Red-Hot Jonathan Thomas Sets Sights On Wood Memorial With Nicky The Vest

Nicky the Vest, trained by Jonathan Thomas for owner Robert LaPenta, matched a career-best 83 Beyer last out in a dominant 11 3/4-length score in the $100,000 Gander, a one-turn mile for New York-bred sophomores on Valentine's Day at Aqueduct in Ozone Park, N.Y.

In victory, Nicky the Vest, bred in the Empire State by Highclere, became the first stakes winner for his sire Runhappy. Purchased for $110,000 at the 2019 OBS Yearling Sale, Nicky the Vest is perfect through two starts which includes a 3 1/4-length score on debut in December going the one-turn mile at Aqueduct.

Nicky the Vest covered a half-mile in 49.95 seconds on the Belmont dirt training track on February 26 and Thomas said the bay colt will return to the work tab on Monday as preparations continue for the Grade 2 Wood Memorial presented by Resorts World Casino on April 3.

“He's doing well. He'll breeze tomorrow and so far we're on target for the Wood,” said Thomas. “He came out of the Gander well and his energy level was good. The weather has been a little contentious the past couple weeks, so we didn't want to take having a nice track for granted and we went ahead and got him back a week earlier than we'd anticipated.”

Thomas said he will look to provide the lightly-raced Nicky the Vest with valuable experience in upcoming works.

“I might try next week to give him two horses as a target and give him the opportunity to take a little kickback,” said Thomas. “You never know if he might need to overcome a trip with that kind of scenario. But we'll also focus on some longer works so he doesn't come in too fresh and settles well.

“It's exciting. He's undefeated and he's done it by open lengths thus far,” added Thomas. “Every task from here on out is only going to get incrementally harder, but we like him a lot and we're going to give him every chance to succeed.”

Thomas, a multiple Grade 1-winning conditioner, is off to a flying start in 2021 with a record of 22-10-3-3 and purse earnings of $285,445. He credits that success to patient owners and being able to focus solely on training at Belmont.

“Our owners have been patient and have let these horses develop into their 3-year-old years,” said Thomas. “A lot of these horses have longer winded pedigree and that's something we don't have control over. You may want to debut them in August, but it's not the right thing to do and probably wouldn't run their best anyway. The barn is cycling in the right way and we've had a really good couple of months.”

Thomas sent out a pair of promising maiden winners for Augustin Stable at Turfway Park earlier in the week in Be Here and Siraneuse.

Be Here, a Kentucky homebred by Ghostzapper out of 2009 Champion Female Sprinter Informed Decision, earned a 62 Beyer for her 1 1/2-length score in a one-mile maiden special weight on March 4. The sophomore grey colt, who was prepared at Belmont, earned a 62 Beyer.

Thomas said the colt will likely be nominated to the Wood Memorial.

“The Wood offers some opportunity,” said Thomas. “He seems to be very stamina laden and going to a mile and an eighth off of that, I wouldn't be as worried. Obviously, you'd like a little more seasoning but it isn't out of the question.”

Siraneuse, a sophomore filly by Tapit, was purchased for $450,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. Bred in Kentucky by Vegso Racing Stable and Tapit Syndicate, Siraneuse earned a 78 Beyer for a rallying five-length score in a one-mile maiden special weight on March 3.

Thomas said Turfway's Tapeta surface offered both young horses an alternative debut experience.

“Be Here doesn't act like a sprinter,” said Thomas. “The more ground he gets the better he will be. Also, after training here at Belmont, the verdict was out on whether or not he's a dirt horse. Obviously, we have no turf racing here on the immediate horizon, so I wanted to get him started.

“The same can be said of the filly, Siraneuse. Both horses were coming out of good works and those races were available,” continued Thomas. “I'm not certain they're dirt horses yet and I wanted to be careful and not debut them on the dirt and have a bad experience. There's a chance both will end up on the grass in New York.”

Last week's scores built on earlier Turfway success for Thomas with Augustin Stable sophomore filly homebreds Into Vanishing and Song of Innocence.

By Into Mischief and out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Vanishing, Into Vanishing graduated at third asking in December at Turfway and followed with a six-length optional-claiming win on January 15 at the Florence, Kentucky oval garnering a 70 Beyer in the one-mile trip.

