Blue Diamond Stud’s Group 1 Producer Pearling Passes At 17

Pearling (Storm Cat–Mariah's Storm, by Rahy), the dam of triple Group 1 winner and stallion Decorated Knight (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), passed away this week, Imad Al Sagar's Blue Diamond Stud announced on Tuesday. The 17-year-old, who was set to return to Frankel this season, foaled a Frankel (GB) filly this week, the stud confirmed to the TDN.

“Very sad to lose Pearling this week,” the stud tweeted. “She was one of the first mares to join Blue Diamond and gave us a true star in Decorated Knight. She leaves a lasting legacy with us and we are lucky to have three of her daughters.”

Bred by Pacelco in Kentucky, she ran second in two starts Stateside, and was offered by Highclere Stud during the 2011 Tattersalls December Mares Sale in foal to Galileo. She brought 1.3 million gns from Tony Nerses on behalf of Saleh Al Homaizi and Al Sagar who ran Blue Diamond Stud jointly at that time. The foal she was carrying was Decorated Knight. Put back through the ring at the 2018 edition of that sale also in foal to Galileo to dissolve their partnership, she hammered for 2.4 million to Blue Diamond Stud Farm UK, which is now operated solely by Al Sagar.

She also has the winning Ambrosia (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who went to WinStar for 1.3 million gns at Tattersalls December that year. In total, Pearling produced seven foals, with her latest pair the 5-year-old mare Blue Diamond (Ire), a full-sister to Decorated Knight, and filly Haute Couture (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who arrived in 2021. Blue Diamond was offered at the 2018 Tattersalls December Foal Sale, and was picked up by Blue Diamond for 1.7 million gns.

A full-sister to six-time Group 1 winner and 'Iron Horse' Giant's Causeway who would go on to stallion success in America, Pearling is also a full to outstanding producer You'resothrilling, a dual group winner. The latter has seven black-type winners to her name, led by dual Classic winner and sire Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Making Waves: No Concrete Fears For Smart Filly

In this new semi-weekly series, the TDN takes a look at the notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column, Feb. 11-17, is highlighted by the victory of Manhattan Jungle (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) in the Sweet Life S. at Santa Anita Park on Feb. 11.

No Concrete Fears For Smart Filly

The best performance of the week was Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Manhattan Jungle adding to her resume in the Sweet Life S. going down the hill at Santa Anita. A three-quarter length winner for trainer Michael McCarthy, the 3-year-old filly was second in the Blue Norther S. on New Year's Eve.

One of seven black-type winners for her Rathasker-based sire, Manhattan Jungle is the best of a trio of winners from just five runners in America. Her sire's best progeny is undoubtedly G1 Nunthorpe S. heroine Winter Power (Ire), and he stands for €6,500 this year.

Bred by Patrick Headon of Wraymount Stud and a €20,000 Goffs Sportman's Sale yearling buy by Lemos De Souza and his partner, trainer Amy Murphy, the filly made her first two starts winning ones in France for Murphy, De Souza and co-owners Daniel Macauliffe and Anoj Don in April. Stepped up to listed company, the result was the same in Vichy's Prix des Reves d'Or, but the silks were different, as by this point Aron Wellman's Eclipse had snapped up Manhattan Jungle and left her in Murphy's care.

Although she found the waters too deep in Royal Ascot's G2 Queen Mary S., Manhattan Jungle was only a length back in second to the future G1 Prix Morny third and G1 Middle Park S. second The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire})–a full-brother to crack sprinter Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire})–in the G3 Prix de Cabourg on Aug. 2. Fourth in the Morny, and back in the placings after setting the pace to be third in the G3 Prix Eclipse on Sept. 17, the Murphy trainee was unplaced in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland after a busy season in November and transferred to McCarthy.

Her dam, the Acclamation (GB) mare Skylight (Ire), won once in six starts, taking out the one-mile Selling S. over the Lingfield all-weather for trainer Mick Channon. The third foal and winner for her dam, Manhattan Jungle has a Sioux Nation 2-year-old half-sister, as well as a yearling half-brother by Shaman (Ire). The Sioux Nation filly, also consigned by Wraymount, made €90,000 on the bid of Emma Chilcot & Get in the Game at the Goffs Sportman's Sale last September.

