Half to Tepin Debuts at Gowran

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Wednesday's Insights features Cologne, a half-brother to Tepin.

5.20 Gowran Park, Mdn, €13,000, 3yo/up, 8fT
COLOGNE (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is the 10th foal out of Life Happened (Stravinsky), whose claim to fame is being the dam of the accomplished Tepin (Bernstein), heroine of the G1 Queen Anne S. and GI Breeders' Cup Mile among others. Also a half-brother to the dual Grade II scorer Vyjack (Into Mischief), the March-foaled bay represents Westerberg, Magnier, Tabor and Smith and Ballydoyle along with the fellow unnraced colt Middlemarch (Ire) (Caravaggio), whose dam is a full-sister to the stable's G2 Royal Lodge S. winner Mohawk (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Wordsworth Tests Cup Credentials

One of Ballydoyle's most idle performers, the talented Wordsworth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) gets to go over two miles for the first time on Wednesday as he warms up for the Royal meeting in Ascot's G3 Longines Sagaro S. While the G1 Grand Prix de Paris runner-up and G1 Irish Derby third hardly quickens the pulse with his dour galloping style, the full-brother to Kew Gardens (Ire) could be a G1 Gold Cup horse through-and-through and we will know more after his encounter with the 2020 G1 Prix du Cadran heroine and 2021 Gold Cup runner-up Princess Zoe (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}) here. The card also features the G3 Merriebelle Stables Commonwealth Cup Trial, or Pavilion S. as it is registered, where the G2 Railway S. winner and GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint runner-up Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) pits his wits against the G2 Mill Reef S. one-two Wings of War (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Hierarchy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and a dark one in Shadwell's TDN Rising Star Ehraz (GB) (Showcasing {GB}).

Deneuve Takes The Eye In “Alpha Centauri” Maiden

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Monday's Observations features a daughter of MGSW & G1SP Actress (Ire) (Declaration of War).

4.45 Naas, Mdn, €16,000, 2yo, f, 5f 205yT
DENEUVE (IRE) (No Nay Never) debuts in the maiden won in recent times by the subsequent Group 1 winners Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Fairyland (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and is the first foal out of the dual group 3 scorer and G1 Phoenix S. third Actress (Ire) (Declaration of War). Coincidentally runner-up in this to Alpha Centauri in 2017, her May-foaled daughter represents the same Ballydoyle stable whose two recent winners earned 'TDN Rising Star' status.

6.45 Naas, Mdn, €12,500, 3yo, f, 10fT
CHAMPAGNE (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) makes her debut for Ballydoyle in Susan Magnier's pink second-string silks, but is as significant a blueblood as has been seen so far in 2022 as a daughter of the famed Red Evie (Ire) (Intikhab). The June-foaled full-sister to Found (Ire) and Best In the World (Ire) encounters another newcomer of note in Vimal Khosla's Fennela (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), a Jessie Harrington-trained half-sister to Lord Shanakill (Speightstown) and Galileo's Forever Together (Ire) and Together Forever (Ire).

Galileo’s Kyprios Another Ballydoyle Star At Navan

Navan's Saturday card belonged to Ballydoyle and Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was a key component of the stable's five-timer when taking the Listed Vintage Crop S. Entering this G1 Gold Cup pointer something of an unknown quantity, having been absent since being withdrawn from Royal Ascot's G2 Queen's Vase in June when getting upset in the stalls, he had previously been successful in a 10-furlong Cork conditions race in April and fourth in the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial in May. Returning with a vengeance to inflict a heavy defeat on his full-sister and fellow Moyglare representative Search For a Song (Ire) and the smart Baron Samedi (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}), the chestnut set out on the road to the Royal meeting's marathon feature June 16. Always travelling easily tracking the leader, he was committed three out and when his dual Irish St Leger-winning full-sibling came to him soon after he knuckled down and drew clear for an impressive success.

Aidan O'Brien, who was completing a black-type treble on the card, commented, “We always thought he was going to be very nice. He went to Ascot last year and jumped out under the stalls and he hasn't run since then. He looks like a stayer with a bit of class, he relished that trip. He relaxes and he quickens. If we are going to Ascot, we could have a look at the [G3] Saval Beg [at Leopardstown May 13]. We might not travel him before Ascot, but we will see.”

Kyprios is Moyglare royalty, being the last known foal out of the stellar producer Polished Gem, whose other seven black-type winners other than Search For a Song include the G1 Prince of Wales's S.-winning sire Free Eagle (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), the seven-times group scorer Custom Cut (Ire) (Nonowcato {GB}) and the G2 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. winner Sapphire (Ire) (Medicean {GB}). Polished Gem, whose two other black-type winners by Galileo are Amma Grace (Ire) and Falcon Eight (Ire), is a full-sister to the GI Matriarch S. heroine Dress To Thrill (Ire) with both being out of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas winner Trusted Partner (Affirmed), who is also the third dam of the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. hero Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}).