Song of Innocence, by Munnings and out of the Pulpit mare Remember Then, rallied from seventh for a one-length score in a one-mile maiden special weight on January 29.

Thomas said Siraneuse, Into Vanishing and Song of Innocence will be nominated to the Grade 3, $250,000 Gazelle at nine furlongs on April 3 at the Big A offering 100-40-20-10 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points to the top-four finishers. The veteran conditioner also noted at least one is likely to enter the one-mile Bourbonette Oaks on March 14 at Turfway.

Thomas said Bridlewood Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Robert V. LaPenta's Gale has been retired following a 2 3/4-length score in the Geisha, a one-mile event for Maryland-bred or sired fillies and mares on January 16 at Laurel Park.

The 4-year-old Tonalist filly, who finished fifth in the Grade 3 Comely at the Big A in November, matched a career-best 86 Beyer for her first stakes score.

“She got really unlucky in the Comely,” said Thomas. “She went into that race as good as we've ever had her but it was an unfortunate trip and break. The whole thing was done before it got started.

“It was nice to get her a stakes win,” added Thomas. “She's a really pretty filly and from a talent perspective it was nice for her to go out a stakes winner. She has been retired and will be a broodmare. She's down in Kentucky at Gainesway.”

Miss Marissa Seeks Fourth Straight

Cammarota Racing’s Miss Marissa (He’s Had Enough) goes for her fourth-straight victory and third over nine panels in Aqueduct’s GIII Comely S. Friday. The James Ryerson pupil kicked off her streak with a Monmouth allowance victory July 11, and cleared her next condition at Saratoga Aug. 13 at odds of 20-1. She added to her career ROI last out with a 10-1 upset in the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. Oct. 3.

“We’re very pleased with how she’s training,” Ryerson said. “We gave her a little blowout before this and she’s done well since the Black-Eyed Susan and we’re looking forward to it… Early on, we thought she’d stretch out. She really likes the two-turn pace scenario. I think it’s just getting that stretch out and the two turns, her efforts have been much better.”

Project Whiskey (Tapizar), a 38-1 upset winner of the GIII Delaware Oaks July 4, was sixth in the Black-Eyeed Susan.

Gale (Tonalist), a $450,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic purchase, looks to add to her own streak. The Maryland-bred aired by 6 1/2 lengths on the Laurel lawn Oct. 22, then ran up the score to 13 1/2 lengths in a rained-off one-mile allowance back there Nov. 5. Both of those wins came when employing aggressive front-end tactics that she figures to use again under first-time pilot Jose Ortiz.

New York-breds Makingcents (Goldencents) and Ice Princess (Palace Malice) have both shown an affinity for this distance, having finished one-two in the restricted Fleet Indian S. at Saratoga Sept. 4. Both also own wins at Aqueduct.

Thankful (American Pharoah), a $625,000 FTSAUG yearling, defeated Mrs. Danvers (Tapit) in a Sept. 27 N1X allowance over a one-turn mile. The latter came back to clear that condition Oct. 25, and is the somewhat surprising 5-2 favorite on the morning line.

Improving Miss Marissa Faces Stakes Newcomers Thankful, Gale In Friday’s Comely At Aqueduct

Miss Marissa will carry a three-race winning streak – including her first stakes score last out in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan – into the expected last start of her sophomore campaign when she headlines the Grade 3, $100,000 Comely for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/8 miles Friday at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

The 71st running of the Comely is one of three stakes on a special Friday-after-Thanksgiving card, joining the $100,000 Gio Ponti for 3-year-olds on the turf and the $100,000 Forever Together for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up also competing on the grass.

Miss Marissa, owned by Alfonso Cammarota, won just once in her first nine starts, culminating when trainer James Ryerson moved the He's Had Enough filly to back to turf, where she ran fifth on June 14 at Belmont.

After the off-the-board effort, Miss Marissa showed improved form returning to the main track. Ryerson credited the stretch out in distances, which paid immediate dividends when she notched a three-length victory going a mile and 70 yards on July 11 at Monmouth and a 2 1/2-length score against optional claimers going 1 1/8 miles on August 13 at Saratoga Race Course.

