Sadler Seeks Repeat For Galilean In California Dreamin’, Starts Three in Daisycutter

Trainer John Sadler will send out defending champion Galilean in Sunday's featured $150,000 California Dreamin' Stakes and has a three-horse contingent in the $80,000 Daisycutter Handicap earlier in the program at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

At the very least, Sadler's charges figure to factor strongly in both events as the 64-year-old Pasadena native seeks to add to his 78 Del Mar stakes victories, second on the track's all-time list behind Bob Baffert.

Galilean, a 5-year-old son of Uncle Mo owned by West Point Thoroughbreds and partners, moved between rivals to get a clear lead entering the stretch and held on for a half-length victory as the 3-2 favorite in last year's California Dreamin', a 1 1/16-mile turf assignment for California breds. It was the fourth start in a seven-race 2020 campaign that has netted earnings of $217,098.

Sunday's title defense, however, is the 2021 debut for Galilean, ending an eight-month layoff since finishing fourth as the favorite in the Cary Grant Stakes in November during Del Mar's Bing Crosby fall meeting.

“It's a little different this year coming off a layoff, but he's a very good horse, doing well, and we're expecting good things,” Sadler said.

The field from the rail with riders and morning line odds: Desmond Doss (Abel Cedillo, 5-1); Wound Tight (Kent Desormeaux, 6-1); Unbridled Ethos (Ricky Gonzalez, 20-1); Secret Club (Tyler Baze, 30-1); Indian Peak (Flavien Prat, 8-1); Ward 'n Jerry (Trevor McCarthy, 8-1); Galilean (Joe Bravo, 4-1); Margot's Boy (Juan Hernandez, 12-1); Brandothebartender (Umberto Rispoli, 4-1) and North County Guy (Mario Gutierrez, 7-2).

In the Daisycutter, a five-furlong turf sprint for older California-bred fillies and mares, Sadler will saddle Constantia, Five Pics Please, and Bruja Escarlata for three different ownerships.

Constantia, bred and owned by Keith Abrahams, comes in off a win in the Mizdirection overnight and runner-up in the Grade 2 Monrovia, both at Santa Anita. Five Pics Please, owned by Desert Sun Stables, has a win, a second, and a third in three starts since joining the Sadler stable for her 2021 campaign.

Bruja Escarlata, which translates from Spanish as “Scarlet Witch,” is owned by Hronis Racing. The 4-year-old daughter of Street Boss, a $185,000 purchase at a Florida sale in 2019, debuted with a victory at Los Alamitos in December and followed with wins on the turf at Santa Anita in February and the dirt there in March.

“Two of the fillies (Five Pics Please and Bruja Escarlata) are pretty fast and the other is a deep closer,” Sadler pointed out. “I think they all fit pretty well in there.”

California-Bred Divisional Champions Announced; Horse Of The Year Revealed On March 15

The California-bred Horse of the Year for 2020 will be announced at the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association's Annual Meeting and Awards, which will be held via teleconference on Monday, March 15, 2021.

The time of the event, and call-in details, are still to be determined. The annual business meeting will be part of the conference call.

The three finalists for Horse of the Year, in alphabetical order, are: Bulletproof One, Mucho Unusual and Warren's Showtime.

Winners of the stallion divisions will be announced soon. Other Cal-bred champions that will be recognized during the teleconference:

Champion California-bred 2-Year-Old Male – Tie between Big Fish and Good With People. Big Fish, bred by George Krikorian, owned by Legacy Ranch, trained by David Hofmans; Good With People, bred and owned by J. Kirk and Judy Robison, trained by Peter Miller.

Champion California-bred 2-Year-Old Female – Governor Goteven, bred and owned by Templeton Horses LLC, trained by Walther Solis.

Champion California-bred 3-Year-Old Male – El Tigre Terrible, bred by Martin Bach, owned by Slam Dunk Racing and Michael Nentwig, trained by Peter Miller.

Champion California-bred 3-Year-Old Female – Warren's Showtime, bred by Benjamin Warren, owned by Benjamin and Sally Warren, trained by Craig Lewis.

Loud Mouth Charges Past Take The One O One For Cary Grant Victory

Thomsen Racing's Loud Mouth tracked the leaders early, then fired his best shot in the lane under leading rider Abel Cedillo and came away with a three-quarter length score in the seventh running of the Cary Grant Stakes Sunday at Del Mar near San Diego, Calif.