An honourable mention, is the late Galileo (Ire)'s 3-year-old daughter Juniper's Moon, who graduated by three-parts of a length going 1 1/16 miles on grass in her third try at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday (video). The Coolmore great's 359 stakes winners (241 group/graded), feature 26 in Canada and North America, with 15 at the Grade I tier. Juniper's Moon is one of 61 North American winners from 171 runners.

Bred by Carolyn and Fletcher Gray and foaled in Kentucky, the chestnut was part of the Blandford Stud consignment at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and brought $725,000 from J.R. International Holdings. Second when unveiled over the Aqueduct turf in November for Team Spoor and Anthony Dutrow, she was sixth at that track stepping up to 1 1/8 miles on the main track on Nov. 25.

Related to the late GII Jim Dandy S. hero-turned sire Laoban (Uncle Mo), she is out of GI Cotillion S., GI Delaware H., and GI Spinster S. heroine I'm A Chatterbox (Munnings), who was also placed five times at the graded level and was third in the GI Kentucky Oaks of 2015. I'm A Chatterbox was covered by Into Mischief last spring.

Kingman's Florida Double

Florida was the place to be on Thursday, as Juddmonte stallion Kingman (GB) sired a brace of new maiden winners.

William K. Werner's 3-year-old filly Grace Darling (Ire) struck by two lengths in the day's fifth race going 7 1/2 furlongs at the Hallandale Beach oval (video) under Tyler Gaffalione, who would also be aboard Kingman's other winner on the day, Turf King. The GII Edgewood S. at Churchill in May is next for Kingman's 22nd American winner according to current trainer Brian Lynch.

Bred at trainer Dermot Weld's Springbank Way Stud, she made her first two starts at Naas in Weld's silks. Sixth versus males in her six-furlong July debut, the daughter of former Weld trainee and G3 Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial heroine Stormfly (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) improved to third going that same trip there behind Dower House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and subsequent listed heroine Spirit Gal (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who has Guineas aspirations for Charles Fipke. From the family of dual hemisphere Group 1 winner and sire Ivanhowe (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB), Grace Darling was acquired privately by her current connections, and is followed by the juvenile colt Wasp (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}).

In the day's finale, Ridgemont Stud-bred Turf King (Ire), out of another Acclamation (GB) mare in Sweet Acclaim (Ire), closed to take a one-mile all-weather feature by a neck for the Chad Brown barn at first asking (video). Offered by David Cox's Baroda Stud at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale in 2021, the colt was picked up for €100,000 by Niall Brennan, who sent him through the 2022 OBS March Sale. After breezing a furlong in :10.1, he made $180,000 on the bid of Wise Racing, and now carries their colours.

Placed third in the G3 Oh So Sharp S. in England, Sweet Acclaim also placed at the graded level Stateside, in the GIII Appalachian S., GIII Violet S., and the GIII Old Forester Mint Julep H., but did manage a stakes victory over the Ellis Park turf. From the extended family of three-time GI Breeders' Cup Mile heroine Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), she was picked up for $600,000 out of the 2016 Keeneland November Sale by Craig Roscoe. Turf King is her third foal, third to race and third winner. She has a juvenile filly by Lope De Vega (Ire) yet to come, and a yearling filly by Night Of Thunder (Ire).

The March-foaled Turf King gives Kingman a total of 23 winners from 45 runners Stateside (51%). Sprinkled liberally among them are seven stakes scorers (15% stakes winners to runners), led by three-time Grade I winner Domestic Spending (GB), who was also trained by Brown. Residing at Banstead Manor Stud in England, the 12-year-old has 54 worldwide black-type winners and stands for £125,000 this season.

Group Winner Stone Age To Race Under Lease For HH The Amir Trophy

Group winner Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has been leased to Jassim Mohamed J D Al-Darwish for his run in Saturday's His Highness The Amir Trophy in Qatar.

A winner of the G3 Derby Trial at Leopardstown at three for a Coolmore partnership and Aidan O'Brien, the 4-year-old has placed three times at the highest level, including the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud at two, and the GI Belmont Derby Invitational S. and GI Breeders' Cup Turf last year. He enters the 2400-metre event on the back of a fifth-place effort under Ryan Moore in the GI Longines Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin on Dec. 11. Moore will be the saddle again on Feb. 18, and the duo will leave from stall three.

