Sharing Looks to End Year on High in American Oaks

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gainesway’s well-traveled Sharing (Speightstown) will look for her second Grade I win over the Santa Anita turf when she heads postward in the GI American Oaks Saturday for trainer Graham Motion. The chestnut filly, who won last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in Arcadia, opened 2020 with a win in the May 23 Tepin S. at Churchill Downs. She shipped overseas to be a gallant second in the June 20 G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot and returned stateside to take the Sept. 4 GII Edgewood S. in Louisville. She shipped west from Motion’s Fair Hill base to be a close-up fourth in the Nov. 29 GI Matriarch S. last time out and makes the return trip for this 1 1/4-mile contest.

Always dangerous with distaff turfers–and on holiday weekends in Southern California–trainer Chad Brown sends out a pair of Klaravich Stables runners in the Oaks. The lightly raced Capital Structure (GB), trying stakes company for the first time Saturday, was a debut winner over the Monmouth turf in July and added a 1 1/16-mile allowance tally at Belmont Park two starts later in her most recent trip to the post Oct. 25. Stablemate Duopoly (Animal Kingdom), also a maiden winner over the Monmouth turf in July, won a Saratoga allowance Aug. 21 before finishing fifth in the Oct. 16 GIII Valley View S. She returned to the winner’s circle with a front-running 3/4-length tally in the Nov. 15 Winter Memories S. at Aqueduct last time out.

Representing the West Coast home team, Going to Vegas (Goldencents) will be looking to break through at the top level after a pair of runner-up efforts in graded company. Claimed for $50,000 in June, the Richard Baltas trainee missed by just a neck when second in the one-mile GIII Autumn Miss S. at Santa Anita Oct. 17 and was caught late when runner-up in the 1 3/8-miles GIII Red Carpet H. at Del Mar last time out Nov. 26.

National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame’s Foal Patrol Season 4 To Debut Dec. 29

Season 4 of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's popular live webcam series Foal Patrol will debut online at www.foalpatrol.com on Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Season 4 will feature in-foal mares at Mill Ridge Farm, Safari North at Pauls Mill Farm, and Three Chimneys Farm — all based in Kentucky — and Old Tavern Farm in New York. Season 4 will also feature champion sire Tapit at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky.

Foal Patrol is a one-of-a-kind collection of live cameras following the daily activities of in-foal mares produced by the National Museum of Racing. Millions of people throughout the world have viewed the popular webcam program since its initial launch in late 2017.

Here is a closer look at the Foal Patrol Season 4 participants:

Janae (mare, Safari North at Pauls Mill Farm, Versailles, Ky.)

In foal to Malibu Moon, Janae is a 5-year-old bay daughter of Closing Argument out of the Petionville mare Debs Pet. Bred in Louisiana by Jim and Sue Harris, Janae won two of seven career races and was in the money two other occasions. Both of her wins, including the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity, took place at Lone Star Park.

Owned by Susan Moulton, Janae produced a filly by Mizzen Mast in 2019 and a filly by Daredevil in 2020. Janae's foal by Malibu Moon has an expected due date of April 12, 2021.

Miss Always Ready (mare, Three Chimneys Farm, Versailles, Ky.)

In foal to Palace Malice, Miss Always Ready is an 8-year-old dark bay daughter of More Than Ready out of the Dehere mare Miss Seffens. Bred in Kentucky by Santucket Stables, she was purchased by Three Chimneys at the Keeneland April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale in 2014. During her racing career, Miss Always Ready won once from five starts, earning her lone victory in October 2014 at Belmont Park.

Miss Always Ready is expected to deliver her foal in late March/early April 2021. The foal will be a full sibling to Structor, winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Structor was Miss Always Ready's first foal. She has since given birth to fillies by Palace Malice (2019) and Gun Runner (2020).

Miss Chapin (mare, Mill Ridge Farm, Lexington, Ky.)

In foal to Oscar Performance, Miss Chapin is a 19-year-old bay daughter of Royal Academy out of the Akarad (FR) mare Society Dream (FR). Bred in Kentucky by Jerome and John Ammerman, Miss Chapin won her lone career start at Del Mar in 2004.

Miss Chapin is the dam of Grade 1 winner Coffee Clique and Grade 2 winner Admission Office, who is still active on the track. Miss Chapin's foal by Oscar Performance has an expected due date of March 18, 2021.

