat of Sangarius (GB) (Kingman {GB}). “He is a very good colt with a lethal turn of foot,” Ryan Moore said of the 6-5 favourite. “It was a steady pace and a messy race, but he has such a big change of gear he could overcome that.”

One of the best of his stable at two, Armory had won Leopardstown's G3 Tyros S. and The Curragh's G2 Futurity S. and placed in the latter venue's G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at ParisLongchamp. Fourth in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas back at The Curragh last June and in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup also there in July, the bay has turned things around from that point and Aidan O'Brien is confident there is more to come. “He's really matured and has an unbelievable turn of foot,” he said. “He's done very well over the winter, he had a lovely run in Australia last year but things didn't really work out for him so we're delighted. We were thinking after this he might go for the [May 23 G1] Tattersalls Gold Cup or the [June 16 G1] Prince of Wales's [at Royal Ascot], but probably the latter. He has plenty of pace, but we always thought he'd get 10 furlongs.”

The dam After (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) descends from De Stael (Nijinsky II) whose descendants include the champion grass mare Wandesta (GB) (Nashwan) and sprinting sire Deportivo (GB) (Night Shift). A smart performer over six and seven furlongs, placing in the G3 Ballyogan S., G3 Anglesey S. and G3 Brownstown S., her first of five foals by Galileo was the useful handicapper Bond Street (Ire) while her third is the stable's 3-year-old maiden colt HMS Seahorse (Ire). A daughter of the GI Garden City Breeders' Cup-placed Noahs Ark (Ire) (Charnwood Forest {Ire}) who also produced the listed scorer Temps Au Temps (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), her 2-year-old daughter of the Coolmore great is as-yet unnamed, while her 2021 progeny is a colt.

High Definition Possible For Dante

G1 Cazoo Derby favourite High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) could be re-routed to next Thursday's G2 Dante S. at York after unsatisfactory blood work ruled him out of Saturday's Listed Derby Trial S. at Lingfield.

“His blood count didn't come back proper–his SAA [Serum Amyloid A] was very high and that is usually an indication of inflammation or infection somewhere, but we couldn't find either anywhere in his body,” O'Brien told Sky Sports Racing. “He scoped perfect this morning. Maybe it was just one of those things, but we'll do his bloods every day going forward and see. He's in the Dante and we'll see what happens over the next few days.”

O'Brien admitted it would be difficult to send High Definition to Epsom without a prep race.

“For us, we need to be getting out, because with the travelling you'd like a bit of time between their first and their second run,” he said. “The Dante normally is a little bit close to the Derby, but there's a little bit longer this year and that is probably what we'll look at. He'll have to improve every day and go forwards. If they [bloods] all came back normal and it had settled down then it's very possible. Realistically you couldn't go to the Derby without a run.”

O'Brien likewise confirmed that Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), fourth as the favourite in last weekend's G1 1000 Guineas, is on course for the G1 Cazoo Oaks.