Off a 91 Beyer Speed Figure for her Saratoga race, Miss Marissa faced deeper waters in her first graded stakes appearance of the year in the prestigious Black-Eyed Susan. Competing at the Comely distance, she tracked in second position through three-quarters of a mile before taking command before the stretch and edging Bonny South by a neck to win the historic race at Pimlico Race Course on Preakness Day. Her win landed her a career-best 92 Beyer.

“We're very pleased with how she's training,” Ryerson said. “We gave her a little blowout before this and she's done well since the Black-Eyed Susan and we're looking forward to it.

“Early on, we thought she'd stretch out,” he continued. “She really likes the two-turn pace scenario. I think it's just getting that stretch out and the two turns, her efforts have been much better.”

Miss Marissa has made two previous stakes starts at the Big A, finishing 10th in the Grade 2 Demoiselle last December to close her juvenile year. She earned black type with a third-place finish in the seven-furlong Ruthless in January in her 3-year-old bow.

“The added distance will help; she handled Aqueduct that day, so hopefully that won't be a problem,” Ryerson said. “I think the mile and an eighth and two turns is where we found a home of late, so it's a good fit.”

Dylan Davis will ride from the inside post.

Trainer Todd Pletcher will send out Bass Stables' Thankful for her stakes debut after back-to-back wins at Saratoga and Belmont, respectively. The daughter of 2015 Triple Crown-winner American Pharoah broke her maiden at third asking in August 20 at the Spa before earning an 89 Beyer for topping allowance company going a one-turn mile on September 27 over Belmont's Big Sandy.

Thankful, a $625,000 purchase at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton New York Select Sale, drew post 5 with Kendrick Carmouche aboard for her Aqueduct debut.

Gale will also be making her stakes debut off consecutive wins. The Tonalist filly made her first two starts on turf, running third in her debut on July 30 at Laurel before an impressive 6 ½-length victory over the same surface on October 22. Rain moved her last start off the Laurel turf to the main track, and she responded to the dirt with a 13 ½-length win against a seven-horse field that garnered an 86 Beyer.

Trainer Jonathan Thomas said that effort warranted another opportunity on the main track.

“Visually, her last race was impressive and it came back a strong number,” Thomas said. “Any time you're beating horses off the turf in a state-bred allowance race, it's tough to know what to make of it. She acts like a quality filly, but this will be a big step up.”

Owned by Bridlewood Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Robert LaPenta, Gale was a $450,000 purchase at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Florida Select Sale. She will have the services of jockey Jose Ortiz from post 8 on Friday.

“She seems very honest,” Thomas said. “We feel like she's probably better on the dirt from what we've seen from her, but she seems to be very genuine no matter what we put under her feet.”

Allen Stables' Mrs. Danvers finished fifth in her only previous stakes appearance in the Grade 1 Test on August 8 at Saratoga. After a runner-up effort and a victory against allowance company going one mile in each of her last two races, she will stretch out to 1 1/8 miles for the first time for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey.

“She's kind of a frustrating filly so far. She's got more ability than she's given me,” McGaughey said. “We'll run her a mile and an eighth and if she breaks good she'll be laying right there and see what happens from there. Blacktype would be really nice for her.”

The daughter of Tapit is 2-3-1 in seven career starts. Jose Lezcano will have the call from post 6.

Rounding out the field is Project Whiskey, sixth in the Black-Eyed Susan who ran second in the Monmouth Oaks in August, for trainer Butch Reid [post 10, Christopher DeCarlo]; Makingcents, winner of the Fleet Indian against New York-breds in September at Belmont, for conditioner Jeremiah Englehart [post 7, Jorge Vargas Jr.]; Ice Princess, the runner-up in the Fleet Indian and winner of the Maddie May in February at Aqueduct, for trainer Danny Gargan [post 3, Junior Alvarado]; Pure Rhythm, for trainer Michael Stidham [post 9, Nik Juarez]; and a pair of entrants making their respective stakes debuts in Toned Up [post 2, Romero Maragh] and My Sweet Wife [post 4, Eric Cancel].

The Comely is slated as Race 8 on Aqueduct's 10-race program, which offers a first post of 11:50 a.m. Eastern. America's Day at the Races will present daily television coverage of the Aqueduct fall meet with coverage to air on FOX Sports and MSG Networks.