To the Moon Alice (mare, Old Tavern Farm, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.)

In foal to Uncle Mo, To the Moon Alice is a 7-year-old dark bay daughter of Malibu Moon out of the Partner's Hero mare Love Match. Bred in Kentucky by Hare Forest Farm, she was purchased by Old Tavern Farm at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale in 2017. To the Moon Alice made only two starts in her brief racing career in 2016. She finished third in her career debut at Gulfstream Park and was sixth in her only other race, which took place at Belmont.

To the Moon Alice has had three foals — all of which are owned by Old Tavern Farm — colts by Maclean's Music, Will Take Charge, and Ghostzapper. To the Moon Alice's fourth foal has an expected due date of April 20, 2021.

Tapit (featured stallion, Gainesway Farm, Lexington, Ky.)

One of the most influential and breed-shaping stallions of the past half-century, Tapit has sired 27 grade 1 winners, 31 yearlings to bring $1 million or more at auction, and earners of more than $162 million on the racetrack. He stands at historic Gainesway for a 2021 fee of $185,000.

To date, Tapit has sired 23 percent black-type horses, 138 overall stakes winners (86 graded), eight Eclipse Award winners, and six Breeders' Cup winners. His 2020 standouts include undefeated Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Essential Quality. Tapit has been North America's leading sire three times.

Who’s Your Pick? Andrew Cary

As we approach the end of the calendar, we turn our attention to the incoming sire class of 2021. We asked several judges who their favorite incoming sire is for next year and if there are any other stallions, new or otherwise, that have caught their eye as under-the-radar picks.

ANDREW CARY, Cary Bloodstock

McKinzie (Street Sense), $30,000, Gainesway

This is a very strong group of incoming freshman sires and it’s very hard to just pick one, but I am a huge fan of McKinzie. I think had he retired in a “normal” year, he would have stood for more.

When he was at the top of his game in the summer of 2019, he was the best horse in the country. He was incredibly unlucky not to win the GI Met Mile (where he only got to run for about a sixteenth of a mile) and he galloped to a very easy win in the GI Whitney S. against a strong field and in fast time.

Any horse who can compete at the highest level from ages two through five and run first or second in 14 graded stakes has to be immensely respected.

In addition, he’s got the strong physical and pedigree that the market requires. Street Sense is a tremendous sire who still has plenty of years of production left, and his dam Runway Model (Petionville) was an elite runner herself. Bob Baffert was always very high on this horse from the moment he entered his shedrow. I think Gainesway did a great job pricing him where they did and my clients are breeding five mares to him.

Instagrand (Into Mischief), $7,500, Taylor Made

I think Instagrand is the potential home run horse of this whole crop, especially at his stud fee. He is a tremendous physical by the hottest sire on the planet, was a $1.2 million 2-year-old and flashed top level ability from the get go. He did train on as a 3-year-old to place in the GI Santa Anita Derby against the previous year’s champion 2-year-old Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Roadster (Quality Road).

Unfortunately he never got to truly fulfill all of his potential on the racetrack, but his profile matches up with many top stallions who began their careers standing for under $15,000 (including his own sire Into Mischief, as well as Distorted Humor, Mr. Prospector, Danzig, War Front, etc).

I encourage people to go back and watch Instagrand’s first two races–his maiden win and the GII Best Pal S., both of which he won by over 10 lengths. They are jaw-dropping. Mr. Larry Best (leading buyer at Keeneland November Sale) has made a huge commitment to the horse and my clients will be supporting him strongly as well.

Champion Sire Tapit To Be Featured In Season 4 Of National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame’s Foal Patrol

Gainesway Farm's three-time North American champion sire Tapit will be the featured stallion for the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's Foal Patrol Season 4, which will debut online at www.foalpatrol.com on Dec. 29.

One of the most influential and breed-shaping stallions of the past half-century, Tapit has sired 27 Grade 1 winners, 31 yearlings to bring $1 million or more at auction, and earners of more than $162 million on the racetrack. He stands at historic Gainesway in Lexington, Ky., for a 2021 fee of $185,000.

“It's a thrill for us to have such an accomplished and popular stallion such as Tapit as part of the Foal Patrol program,” said John Hendrickson, president of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. “We thank everyone at Gainesway for sharing him with the fans of Foal Patrol and we're excited to get a glimpse into his daily life at such a wonderful farm.”