O'Brien also runs Group 1 winner Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in The Amir Trophy for owners Derrick Smith, Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and M Matushima. GI Breeders' Cup Mile hero Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) will compete for a different Coolmore partnership in the local G2 Doha Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cup over a mile on the same card.

Galileo Mare Tops Goffs February Sale As Baroda Completes Clean Sweep

Baroda Stud finished as strong as it started at the Goffs February Sale by sending out the top three lots on Thursday, headed by Galileo (Ire) mare Red Azalea (Ire) (lot 482A), knocked down to Mick Donohoe of BBA Ireland for €340,000.

Red Azalea was a supplementary entry to the sale. A winner in her own right when trained by Donnacha O'Brien, she is a daughter of the classy Music Box (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who scored at Group 3 level.

Donohoe also signed for the unraced Frankel (GB) filly, Nomadland (GB) (468), while Barry Lynch secured black-type performer Romanosa (GB) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) (lot 410), as Baroda's mares played starring roles late in the day.

Lynch said, “Romanosa is a very nice filly and has a good back pedigree. I think she'll make a lovely mare and she'll come back to auction next year in foal to a high profile stallion, fingers crossed. She's been bought by a number of guys who want to buy a mare to reoffer at a public auction so fingers crossed it will all work out.”

Earlier in the afternoon, Boherguy Stud enjoyed a good result with a Blue Point (Ire) colt (lot 256) selling to Hamish McCauley for €60,000 while Jill Lamb went to €52,000 to secure a Too Darn Hot (GB) filly (lot 266)) from Clare Manning's draft.

Lamb, buying on behalf of Mike Watson's Trebles Holford Thoroughbreds, also snapped up a €56,000 Dandy Man filly (lot 328) from Church View Stables with Lamb labelling the visit as productive.

She said, “I absolutely loved the Dandy Man (Ire) but didn't think it would cost that much to buy her. She looks a real racey filly. We may keep her to race or we may reoffer her as a yearling. I loved the Too Darn Hot as well. She had a great pedigree and I am very keen on Too Darn Hot's yearlings. Hopefully she will come good. They are for Mike Watson who has Trebles Holford Thoroughbreds. It's been a productive afternoon and I'm really pleased with the two fillies I've bought.”

Goffs chief Henry Beeby was particularly pleased to see Lamb and her fellow raiders in action at the two-day sale where turnover dropped 28% to €4,348,550.

The caveat being that there were 66 less horses offered at the February sale this year compared to in 2022. Of the 424 offered, 273 were sold, which represented a 64% clearance rate. The average over the two days was €15,929, down 7% on last year, while the median stayed the same at €9,000.

Beeby commented, “Goffs February fulfils an important function in the sales calendar as it provides another opportunity for foal (weanling) sellers and buyers. Sometimes the youngster needed more time and on other occasions they did not make our superb November or December Foal Sales for some reason or failed to hit the target on that visit to the ring.

“When November and December are strong it sometimes leads to a weaker February as orders might be filled and/or the better lots already sold. Whether or not that is the case this week is debatable but the common theme over the last two days has been a vibrant trade for those that held most appeal, especially to the pinhooking fraternity, but an altogether different story for those deemed not to be as commercial. Suggesting otherwise would be foolhardy as it is very much the case in the times in which we live.”

He added, “We probably enjoyed a post pandemic bounce last year in terms of numbers with the expansion to three days for the first time since 2018 and so this year's two-day affair was always going to show a reduced turnover. However, it is interesting to note that the median price remained the same as 2022 which demonstrates a consistency to the market for a sale in which the size of the entry is largely reactive to the autumn sales.

“Trade for the breeding stock session mirrored the weanlings with keen competition for some and less interest in others but we have been pleased to welcome another strong overseas contingent to Kildare Paddocks who are enticed year after year by the enduring quality of Irish bloodlines and the endeavours of ITM working alongside the Goffs Buyer Recruitment Team and our excellent international agents.

“The market leading status of Goffs February has been confirmed once again with the highest February prices for Flat weanling, NH weanling and breeding stock with the latter recording the fourth best price for this sale and the best since 2014. As ever, we extend our thanks to each vendor and all our purchasers for we are nothing without them.”