The 4-year-old colt by Boisterous rang up his first stakes score in the Cal-bred offering, besting six rivals in 1:22.34 for the seven panels.

It was the second win on the day for Cedillo, who now has 18 firsts in 11 days of racing. Loud Mouth is trained by Steve Knapp.

Finishing second was Jay Em Ess Stable's Take the One O One, while Reddam Racing's Rookie Mistake was three and a half lengths farther back. The 11-10 favorite, West Point Thoroughbreds, Barker, Sandbrook, et al's Galilean finished fourth.

“I could tell they were going fast up front (:22.13, :44.94, 1:09.56), but I had my eye on the favorite (Galilean),” said Cedillo. “I was tracking him. When he made his move (on the turn), I moved with him. Then I went by him in the straight and went after the leader (Take the One O One). My horse had it and we got him.”

Loud Mouth paid $28.00, $10.60 and $7.00 for his tally. Take the One O One returned $4.80 and $3.60, while Rookie Mistake paid $6.80.

The victory gave Cedillo another notch on his belt toward winning his second straight Bing Crosby Season title at Del Mar. He is currently eight wins ahead of his nearest rival with four days left in the meet. Last year the 31-year-old from Guatemala won honors with 13 victories.

“I kept experimenting with him to find out what and how far he wanted to run,” Knapp said of Loud Mouth. “He got some real questionable rides, several of them, but I knew this horse could run. We went the seven today and worked out and he ran huge. This horse has a big heart and when he gets to the lead or gets close, he runs. And he's got a really nice way of moving. He's a runner and this is a hell of a win.”

The winning owner, Ron Thomsen, lives in Valley Center, which is about 32 miles northeast of Del Mar.

Racing will resume at Del Mar on Thanksgiving Thursday with an early first post at 11 a.m. It will be the start of a dynamic final four days of the season with seven graded turf stakes up for grabs, including Grade 1 offerings on Saturday (Hollywood Derby) and Sunday (Matriarch Stakes).

Galilean Looking To Add Cary Grant Stakes To Growing Résumé

West Point Thoroughbreds, Denis Barker and William Sandbrook's Galilean will attempt to win the seventh stakes race of his brief career Sunday when he takes on nine rivals in the seventh running of the Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar near San Diego, Calif.

The seven-furlong dash for 3-year-olds and up bred in California carries a purse of $100,000 and is part of the year-long Golden State Series that provides approximately $4.6 million in purses to Cal breds at racetracks throughout the state.

Galilean is a son of the prolific Kentucky sire Uncle Mo out of the El Prado mare Fresia who was foaled in the Golden State. He was a $60,000 yearling purchase initially, but he became much more than that when he was offered for sale at the Barretts Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in 2018. He was far and away the sales topper at that event as he was hammered home at $600,000 at the behest of West Point Thoroughbred's Terry Finley.

The bay colt was trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer for his 2- and 3-year-old seasons and captured the Barretts Juvenile Stakes at Los Alamitos in the first start of his career. He went on to win two more stakes and place in two others for Hollendorfer before going on the shelf, then being moved to the barn of conditioner John Sadler for his 4-year-old season where he's managed to win a trio of Cal-bred stakes. His current record stands at 12 starts, six wins and $577,098 in purses.

Galilean will be ridden by Umberto Rispoli Sunday under top weight of 124 pounds and has been pegged as the 5/2 favorite in the Cary Grant lineup.

El Tigre Terrible, a 3-year-old by Smiling Tiger, has won four of nine starts including a pair of stakes tallies, most recently at Del Mar this past summer in the Real Good Deal run under similar conditions as the Cary Grant. Peter Miller trains the bay gelding.

Take the One O One shortens up after a series of two-turn races. The 5-year-old by Acclamation didn't race at all in 2019, but is a double winner this year. The Brian Koriner-trained horse has a bankroll that reads $447,326.

Rookie Mistake has been stakes-placed on four different occasions. The Square Eddie colt is trained by Doug O'Neill.

Both Brickyard Ride and Surfing Star are being ridden by apprentices, an unusual occurrence in a stakes race where their apprentice allowances do not apply. In both cases it has to be seen as a tip of the cap to Centeno and Pyfer and their riding abilities.

First post Sunday for the nine-race card is 12:30. The Cary Grant is the eight race on the program and should go off around 4 p.m.
