Half-Sisters To Poetic Flare And Mother Earth For Goffs Orby

Half-sisters to both of this year's Guineas winners in England have been catalogued for the Goffs Orby Sale, which takes place on Sept. 28 and 29.

A total of 444 yearlings-all of which will be eligible for the Goffs Million, Europe's richest 2-year-old race, in 2022–have been assembled for Ireland's Premier Yearling Sale, which returns this year to its usual home at Goffs's Kildare Paddocks.

Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire})'s half-sister from the first crop of U S Navy Flag will be consigned as lot 120 by Clare Castle Stud, three lots after the half-sister to Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) (lot 117), who is by another Coolmore first-season sire in Sioux Nation and is offered by Whitehall Stud. Mother Earth is herself an Orby graduate, having cost MV Magnier €150,000 in 2019.

Others with Classic connections in the catalogue include a Kingman (GB) filly (lot 29) out of champion 2-year-old filly and dual Guineas winner Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr Greeley) and a Saxon Warrior (Jpn) half-sister to G1 Prix de Diane scorer Channel (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) (lot 110). Both Finsceal Beo and Channel are also Orby graduates. Saxon Warrior is also the sire of a colt (lot 397) out of the recently deceased Cassandra Go (Ire), who is the dam of Classic winner and Group 1 producer Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and Group 1 producer Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). Lot 347 is a full-brother to champion and Classic winner Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and a half-brother to G1 Coronation S. winner Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}).

Leading sires Frankel (GB), Galileo (Ire), Siyouni (Fr), Lope De Vega (Ire), Dark Angel (Ire), Dubawi (Ire) and Sea The Stars (Ire) are all represented. There are six catalogued by the late, great Galileo including a filly who is the first foal out of the GI Frizette S.-winning $3-million mare Nickname (Scat Daddy) (lot 152) and a colt out of the dual Group 1 winner and multiple stakes producer Simply Perfect (GB) (Danehill) (lot 242). Lot 408 is a full-sister to G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. winner Persuasive (Ire) and a half-sister to this year's G3 Jersey S. winner Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), while lot 289, also by Dark Angel, is a full-brother to group winner Angel's Hideaway (Ire).

Lot 338 is a Kingman (GB) colt out of champion mare and stakes producer Alexander Goldrun (Ire) (Gold Away), while lot 250, also a Kingman colt, is the first foal out of the stakes-winning and Group 1-placed Snowy Winter (Elusive Quality). Kingman's barnmate Frankel (GB) has four catalogued including lot 377, a half-brother to two group winners and from the family of the Group 1-winning siblings With You (GB), Call The Wind (GB) and We Are (Ire). Lot 216 is a Starspangledbanner (Aus) half-brother to this year's G1 Prix Jean Prat scorer Laws Of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}).

The lure of the Goffs Million should put an added premium on 2-year-old types, and the Goffs Orby catalogue includes a Footstepsinthesand (GB) half-brother to last year's G1 Phoenix S. victor Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) (lot 196); a full-sister to this year's G2 Queen Mary S. winner Quick Suzy (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) (lot 247); a Kodiac (GB) three-quarter sister to this year's G2 Norfolk S. winner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) (lot 214); and a Footstepsinthesand half-brother to last year's Norfolk winner The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) (lot 167). Also catalogued are siblings to 2021 2-year-old stakes winners Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {Ire}), Beauty Inspire (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and Agartha (Ire) (Caravaggio), as well as a Belardo (Ire) half-brother to last year's G2 Gimcrack S. winner and G1 Middle Park S. third Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) (lot 168).

Juddmonte and Rosemont Partner on a Three-Quarter Brother to Frankel

Juddmonte's dual listed-placed Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), out of their undefeated superstar Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire})'s half-sister Joyeuse (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), will continue his racing career in Australia, after a deal was reached between the late Prince Khalid's operation and Rosemont Stud, the Victorian-based stud announced on Tuesday. The deal marks the first time Juddmonte have ever entered into an Australian partnership on a stallion prospect.

“Myself, John [O'Shea] and his assistant trainer Tom Charlton have a spent a great deal of time analysing Maximal, his form, profile and feel he shapes as an ideal prospect for not only some initial targets in the spring but beyond with races such as the G1 Doncaster or G1 Cox Plate over the next 12-18 months appealing as potential options,” said Rosemont Principal Anthony Mithen.

