Romantic Style Downs Ramatuelle in Deauville’s Prix Imprudence

Godolphin's Romantic Style (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) made her seasonal return a successful one and downed 'TDN Rising Star' Ramatuelle (Justify) to become her connections' first winner, in a thrilling renewal, of Deauville's G3 Prix Imprudence.

The 37-10 third favourite, who shed maiden status at Great Yarmouth in September before winning the Listed Bosra Sham S., was positioned second in the far-side group and raced in an overall fifth through halfway in this seven-furlong distaffers' Guineas trial. Looming large out wide with 300 metres remaining, she quickened to the fore entering the final furlong and kept on strongly under stern urging to withstand the late rally of Ramatuelle by a half-length for a career high. Last term's G3 Prix Miesque victrix and long-time leader Tamfana (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) provided solidity to the form and finished another half-length adrift in third.

“We had a nice race, but she was a bit fresh early,” reflected William Buick. “She's quite speedy, she has a good turn of foot and used it at the finish. It was a good performance and she'll have to go up to a mile now. She's a good filly and, hopefully, she'll keep progressing.”

Charlie Appleby is very much leaning in the direction of Paris and ruled out any temptation to remain at home for Romantic Style's next start. “I don't think she'd see out the mile [of the 1,000 Guineas] at Newmarket, so we thought we'd be better off coming here as it gives her more time between now and the [G1 Poule d'Essai des] Pouliches. She's got natural pace in her pedigree, but she gives herself a chance to stay the mile and that will be the aim. What I loved about today is she did everything the right way around. She travelled and she travelled sensibly in behind horses. When she picked up I felt she was always doing enough to stay in front.”

Christopher Head was far from downcast after the defeat of G1 Prix Morny second Ramatuelle and confirmed next month's G1 1,000 Guineas remains the number one target. “You always have worries when you are not sure if they have trained on from two to three and that was a very positive return. On such [deep] ground you can easily sink after doing too much too early, but she kept finding again at the end. That was most encouraging and, if all is well, we shall stick to the plan and go to Newmarket for the  1,000 [Guineas].”

Tamfana's trainer David Menuisier has yet to commit to a specific target, but it will be a Classic route for the third-place finisher. “That was a very good reintroduction for her. It is not easy to make all like that from the centre of the track. We have now to decide if we go to Newmarket for the Guineas or Longchamp for the French equivalent.”

Galiway’s Showay Books Pouliches Ticket With Imprudence Upset

With 10 prior efforts recorded on the palmares, Le Haras de la Gousserie's sophomore distaffer Showay (Fr) (Galiway {GB}–Show Gorb {Spa}, by Caradak {Ire}) was, by some margin, the most experienced contender for Thursday's G3 Prix Imprudence at Deauville and her ringcraft told in the dying embers of a thrilling renewal. She stepped up from claiming company to twice hit the board at stakes level last term and was let go at a whopping 42-1 for this seven-furlong feature coming back off a third in Cagnes-sur-Mer's Feb. 12 Listed Prix de la Californie. The eventual winner was swiftly into stride and tracked the tempo in a handy third through the halfway mark. Last off the bridle inside the two pole, she inched ahead with 150 metres remaining and was driven out to hold the late bid of Ritournelle (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) by a head for a career high.

“We loved this filly from day one, when she ran in a claimer at Saint-Cloud, and we bought her privately at the end of last season,” explained Pauline Cheboub. “She ran well in Cagnes this winter, but had not come around yet. The two races there helped her be spot on for this race, which was our first major target, and it's mission accomplished.” Looking to Classic targets ahead, Chehboub added, “She is entered in the [May 14 G1] Poule d'Essai des Pouliches [at ParisLongchamp] and, most definitely, she is an intended runner.”

Classic Clues At Deauville

Against the backdrop of the news that Maisons-Laffitte could be on the way back, it is up to Deauville to continue to stage the two key seven-furlong trials that used to be the preserve of that Parisian venue and help light the way to the upcoming mile Classics on Thursday. In the G3 Prix Djebel, the colts who could be either 2000 Guineas or Poule d'Essai des Poulains-bound include the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere hero Belbek (Fr) (Showcasing {GB}) with Andre Fabre set to weigh up the correct target. Also successful over six furlongs in Chantilly's G3 Prix du Bois in June, Nurlan Bizakov's homebred would be one of the faster types taking part in either Classic but he does have Sangarius (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in his pedigree.

Has He Reached His Limit?

Third and beaten two necks in the Lagardere, TDN Rising Star Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) is back for another tilt at Belbek and add to his prior black-type win in the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure over this trip on the round course here in July. Whether he can build on a solid juvenile campaign and progress at three or whether he has already hit his ceiling is the question and both he and White Birch Farm's G3 Prix des Chenes-winning homebred Kubrick (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) have to put unplaced efforts behind them in Saint-Cloud's G1 Criterium International.

An Imprudence To Savour…

Seventy minutes after the Djebel, the likely 1000 Guineas and Poule d'Essai des Pouliches protagonists get their opportunity to shine in a numerically stronger prep which is probably also deeper in terms of competition and quality. Despite there being a total of seven listed or group winners in the line-up headed by Mohamed Saeed Al Shahi's Wed (Fr) (Profitable {Ire}), who captured the G2 Prix du Calvados over this course and distance in August, the presence of Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Beginnings (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) and Godolphin's Polytrack course winner Quickstep (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) make it a fascinating affair. Also in the mix is Jean-Pierre-Joseph Dubois's impressive Chantilly conditions scorer Sauterne (Fr) (Kingman {GB}), whose dam is a half to Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {Ger})

Mehmas’s Malavath To The Fore in the Imprudence

Everest Racing, Mme Barbara M Keller and David Redvers' G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte victrix Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who ran second in Del Mar's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf when last seen, stepped forward to dent a host of lofty reputations with victory in a stellar renewal of Thursday's G3 Prix Imprudence at Deauville. Tracking the leaders along the stands' side rail in fourth until angling outside for a clear run approaching the quarter-mile marker, the 37-10 second choice gained a narrow advantage entering the final furlong and was pushed out in the dying embers to prevail by 1 1/2 lengths from last term's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}).

Malavath is the first of three foals produced by Fidaaha (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), herself a full-sister to the GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial S. victrix Ceisteach (Ire). Fidaaha is also half to MSW G1 Prix Rothschild and G1 Prix Jean Romanet placegetter Steip Amach (Ire) (Vocalised). The March-foaled chestnut's third dam Sharafanya (Ire) (Zafonic) is kin to G2 Goldene Peitsche victor Giant Sandman (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) and Listed Harvest S. placegetter Shalamantika (Ire) (Nashwan), herself the dam of G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine Shalanaya (Ire) (Lomitas {GB}) and G2 Prix Chaudenay winner Shankardeh (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}). Malavath's G3 Prix Minerve-winning fourth dam Sharamana (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) is a half-sister to G1 Epsom Derby, G1 Irish Derby and G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond S. hero Shergar (GB) (Great Nephew {GB}). Fidaaha has a 2-year-old full-brother to Malavath and a yearling filly by Cotai Glory (GB) to come.