“Unsurprisingly, Juddmonte have been a pleasure to deal with and whilst we have both very much partnered in this horse with a focus on his future racing career, as a ¾ brother to Frankel, one can't help contemplate his appeal as a stallion if indeed he can replicate his European form in Australia.

“Frankel is the greatest I have seen and, with the passing of Galileo, has arguably assumed the title of the 'current world's best stallion' so we certainly dream at the thought of cementing his credentials as a shuttle stallion for Juddmonte and Rosemont.”

A winner at Sandown at two, Maximal had placed second in the Listed Dee S. at Chester in May prior to running a good fourth to Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in the G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot in June. He was most recently second to Friday's G3 Bonhams Thoroughbred S. victor Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. at Newmarket on July 8. The bay, previously trained by Sir Michael Stoute, will entered quarantine immediately for Australia with long term goals the premier middle-distance races Down Under.

“Juddmonte are extremely excited about sending Maximal to Australia to continue racing in partnership with Rosemont Stud,” said Juddmonte's GM of European Racing Barry Mahon. “Rosemont, like Juddmonte, run a top class breeding and racing operation out of Victoria and they have enjoyed enormous success throughout Australia. Juddmonte have enjoyed some success in the past few seasons in Australia and that has spurred us on to try and increase our racing presence there. We would like to thank Sir Michael Stoute and his team at Freemason for the great job they have done with Maximal. John O'Shea is a top class trainer and we are delighted he will be taking charge of the colt.”

Maximal is the third black-type placer of three runners out of Joyeuse, herself a two-time stakes winner and placed four times at the Group 3 level. He is preceded by G1 Coronation S. third Jubiloso (GB) (Shamardal) and the two-time listed placed Jovial (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Added O'Shea of the 3-year-old colt, who will continue to race in the Juddmonte silks, “Maximal has a lovely cruising speed and his video is evident of a horse with a real determination. He is an incredibly exciting colt for some of our major Group 1 and signature races at anywhere between 1400m-2000m.

“We have seen the strength of the European form stand out in this country and this colt's recent performances, with a Racing Post Rating of 112, would suggest he will be extremely competitive in anything we set him for here in Australia within his ideal distance range.”

Half to Almanzor Debuts at Kempton

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Diane Nagle, Coolmore and Westerberg's newcomer faces quality opposition in what will probably be a hot maiden also featuring Zhang Yuesheng's Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a Jessie Harrington-trained half-sister to the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S., G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero and sire Novellist (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}).

NATASHA (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is one of two debutantes for her owner-breeder George Strawbridge, with the John and Thady Gosden combination in charge of this March-foaled half-sister to the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 English and Irish Champion S.-winning sire Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Also carrying the famous white-and-green is Speak (GB) (Sea the Moon {Ger}), a May-foaled daughter of the G3 Prix Miesque winner Lixirova (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}) who hails from the Andrew Balding stable replete with talented juveniles this term.

Stars Abound In Final Galileo Crops

Two weeks removed from his death at age 23, Galileo (Ire)'s influence was keenly felt in Europe's feature races this weekend. At Ascot, Adayar (GB)-by Galileo's greatest son Frankel (GB)-became the first horse to do the Derby/King George double since Galileo himself accomplished the feat 20 years ago. On the same card, Godolphin's €260,000 Arqana Select purchase New Science (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) stamped himself a 2-year-old to watch with victory in the Listed Pat Eddery S. He is out of a Galileo mare.

Up North at York, horses from the Galileo sireline took up four of the five spots in the starting gate for the card's featured G2 York S., and they filled the first four spots home, too, with Australia (GB)'s Bangkok (Ire) denying Frankel's Juan Elcano (GB) and Mohaafeth (Ire) in a tight finish and Galileo's Armory (Ire) further back in fourth.

With the yearling sales right around the corner, owners, too, will be eagerly anticipating the catalogue releases to see which progeny of Galileo might be on the market. First up is the Arqana August Yearling Sale, where there are four on Aug. 15 and 16, including Haras de Montaigu's half-sister to Derby winner Wings Of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi {Ire}).

The Galileos that show up at public auction, of course, will represent just a small percentage of his 2021 yearling crop, which numbers 100. Some of the standouts of that very deep group include colts out of six-time American Grade I winner and $5-million mare Abel Tasman (Quality Road), the mare's first foal; Again (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), the Classic-winning dam of three stakes horses by Galileo; Dialafara (Fr) (Anabaa), the dam of Classic winner Capri (Ire) and two other stakes horses by Galileo; Pikaboo (GB), the dam of Galileo's 2020 champion 3-year-old filly and 2021 G1 Prince of Wales's S. winner Love (Ire); Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), the first foal for the four-time Group 1-winning mare; Godolphin's Oaks winner and stakes producer Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}); champion 2-year-old filly and 2.1-million gns purchase Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}); dual Group 1 winner Amazing Maria (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}); five-time Grade I-winning hurdler Annie Power (Ire) (Shirroco {Ger}); G3 Albany S. winner Different League (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}) and G2 Queen Mary S. winner Heartache (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), both purchased by Coolmore at auction for seven figures; and Penchant (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), the dam of Group 1-winning sprinter and sire Garswood (GB).

A number of those mares returned to the 12-time champion sire the following season, a book that resulted in 87 foals this spring. Producing Galileo colts this year were Amazing Maria, Different League, Hazariya, Legatissimo, Meow, Tiggy Wiggy and Quiet Reflection, while Again, Jacqueline Quest, Mecca's Angel, Penchant and Alpha Centauri foaled fillies.

Triple Group 1 winner Wild Illusion (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) produced a Galileo filly this year as her first foal, and she was the lone mare for Godolphin in Galileo's penultimate book. Sheikh Mohammed sent two mares the year prior, and has six homebred 2-year-olds by Galileo.

Other black-type mares to produce their first foals, by Galileo, this year included Fleeting (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Signora Cabello (Ire), who both had fillies.

Other noteworthy mares to produce foals by Galileo this year include G2 Queen Mary S. scorer Acapulco (Scat Daddy), who had a colt; Group 1 producer Beauty Is Truth (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and her daughter Fire Lily (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), who both had colts; Chintz (Ire), who produced a full-sister to dual Group 1-winning miler The Gurkha (Ire); Danedrop (Ire) (Danehill), who foaled a half-brother to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. victress Danedream (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}); Devoted To You (Ire), whose colt is a full-brother to G1 Irish Derby winner Sovereign (Ire); Kheleyf's Silver (Ire), who produced a half-brother to Tiggy Wiggy; American champion Lady Eli (Divine Park), who produced a colt; Palace (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who foaled a full-brother to this year's one-time Derby favourite High Definition (Ire); Peter Brant's $3.6-million mare Quidura (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who foaled a colt; Red Evie (Ire) (Intikhab), whose filly is a full-sister to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and GI Breeders' Cup Turf winner Found (Ire) as well as Best In The World (Ire), dam of this year's top 3-year-old filly Snowfall (Jpn) and Divinely (Ire), who hit the board in both the English and Irish Oaks; Strawberry Fledge (Kingmambo), whose colt is a half-brother to Group 1 winner and two-time Arc placegetter Cloth Of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}); and Coolmore's $8-million G1 Queen Anne S. winner Tepin, who foaled a filly.

The steady march of summer into autumn means that we are likely to soon starting seeing what the latest crop of Galileo 2-year-olds has in store. Galileo has had eight starters from his current crop of juveniles with three placed including Minding (Ire) and Empress Josephine (Ire)'s full-sister Tuesday (Ire), who split Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire})'s full-sister Discoveries (Ire) and last weekend's smart maiden winner Mise Le Meas (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) when second at The Curragh on June 25. Galileo's 2018 book of mares was, naturally, as star-studded as ever, and other siblings to Classic winners gearing up for their debuts include Toy (Ire), the eighth foal and eighth Galileo out of the remarkable producer You'resothrilling, and therefore a full-sister to Classic winners Gleneagles (Ire), Marvellous (Ire) and Joan Of Arc (Ire); Downing Street (Ire), a full-brother to last year's Derby winner Serpentine (Ire); Twinkle (Ire), a full-sister to the prior year's Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck (Ire); One Way (Ire), a full-sister to Classic winner and Group 1 producer Misty For Me (Ire) and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac scorer Ballydoyle (Ire); and Gulliver's Travels (Ire), a half-brother to G1 Irish Oaks winner Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and exciting 3-year-old filly Philomene (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and full-brother to Group 1 winner Magic Wand (Ire) who cost Coolmore €2-million at Arqana last summer.
